In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about
Sri Lanka.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. The spice cinnamon originated in Sri Lanka. In classical times, four types of cinnamon were distinguished, but the most popular form, “true cinnamon” is from Sri Lanka and has been imported to
Ancient Egypt and
Greece. Sri Lanka still produces 80–90% of the world's supply of
Cinnamomum verum.
2. The capital of Sri Lanka is not
Colombo, but rather
Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte (usually simply called “
Kotte”). Kotte is not far from Colombo, but it is a distinctive city in its own right. The issue is complicated, as many governmental ministries remain in Colombo. Since
1982, however, Sri Lanka’s parliament has been situated in the middle of a small lake in the bucolic suburb of Kotte. Officially, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte is indeed the capital city.
3. Sri Lanka has an elephant orphanage -
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and every year, it serves as the venue of an elephant pageant. Pinnawalla is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In
2011, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in
Pinnawala.
4. One of Sri Lanka’s foremost pilgrimage sites, this soaring summit bears the revered impression of what is said to be the
Buddha’s own footprint, and offers the island’s most magical and enigmatic views.
5. Sri Lanka is a paradise for fans of
UNESCO World Heritage sites: there are eight sites scattered across the country! Sri Lanka’s
UNESCO sites include: the
Temple Of The
Tooth in
Kandy, the sacred ancient city of
Anuradhapura, the ancient city of
Polonnaruwa, the fortified city of
Galle,
Dambulla Cave Temple, the ancient rock city of
Sigiriya, the
Central Highlands and Sinhajara
Forest.
6. Sri Lanka was known as
Ceylon until
1972. Ceylon was the name the
British gave the country when it was a
British colony, and Sri Lanka wanted to shed the last remainders of the colonial times.
The country is divided into two major ethnic groups:
Sinhalese Buddhists (74 per cent) and
Tamil Hindu (18 per cent). Sinhalese have a longstanding history in Sri Lanka, whereas Tamil workers were only brought to Sri Lanka under the British in the
19th century. Tensions between the two led to civil war from
1983 all the way to 2009!
7.
Beaches, mountains, the tea country, wide open green plains, tropical jungles, Sri Lanka has it all! For such a small island, Sri Lanka is incredibly diverse.
