John Charles Welsh (1568–1622) was a Scottish Presbyterian leader.
He was born in Dumfriesshire and, after a wayward youth, attended the University of Edinburgh and obtained his MA in 1588. He became a minister in Selkirk, and prior to 1596 and leaving Selkirk, married Elizabeth, a daughter of John Knox.
Welsh later ministered in Kirkcudbright and in Ayr, where he spent five years and with which he was afterwards associated. His preaching resulted in his imprisonment by order of King James VI of Scotland. In 1606 he was exiled to France, where he continued his activities. His grandson was the Covenanters' leader, John Welsh of Irongray.
John Welsh may refer to:
John Welch (7 November 1914 in Wexford – 21 April 1985 in London) was an Irish actor.
After an early stage career in Dublin, Welch moved into British film and television in the 1950s. His roles included James Forsyte in the 1967 BBC dramatisation of John Galsworthy's The Forsyte Saga, as well as the butler Merriman in The Duchess of Duke Street, Sgt. Cuff in The Moonstone and a brief scene as the barber in Brideshead Revisited. He also appeared in Hancock's Half Hour, The Brothers, Prince Regent, To Serve Them All My Days and The Citadel, and played the assistant chief constable in the early series of Softly, Softly. Welsh also appeared in a number of different roles on Danger Man that included British diplomats and butlers.
The Rt Rev John Francis Welsh, DD was Bishop of Trinidad and Tobago from 1904 until his death in1916.
He was born in Huddersfield in 1856 and educated at Christ Church, Oxford. After graduation he was ordained in 1882 and began his ecclesiastical career with a curacy at St James, Whitehaven. From 1883 until 1886 he was a Lecturer at St Bees’ Theological College and from then (until his elevation to the Episcopate) Principal of Warminster Missionary College.
Ayr is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood) which elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) via the plurality (first past the post) electoral system. It is also one of nine constituencies in the South Scotland electoral region which elects seven additional members to the Scottish Parliament via a proportional electoral system known as the Additional Members System (abbreviated AMS) which allows for fairer representation for the region as a whole.
The other eight constituencies of the South Scotland region are Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, Clydesdale, Dumfriesshire, East Lothian, Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, Galloway and West Dumfries, Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley and Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale. The region covers the Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire, Scottish Borders and South Ayrshire council areas in full and elements of the East Lothian, Midlothian and South Lanarkshire council areas.
Ayr was a royal burgh that returned one commissioner to the Parliament of Scotland and to the Convention of Estates.
After the Acts of Union 1707, Ayr, Campbeltown, Inveraray, Irvine and Rothesay formed the Ayr district of burghs, returning one member between them to the House of Commons of Great Britain.
Ayrshire (Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Inbhir Àir, Scottish Gaelic pronunciation: [ʃirˠəxk iɲiˈɾʲaːɾʲ]) is a historic county in south-west Scotland, located on the shores of the Firth of Clyde. It is also, under the name the County of Ayr, a registration county. Its principal towns include Ayr, Kilmarnock and Irvine. Like the other counties of Scotland, it currently has no administrative function, instead being sub-divided into the council areas of North Ayrshire, South Ayrshire and East Ayrshire. It has a population of approximately 366,800.
The electoral and valuation area named Ayrshire covers the three council areas of South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire, therefore including the Isle of Arran, Great Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae. The three islands were part of the County of Bute until 1975 and are not always included when the term Ayrshire is applied to the region. The same area is known as Ayrshire and Arran in other contexts.
Ayrshire is one of the most agriculturally fertile regions of Scotland. Potatoes are grown in fields near the coast, using seaweed-based fertiliser, and in addition the region produces pork products, other root vegetables, and cattle (see below); and summer berries such as strawberries are grown abundantly.
