Nearly 2,500 migrants arrived on Thursday (October 1) at the Greek port of Piraeus aboard a ferry chartered by the government to relieve conditions on the eastern Aegean islands that has seen an influx of migrants.
As the islands get a reprieve, the situation in the Greek capital has worsened.
Many of those disembarking from the "Eleftherios Venizelos" want to move on to other European countries and some have already purchased a bus ticket that will take them north to the Greek border with Macedonia, with the hope that they can then reach Germany or other affluent northern European countries.
A refugee from Syria, Moheedi, left his family behind to brave the journey through Turkey and over the sea passage alone to find a peaceful place for them to live together.
"It's complicated, I don't know, I'm happy and sad, because I'm away from my family... it's complicated feelings. But I hope to get what I want, all my family and me," said 38-year-old Moheedi, who hopes to get asylum in Germany and then bring his family safely and legally.
But for an increasing number of migrants, Athens is the last stop.
Lacking passports and having spent nearly all their money on being smuggled from Turkey and then ferried to the mainland, many destitute migrants are forced to sleep on the streets and squares of the capital.
Victoria Square in Athens has been transformed into a makeshift camp in recent weeks with thousands of mainly Afghan refugees sleeping rough in the open, braving the occasional downpour as autumn sets in.
Ghosai, a 23-year-old migrant from the city of Ahvaz in Iran, left nearly a month ago with his young cousins and uncle, passing through Istanbul and Izmir before finding a smuggler to help them cross across to the Greek island of Chios.
They have been sharing a tent in the square for almost a week, waiting for family members back in Iran to wire them money.
"The problem, we come here but we finish our money, everyone you see there, the families, the women the men, finish their money, they want money," said Ghosai.
Locals are divided, with some bringing bags of food and clothes, and others demanding that they be relocated.
School teacher Marios Mihailidis said he was not unsympathetic to the migrants' plight, but the situation at the square was out of control.
"We can no longer use the square, no one can walk on it, it is filthy, there is probably disease, and within all this poverty and abandonment there is drug dealing and human trafficking," said Mihailidis.
Tensions rose on Thursday, as local shopkeepers and anti-fascist movements held two rival rallies in the square, with one group carrying a banner reading: "We Are Losing Our Jobs, End This Siege" and the other "Refugees Welcome, Bring Your Families."
At the square, about half a dozen city buses chartered by the government were waiting to take the refugees to a disused Olympic Games venue north of Athens for temporary shelter as the government scrambles to accommodate them.
But as they began to board, scores packed up their tents and left, distrustful of the authorities' intentions.
A record number of more than 420,000 refugees and migrants have taken rickety boats across the Mediterranean to Europe this year, 309,000 via Greece, according to the International Organization for Migration.

A ferry carrying about 2,500 Syrian refugees from the Greek eastern Aegean Sea islands reached Greece's main port near Athens on Thursday.
Greece has been overwhelmed this year by more than 156,000 migrants since January. Most undocumented migrants from Syria chose Greece's eastern Aegean islands as their first destination. From the Aegean islands, the refugees then go to other European countries.
In order to ease the influx of migrants, the government chartered the ferry to transport people from the islands to the port of Piraeus.

Nearly 2,500 migrants arrived on Thursday (October 1) at the Greek port of Piraeus aboard a ferry chartered by the government to relieve conditions on the eastern Aegean islands that has seen an influx of migrants. As the islands get a reprieve, the situation in the Greek capital has worsened. A ferry carrying about 2,500 Syrian refugees from the Greek eastern Aegean Sea islands reached Greece's main port near Athens on Thursday. Greece has been overwhelmed this year by more than 156,000 migrants since January. Most undocumented migrants from Syria chose Greece's eastern Aegean islands as their first destination. From the Aegean islands, the refugees then go to other European countries. Nearly 2,500 migrants arrived on Thursday (October 1) at the Greek port of Piraeus aboard a ferry chartered by the government to relieve conditions on the eastern Aegean islands that has seen an influx of migrants.
As the islands get a reprieve, the situation in the Greek capital has worsened.
Many of those disembarking from the "Eleftherios Venizelos" want to move on to other European countries and some have already purchased a bus ticket that will take them north to the Greek border with Macedonia, with the hope that they can then reach Germany or other affluent northern European countries.
A refugee from Syria, Moheedi, left his family behind to brave the journey through Turkey and over the sea passage alone to find a peaceful place for them to live together.
"It's complicated, I don't know, I'm happy and sad, because I'm away from my family... it's complicated feelings. But I hope to get what I want, all my family and me," said 38-year-old Moheedi, who hopes to get asylum in Germany and then bring his family safely and legally.
But for an increasing number of migrants, Athens is the last stop.
Lacking passports and having spent nearly all their money on being smuggled from Turkey and then ferried to the mainland, many destitute migrants are forced to sleep on the streets and squares of the capital.
Victoria Square in Athens has been transformed into a makeshift camp in recent weeks with thousands of mainly Afghan refugees sleeping rough in the open, braving the occasional downpour as autumn sets in.
Ghosai, a 23-year-old migrant from the city of Ahvaz in Iran, left nearly a month ago with his young cousins and uncle, passing through Istanbul and Izmir before finding a smuggler to help them cross across to the Greek island of Chios.
They have been sharing a tent in the square for almost a week, waiting for family members back in Iran to wire them money.
"The problem, we come here but we finish our money, everyone you see there, the families, the women the men, finish their money, they want money," said Ghosai.
Locals are divided, with some bringing bags of food and clothes, and others demanding that they be relocated.
School teacher Marios Mihailidis said he was not unsympathetic to the migrants' plight, but the situation at the square was out of control.
"We can no longer use the square, no one can walk on it, it is filthy, there is probably disease, and within all this poverty and abandonment there is drug dealing and human trafficking," said Mihailidis.
Tensions rose on Thursday, as local shopkeepers and anti-fascist movements held two rival rallies in the square, with one group carrying a banner reading: "We Are Losing Our Jobs, End This Siege" and the other "Refugees Welcome, Bring Your Families."
At the square, about half a dozen city buses chartered by the government were waiting to take the refugees to a disused Olympic Games venue north of Athens for temporary shelter as the government scrambles to accommodate them.
But as they began to board, scores packed up their tents and left, distrustful of the authorities' intentions.
A record number of more than 420,000 refugees and migrants have taken rickety boats across the Mediterranean to Europe this year, 309,000 via Greece, according to the International Organization for Migration.

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece asked its passenger ferry companies and travel agencies on Friday to cut back on bringing migrants and refugees from frontline islands to the mainland and said its own chartered ships would stay put for a few days.
The moves, described by Greece's shipping minister as temporary, are designed to stem a flow of people mostly fleeing from violence in the Middle East, as border controls further north in the Balkans threaten to strand tens of thousands in Greece.
Most refugees arrive in the European Union after a short but at times dangerous journey by small boats from Turkey to nearby Greece islands such as Lesbos.
At least 20,000 refugees and migrants have been stranded in Greece after border shutdowns through the Balkans route to central and northern Europe.
Greece on Thursday recalled its ambassador to Austria in anger over the border closures and has threatened to block European Union decision-making unless the bloc comes up with concerted action to deal with the crisis.
"We have taken some actions because of border closings, including an increase of temporary shelter spaces and a relative slowdown of the transport of migrants from the islands to the port of Piraeus," Shipping Minister Thodoris Dritsas told Skai TV.
He said three ships chartered specifically to move migrants to the Greek mainland would be docked at the islands and accommodate refugees for 'two or three days'.
"It is a small scale slowdown (of flows to the mainland)," he said.
Greece has been unable to contain thousands of refugees at registration camps, with hundreds taking to the nation's highways to walk toward the northern border it shares with Macedonia. Some were sleeping rough in central Athens, and others in stadiums.
Macedonia, to the immediate north, is accepting only Iraqis and Syrians, witnesses say, with Afghans being turned back. There were an estimated 2,500 people amassed at Idomeni, the border area with Macedonia early Friday, with hundreds more on their way.

The Rio--Antirrio bridge, officially the Charilaos Trikoupis bridge after the statesman who first envisaged it, is the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge. No visit to Greece would be complete a trip to one of the country's fourteen hundred islands, so Christina detours off her route to see the island of Chios in the Aegean Sea. It's a long voyage but once she's arrived Christina visits the Nea Momi monastery. Now home to one solitary nun, the monastery was the site of the slaughter of five thousand men, women and children by the Ottomans in 1822. Chios was one if the most wealthy islands in the Aegean and its prosperity was founded on just one much coveted commodity: mastic, the essential ingredient in chewing gum.
Christina returns to the mainland and travels by bus to the romantic town of Nafplio, dominated by the fortress of Palamide. From here she journeys on towards Areopoli, via the stunning Langada pass between Sparta and Kalamata. The Spartans were ancient warrior people and Areopoli is named after Aries, the god of war. Christina spends a few days exploring the Mani region by mountain bike.. The further south she rides the more arid and sparse the vegetation becomes, until at last she reaches the point which is as far south as you can go in mainland Greece, thought by the ancient Greeks to be the entrance to Hades.
From the Mani region Christina heads back north to Zagorohoria, a group of villages in a mountainous region near the Albanian border. From the village of Mikro Papingo she plans to trek through the mountains, but first her guide suggests a visit to the local evil eye woman to experience an intense ritual to restore her energy. The destination of her trek through the stunning mountain scenery is the Dragon Lake. It takes seven hours to reach the top but Christina and her guide plan to spend the night at a refuge hut. When they reach Dragon Lake at six o'clock the next morning there's no sign of the dragon that reputedly lurks in the depths but breathtaking views are well worth the exertion and early rise!
Nearing the end of her journey Christina travels across northern Greece to Seres near the Bulgarian border, where she witnesses an ancient fire-walking festival called Anastenaria, formed every year in May. The festival commemorates a church fire in 1250 when the holy icons were heard groaning in the flames. Local legend claims they were rescued by devoted villagers who emerged unscathed from the burning building. The participants work themselves into a frenzy to the music of lyres and drums. When the fires are lit the red-hot coals are raked out and the villagers run back and forth over the coals without burning their feet.
To conclude her trip Christina visits the incredible monasteries of Meteora, perched high on inaccessible pinnacles of rock and deriving their names from the Greek meteora, 'rocks in the air'. No-one knows for sure how the monasteries were built, but as Christina attempts to climb one of the rock formations she realises it must have been quite a feat.

The Rio--Antirrio bridge, officially the Charilaos Trikoupis bridge after the statesman who first envisaged it, is the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese to Antirrio on mainland Greece.
The 2,880 m (9,449 ft) long bridge (approximately 1.8 miles) dramatically improves access to and from the Peloponnese, which could previously be reached only by ferry or via the isthmus of Corinth in the east. Its width is 28 m (92 ft) — it has two vehicle lanes per direction, an emergency lane and a pedestrian walkway. Its five-span four-pylon cable-stayed portion of length 2,252 m (7,388 ft) is the world's second longest cable-stayed deck; only the deck of the Millau Viaduct in southern France is longer at 2,460 m (8,071 ft). However, as the latter is also supported by bearings at the pylons apart from cable stays, the Rio--Antirrio bridge deck might be considered the longest cable-stayed "suspended" deck.

EPISODE 2: GOLDEN AGE
The second part recounts the Greeks' heroic victory against the mighty Persian empire through the life of Themistocles, one of Athens' greatest generals.The episode opens in 490 B.C. when tiny Athens prepares to safeguard its growing economy and infant democracy against an invasion by Persian armies of Darius the Great. When the Persians arrive for battle, the Greek courier Phidippides runs 140 miles to Sparta in two days to solicit help from its army, according the historian Herodotus. But Sparta, Athens' rival, refuses to participate. The outnumbered Athenians, fighting to uphold their life of freedom, defeat the Persians and send them in humiliation back to Asia. But one Athenian, Themistocles, realizes Athens has not seen the last of the proud Persians. He persuades city leaders to build a fleet of war ships. These ships, called triremes, are "floating missiles" with projecting bows designed specifically to ram enemy vessels. While the Athenians execute their plans, the Persian ruler Darius dies and his son Xerxes succeeds to the throne. Under pressure to take revenge against the Greeks, he assembles an army of two million men. When the terrified Greeks ask the Delphic Oracle for advice, she simply tells them to flee. But Themistocles refuses to panic. Instead, he again petitions the Delphic Oracle, and this time she predicts that a "wooden wall" will protect the Greeks. First, he orders Athens abandoned, installs his fleet at the Aegean island of Salamis, and sends a "traitor" to the Persians to tell them that the Athenians are fleeing and are easy prey for the Persian fleet. When Persian ships move into the strait between Salamis and the Greek mainland, the triremes ram and sink 200 Persian vessels, and Athens wins the war. Greece, now master of the Mediterranean, undergoes one of the most startling intellectual and physical transformations in history. Pericles, the elected leader of Athens, oversees the building of the Parthenon and an extraordinary flourishing of the arts and sciences, laying the foundation for what is now called "Western culture."

While the Athenians execute their plans, the Persian ruler Darius dies and his son Xerxes succeeds to the throne. Under pressure to take revenge against the Greeks, he assembles an army of two million men. When the terrified Greeks ask the Delphic Oracle for advice, she simply tells them to flee. But Themistocles refuses to panic. Instead, he again petitions the Delphic Oracle, and this time she predicts that a "wooden wall" will protect the Greeks. Smyrneika songs arose out an urban population where the music of Greeks, Turks, Jews, and Armenians influenced each other in the early decades of the 20th century. This vibrant cultural scene was shattered when conflicts led to the 1922 Asia-Minor Catastrophe. The destruction of the port city of Smyrna (Izmir) led to the expulsion of two million Greeks from their homeland. Fortunately, highly skilled refugee musicians managed to keep alive their urban musical traditions by bringing their cosmopolitan talents to the Greek mainland and to America.

She grew up absorbing the songs of their generation, heard at weddings, dances, church events, and family gatherings. Despite many other musical influences vying for her attention, Sophia was drawn to the hearfelt and highly ornamented singing style of her Greek Asia-Minor roots. With many of the elders gone by the early 1980s, source material came primarily from her mentor, Dino Pappas, an important collector of early Greek recordings. She also collected songs from community members willing to sing into her tape recorder.
