Complete large format tile Shower install Part 1 through 7 furring out studs installing backer board. In this video I show how I go about furring out a few studs that are not in plain and installing the backer board. When mudding the corners and seams of the backer board it important to use the correct materials, the mesh tape should be alkali resistant, a standard drywall tape will deteriorate over time because of the composition of the thinset used to install the tile. Corrosion resistant screws or roofing nails should be used for the same reason, do not use drywall screws. A fastener should be placed no less than every 8 inches. The weight of the tile and thinset on the walls will be considerable. Waterproofing is not an option, and should never be omitted in a wet area. Even though cement board like Durock is water safe, it is not waterproof. All corners are reinforced with a fiberglass fabric and two coats of waterproofing is applied to all surfaces that will be in the wet are of the shower. The mud of the shower floor is installed with a level perimeter and slopped to the drain with a pitch of a ¼” per foot. Laying out the tile is one of the most important parts of the tile installation, in this video i give a little insight on how i figured where to start my tile and how i did the layout. Also show how to install a ledger board for the tile. Often in a shower it will be necessary to install a recessed niche or Recessed shelf. This can be framed in before the backer board is installed, but most times I prefer to cut it in after I know what my tile layout will be. In this case niche did not line up with any grout lines, but it becomes easy to have the niche line up with the grout lines when it is done this way. First I determine where the niche will be located, then I cut out the backer board, add a few pieces of framing studs and then install the cement backer board and finally thoroughly waterproof everything. The wall tile in this bathroom was a 10 inch by 22 inch ceramic tile, which is considered a large format tile. I often use a leveling system to avoid lippage, and in this case I used the MLT tile Leveling system. With a large format tile it is important to use the correct type of thinset to help with the installation. In this bathroom I used a Medium bed mortar which is designed for the installation of this type tiles. I also used some Schluter Ditra to build out some depth for the installation of a 3D glass mosaic tile border. The glass border also was installed under the large wall mirrors and the ceramic tile was installed above. Also in this video the installation of the tile in a recessed niche with a marble shelf is shown. The mosaic tile floor, a dark marble hexagon tile bordered mother of pearl, was used on the shower floor. This video goes through the layout and installation of this shower floor. First a few sheets of the mosaic tile were dry laid to determine the best layout for the tile. The tile floor was then completely cut in without any thinset and then removed a section at a time to cement in place with a polymer modified thinset. First the thinset was “Keyed” in with the flat side of the trowel and then gauged with the notched side. The tiles were then put in place and imbedded with a rubber float.Ditra Heat is a floor warming system made by Schluter, it is a three component system consisting of the Ditra Mat, the cable system and the thermostat, it comes in both 120, and 240 volt. The Ditra mat for the Ditra heat is configured in such a way that the heat wire can be easily inserted and routed through the mat to heat the desired areas, in this case the whole floor was heated, but can also be used to heat different zones. The Ditra mat is installed the same way as the regular Ditra uncoupling membrane, and serves the same function with the added capability of accepting the heat wire. One important difference is that a ¼” square notched trowel is used to spread the thinset instead of the regular Ditra trowel. Once the mat has been installed, the wire can be routed into the mat. The heating cable must be placed no closer than 3” from the wall, and 8” from a heat source, (Hot are vent, base board heat, etc.). The cable and probes must be tested with the appropriate meters before they installed, after they have been placed in the mat, and after the tile has been installed to retain the warrantee.
