John Augustus Roebling (born Johann August Röbling; June 12, 1806 – July 22, 1869) was a German-born American civil engineer. He designed and built wire rope suspension bridges, in particular the Brooklyn Bridge, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
At first John attended the gymnasium in Mühlhausen. Recognizing his intelligence at a young age, Roebling's mother, Friederike Dorothea Roebling arranged for him to be tutored in mathematics and science at Erfurt by Ephraim Salomon Unger. He went to Erfurt when he was 15. In 1824 he passed his Surveyor's examination and returned home for a year. In 1824 he enrolled for two semesters at the Bauakademie in Berlin where he studied architecture and engineering under Martin Friedrich Rabe (1765–1856), bridge construction and foundation construction under Johann Friedrich Dietlein (1782–1837), hydraulics under Johann Albert Eytelwein (1764–1848), and languages. Roebling also attended lectures of the philosopher Hegel. Roebling developed an interest in natural philosophy and many years later he worked on a 1000-page treatise about his own concepts of the universe.

Leopold -- a man living in the 1870s -- is puzzled by Stuart's tiny camera, follows him back through the gap, and they both ended up in the present day. Leopold is clueless about his new surroundings. He gets help and insight from Charlie who thinks that Leopold is an actor who is always in character. Leopold is a highly intelligent man and tries his best to learn and even improve the modern conveniences that he encounters.

It was the last session of the day and it ended badly. I've run MANY track events at Roebling Road Raceway over 10+ years and never had the experience I had this day. On the second hot lap I was entering turn 3 no differently than any other time and prior to the apex the back end stepped out. There was no warning at all, the car just snapped to the left and before I knew it the front of the car was off the track and I was flying over the grass toward the berm on the outside of the track. Looking at the telemetry from my TraqMate system I was going about 100 MPH when I lost control; I scrubbed off some speed before hitting the berm at 60 MPH and experienced 4 Gs coming to a stop. I heard later than another car had gone off track at the entrance to turn 3 and the belief is that they bro...
Northern Kentucky's John A. Roebling Bridge was once the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,057 feet. It was a marvel of civil engineering—and a model for the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. In this segment we get some amazing bird's-eye views of the bridge from a helicopter and from the top of the 75-foot towers. John Roebling was already well known as a bridge designer and the inventor of the wire rope when he was hired to build the Ohio River bridge linking Covington, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Construction began in 1856, but it would be more than a decade before it opened due to financial downturns and the Civil War. The bridge's two massive towers with their 30-foot arches were built from limestone and sandstone. The cables were spun from wrought iron imported from Englan...
