A BBC for Germany: Hugh Greene in War and Occupation
During and after the Second World War, Sir Hugh Carleton Greene, later to become Director-General of the BBC, was one of the most influential figures in German-language broadcasting, first as Head of the BBC German Service, and then as Chief Controller for Broadcasting for the British zone of occupation. Drawing on original material from the BBC Written Archives Centre and the National Archives, as well as different accounts of Greene’s life, Emily Oliver will talk about how a man with no previous radio experience came to shape not only the BBC’s German output during the war, but also the German post-war broadcasting landscape by creating the NWDR (now the NDR) as a ‘BBC for Germany’. She will look at Greene’s resistance to authority figures attempting to limit his service’s independence, ...

TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO
(6 Nov 1961) The occasion was the 25th anniversary of the BBC Television Service, the first in the world. And Movietone, by the way, was first to supply the newsreel for the service until television closed down at the beginning of World War Two. Her Majesty the Queen was received by Sir Arthur Fforde (Chairman) and Mr Hugh Carleton-Greene (Director General), when she visited the BBC Television Centre on this occasion. She went through all departments, and finally had a chat with some of the actors.

☆ BBC export endcap, 1960s [silent]
From the http://www.transdiffusion.org/ archives...
We tend to think of endcaps as being the preserve of commercial companies - seen on the end of ITV productions or showing the various independent producers of American shows.
We don't tend to associate them with the BBC. We certainly don't associate them with BBC productions - other than seeing BBC Worldwide's various idents on DVD and on YouTube. But that isn't to say BBC endcaps don't exist.

SUMMARY
=======
Sir Hugh Carleton Greene (15 November 1910 – 19 February 1987) was a British journalist and television executive. He was director-general of the BBC from 1960 to 1969.
After working for newspapers in the 1930s, Greene spent most of his later career with the BBC, rising through the managerial ranks of overseas broadcasting and then news for the main domestic channels. As director-general he led a modernisation of the BBC, increasing its audience in the face of competition from commercial television, which was launched in Britain in 1956 and had initially been more popular than the BBC. He encountered opposition from some politicians and activists opposed to his modernising agenda, but under his leadership the BBC was recognised to be outperforming its commercial rival and was awarded a second television channel (BBC Two) by the British government and authorised to introduce colour television to Britain.
After retiring from the BBC, Greene published several books, one in collaboration with his brother, the novelist Graham Greene, and made television programmes both for the BBC and its commercial rival.

She will look at Greene’s resistance to authority figures attempting to limit his service’s independence, his willingness to shield his employees from outside interference, and his keen sense of what would attract and retain listeners.
Emily Oliver teaches German and French at Magdalen College School, Oxford. Her research focuses on Anglo-German cultural relations and media in the twentieth century. After gaining a PhD at the University of Birmingham, she worked as postdoctoral research associate at King’s College London on the European Research Council project ‘Beyond Enemy Lines: Literature and Film in the British and American Zones of Occupied Germany’. In 2016, she was awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship to pursue her research project ‘Broadcasting Nations: A History of the BBC German Service (1938-1999)’ at the University of Warwick, before assuming the position of Senior Instructor in German at the University of Oxford in 2019. Emily’s work on the BBC German Service has been featured on BBC Radio 4 (‘Beating Hitler with Humour’), the BBC World Service (‘Comrade Africa: How Communist East Germany Tried to Influence Africa via Radio during the Cold War’), and in a TV documentary on BBC 4 and ARD (‘London Calling: Cold War Letters / Briefe aus dem Kalten Krieg’). Her first book, Shakespeare and German Reunification: The Interface of Politics and Performance, was published in 2017.

We don't tend to associate them with the BBC. We certainly don't associate them with BBC productions - other than seeing BBC Worldwide's various idents on DVD and on YouTube. But that isn't to say BBC endcaps don't exist.
The BBC has in its time made a lot of programming for export, and this was the endcap it used in the 1960s. We have a copy because the BBC didn't keep their domestic copy of the docudrama 'The War Game' when the then Director-General Hugh Carleton Greene banned it. It did, however, keep the export copy that it promptly sold domestically to film societies and many private schools.
