The College for Creative Studies traces its heritage back to 1906 when a group of local civic leaders, inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement, formed the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. The Society’s mission was to keep the ideals of beauty and craftsmanship alive in what was rapidly becoming an industrialized world. At their original location on Farmer Street, Society members began teaching informal classes in basic design, drawing and woodcarving. In 1911, they opened a gallery where students as well as prominent modern artists displayed and sold their work.

THIS WEEK ON "THE SOUL STUDIEUX": We had SABRINA NELSON vibin' with us! She is a Visual Artist from Detroit who was born in the 60s [during the Detroit riots]--a painter by degree from Detroit's Center for Creative Studies, a teacher at the Detroit Institute of Arts [DIA], and works hard at motivating students to pursue a Degree in Art at the College for Creative Studies [CCS]. Her artwork gives a "voice to the voiceless", tells us stories about strength, love and spirituality, and inspires all who may lay eyes upon the various pieces she creates--those which are truly outward expressions of her very soul and the souls of those who inspire her. TUNE IN to hear one of Detroit's "Creatives", and what motivates her--from concept to canvas.
