Kintail (Scottish Gaelic: Cinn Tàile) is an area of mountains in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. It is located in the Highland Council area. It consists of the mountains to the north of Glen Shiel and the A87 road between the heads of Loch Duich and Loch Cluanie; its boundaries, other than Glen Shiel, are generally taken to be the valleys of Strath Croe and Gleann Gaorsaic to the north and An Caorann Mòr to the east.
The area is known chiefly for the Five Sisters Of Kintail (Gaelic: Còig Peathraichean Chinn Tàile, although not a name derived from the Gaelic, it has individual names for each: Sgùrr na Ciste Duibhe, Sgùrr na Càrnach, Sgùrr Fhuaran, Sgùrr nan Spàinteach and Sgùrr nan Saighead), a high ridge some 8 km (5.0 mi) long rising steeply from Glen Shiel to a maximum height of 1,067 metres (3,501 feet). The five distinctly pointed summits are a well known landmark and a popular hillwalking expedition. Three of the Five Sisters, which are all over 3,000 feet, are classified as full Munros, with the other two being subsidiary Munro tops. The ridge containing the Five Sisters continues unbroken to the east where it takes in a further three Munros, often known as the Brothers. Beinn Fhada (Ben Attow) is the other main mountain in the area.
Sgurr Fhuaran is one of three mountains that make up the Five Sisters of Kintail (the other two being Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe and Sgurr na Càrnach) and when seen from Màm Ratagain above Loch Duich, the Five Sisters are one of the best known views in the Western Highlands of Scotland. The legend of the Five Sisters of Kintail tells the story of seven sisters, daughters of a local farmer, two of whom married visiting brothers who said they would send their five other brothers for the remaining five sisters to wed. However, no one returned and the five remaining sisters agreed for a local wizard to transform them into peaks in order to preserve their beauty while they waited.[4] Sgurr Fhuaran is a distinctive peak with steep slopes which drop away to Glen Shiel on its western flank at an ang...
Track 13 'Kintail' by The Tannahill Weavers from the 1997 compilation album 'Piping Hot A Celtic Bagpipe Collection'. The Tannahill Weavers are a popular band who perform traditional Scottish music. Releasing their first album in 1976 they became notable for being one of the first popular bands to incorporate the sound of the Great Highland Bagpipe (the Highland bagpipes are primarily a solo instrument) in an ensemble setting, and in doing so helped to change the sound of Scottish traditional music. The band was formed in 1968, practising in a back room of the McKay family's rented council house and first performed at St. Peter's Folk Club, Glenburn, Paisley. They are named after Scottish poet Robert Tannahill, known as the 'Weaver Poet,' and have recorded several of his songs.

The Affric kintail Way is a 44 mile long distance walk from Drumnadrochit to Morvich in the Scottish Highlands. I started from Inverness, adding an extra 18 miles to the journey, covering approximately 62 miles (20 miles per day) through Thursday morning to late Saturday evening. I carried all my gear and camped out every night before catching the bus home on Sunday morning.
I've re-packaged this tune to include a slide show of the Kintail area in Scotland. A most beautiful part of Scotland. The last image is one taken about 100 yards below my Grannies house. Again, this is one of my own tunes which I composed last year. It's just been recorded by Tom Alexander of the Alexander brothers on his latest cd . You can purchase the cd here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alexander.brothers/ All photos used are ones taken from the internet

Muriel Gray leads us over the Five Sisters of Kintail in Glen Shiel. At the time this video was made only two of the tops on the ridge were classed as Munros, Sgurr na Ciste Duidhe and Sgurr Fhuaran, but now the middle top, Sgurr na Carnach, has also attained Munro status. Acclaimed Gaelic poet, Sorley MacLean, explains the translation and meaning of the original two Munro names.

We are a group of artists, living and working in Scotland (Hungarian, Scots and Norwegian). We wanted to make our small contribution to an exciting moment in this wonderful country's history. We started with Gerda's love song to Scotland - Machu Picchu - and built a story around it, creating characters for the band members, who go on a journey from Edinburgh to Glen Affric and Kintail. We conceived the idea, filmed, edited and published the video all in only 7 days. We had a ball! We hope you enjoy the fun as much as we did.
