Arthur is a common masculine given name. Its etymology is disputed, but its popularity derives from its being the name of the legendary hero King Arthur.
Art and Artie are diminutive forms of the name. A common spelling variant used in many Slavic, Romance, and Germanic languages is Artur.
The origin of the name Arthur remains a matter of debate. Some suggest it is derived from the Roman nomen gentile (family name) Artōrius, of obscure and contested etymology (but possibly of Messapic or Etruscan origin). Some scholars have noted that the legendary King Arthur's name only appears as Arthur, or Arturus, in early Latin Arthurian texts, never as Artōrius (although the Classical Latin Artōrius became Arturius in some Vulgar Latin dialects). However, this may not say anything about the origin of the name Arthur, as Artōrius would regularly become Art(h)ur when borrowed into Welsh.
Another possibility is that it is derived from a Brittonic patronym *Arto-rīg-ios (the root of which, *arto-rīg- "bear-king" is to be found in the Old Irish personal name Art-ri) via a Latinized form Artōrius. Less likely is the commonly proposed derivation from Welsh arth "bear" + (g)wr "man" (earlier *Arto-uiros in Brittonic); there are phonological difficulties with this theory—notably that a Brittonic compound name *Arto-uiros should produce Old Welsh *Artgur and Middle/Modern Welsh *Arthwr and not Arthur (in Welsh poetry the name is always spelled Arthur and is exclusively rhymed with words ending in -ur—never words ending in -wr—which confirms that the second element cannot be [g]wr "man").

Steamboat Bill, Jr. is a 1928 feature-length comedy silent film featuring Buster Keaton. Released by United Artists, the film is the last product of Keaton's independent production team and set of gag writers. It was not a box-office success and proved to be the last picture Keaton would make for United Artists. Keaton would end up moving to MGM where he would make one last film with his trademark style, The Cameraman, before all of his creative control was taken away by the studio.
The director was Charles Reisner, the credited writer was Carl Harbaugh (although Keaton wrote the film and publicly called Harbaugh useless but "on the payroll"), and also featured Ernest Torrence, Marion Byron, and Tom Lewis.
The film was named after a popular Arthur Collins 1911 song, "Steamboat Bill".
William "Steamboat Bill" Canfield is the owner and captain of a paddle steamer that has seen better days. He eagerly awaits the arrival of his college student son, whom he has not seen since the lad was a baby. Expecting a big, husky man like himself to help him compete with businessman John James King and his brand new, luxurious riverboat, he is sorely disappointed with his slight, awkward offspring, who shows up with a pencil moustache, a ukulele and a beret. He becomes outraged when he discovers that his son and King's daughter Kitty, also visiting her father, are in love. Both business rivals are determined to break up the relationship.

As I was on Youtube, I decided that listening to "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home?" would be a nice song to hear. I was shocked to find out that no one had posted it yet, so that's what I've done. Anyways, here is the info: Its words and music were written by Hughie Cannon (1877--1912), an American songwriter and pianist, in 1902. Arthur Collins (1864-1933) recorded it the same year, and it was a #1 hit.
Pardon the image choices on this one; in retrospect I think they're rather stupid. Arthur Francis Collins (February 7, 1864 -- August 3, 1933) recorded this song in 1919. He was considered "The King of the Ragtime Singers," and recorded songs like "Goodbye, Liza Jane," "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "The Preacher and the Bear," "No One Loves a Fat Man," "Fondle Me," and "If I'm Going to Die, I'm Going to Have Some Fun." The chorus is something like: "I'm gonna bathe myself in carbolic acid, and eat a pound of Paris Green. Chew all the heads off a box of sulfur matches, and wash em down with gasoline. Then I'll hang myself from a weeping willow tree....maybe." Just a hint of gallows humor, that. Images are: Johann Tischbein, Felicien Rops, H.R. Giger, and Wilfried Satty.
Blue Amberol Cylinder 1560, played on an Edison Home phonograph. This is the unannounced direct recorded version. Arthur Collins's best known song, first recorded in 1905 and it was a huge seller.

Arthur Collins (1864-1933) was an American baritone singer, who was regarded as "King of the Ragtime Singers." "The Preacher and the Bear" is considered to be his signature recording.

Born in Philadelphia, Collins moved with his family to Barnegat, New Jersey around 1879 and as a teenager worked as a volunteer lifesaver on the Jersey shore, beginning an enthusiasm for sailing that became a lifelong pursuit. However, his fine baritone voice -- heard in church and in local concert appearances -- convinced Collins' family to send him back to Philadelphia for formal training. After concluding his studies, Collins spent some 15 years touring with various stock companies and appearing in summer opera in St. Louis. None of these ventures turned out any long term prospects for Collins, and when he married actress and singer Anna Leah Connelly in 1895 Collins swore off show business and decided to study for a career in bookkeeping. Taking occasional roles for extra money, Collin...
