A lavish ceremony made for a particularly memorable official launch of ‘Manama Capital of Gulf Tourism 2016’.
Much of the ceremony’s monumental appeal came from its backdrop – the iconic Bab Al Bahrain, or ‘Gateway to Bahrain’. Pico had selected the landmark as a powerfully symbolic location, with its striking architecture both expressing the cultural heritage of Bahrain and welcoming visitors to the Kingdom.
To kick it all off, Pico developed a complex show of pyrotechnics and live performances by traditional musicians, dancers and horses. All the elements were interwoven into a continuous spectacle that kept the crowds transfixed, reaching its crescendo as 3D video mapping against the 60-metre walls of the Bab Al Bahrain brought to life the history and touristic attractions of the Kingdom.
The event came after the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) selection of Manama as a prime tourist destination, citing Bahrain’s fascinating culture and wide range of visitor activities. As a ‘Capital of Gulf Tourism’, the year 2016 will see Manama introduce an array of engaging programmes and promotions to further enhance its tourist appeal.

Bahrain ( البحرين ), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين About this sound Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. It is an archipelago with Bahrain Island, the largest land mass, at 55 km (34 mi) long by 18 km (11 mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway while Iran lies 200 km (124 mi) to the north across the Persian Gulf. The peninsula of Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The population in 2010 stood at 1,234,571, including 666,172 non-nationals.[7]
Bahrain is the site of the ancient land of the Dilmun civilisation.[8] Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam in 628 AD. Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty under the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. Since early 2011, the country has experienced sustained protests and unrest inspired by the regional Arab Spring, particularly by the majority Shia population.[9]
Bahrain has the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf.[10] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[11] The country's capital, Manama, is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index (ranked 48th in the world) and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy.

The planned Qatar Bahrain Causeway will link Bahrain and Qatar and become the world's longest marine causeway.
Known for its oil and pearls, Bahrain is also home to many large structures, including the Bahrain World Trade Center and the Bahrain Financial Harbour, with a proposal in place to build the 1,022 m (3,353 ft) high Murjan Tower. The Qal'at al-Bahrain (the harbour and capital of the ancient land of Dilmun) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix takes place at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The Central Business District (CBD) of Manama, Bahrain, is the most vital part of the capital. Many of the city's hotels, office buildings, shops and restaurants are located in the CBD. It lies along the northern coast of Manama.
The CBD is considered one of the best shopping areas in the city; it has the Manama Souq (market, in Arabic), located near the Bab Al Bahrain (the Gateway of Bahrain). The old souq with its old world charm has a wide variety of goods, anything from spices, condiments, textiles, electronics to a dazzling array of jewelry.
In addition, the Bahrain World Trade Centre and the Bahrain Financial Harbour; this has Bahrain's tallest towers, and many of the country's largest banks and companies are also situated in the CBD.
Moda Mall is a high-end shopping complex in the ground floor of Bahrain World Trade Centre.. The Mall is home to some 160 designer stores, including Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Hermés, Kenzo, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Emporio Armani, Furla, Roberto Cavalli, Vertu, Ermenegildo Zenga, Agent Provocateur, Versace, Bottega Veneta, Escada, Max Mara, Loewe, Mathew Williamson, Valentino, Viktor & Rolf, amongst others. The mall will also house some of the finest jewellery stores such as De Beers, Tiffany & Co., Boucheron, Chopard, Chanel Jewellery, Van Cleef & Arpels and Folli Follie among others.

Manama (Arabic: المنامة Al Manāma) is the capital and largest city of Bahrain, with an approximate population of 155,000 people. Long an important trading center in the Persian Gulf, Manama is home to a very diverse population. After periods of Portuguese and Persian control and invasions from the Al Sauds and Oman, Bahrain established itself as an independent nation during the 19th century period of British hegemony. In the 20th century, Bahrain's oil wealth helped spur fast growth and in the 1990s a concerted diversification effort led to expansion in other industries and helped transform Manama into an important financial hub in the Middle East.
Manama was mentioned in Islamic chronicles at least as far back as 1345. It was conquered by Portugal in 1521 and then by the Persians in 1602. Since 1783 it has been under the control of the Al-Khalifa dynasty. Manama was declared a free port in 1958, and in 1971 it became the capital of independent Bahrain.

A lavish ceremony made for a particularly memorable official launch of ‘Manama Capital of Gulf Tourism 2016’.
Much of the ceremony’s monumental appeal came from its backdrop – the iconic Bab Al Bahrain, or ‘Gateway to Bahrain’. Pico had selected the landmark as a powerfully symbolic location, with its striking architecture both expressing the cultural heritage of Bahrain and welcoming visitors to the Kingdom.
To kick it all off, Pico developed a complex show of pyrotechnics and live performances by traditional musicians, dancers and horses. All the elements were interwoven into a continuous spectacle that kept the crowds transfixed, reaching its crescendo as 3D video mapping against the 60-metre walls of the Bab Al Bahrain brought to life the history and touristic attractions of the Kingdom.
The event came after the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) selection of Manama as a prime tourist destination, citing Bahrain’s fascinating culture and wide range of visitor activities. As a ‘Capital of Gulf Tourism’, the year 2016 will see Manama introduce an array of engaging programmes and promotions to further enhance its tourist appeal.

Bahrain ( البحرين ), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين About this sound Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. It is an archipelago with Bahrain Island, the largest land mass, at 55 km (34 mi) long by 18 km (11 mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway while Iran lies 200 km (124 mi) to the north across the Persian Gulf. The peninsula of Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The population in 2010 stood at 1,234,571, including 666,172 non-nationals.[7]
Bahrain is the site of the ancient land of the Dilmun civilisation.[8] Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam in 628 AD. Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty under the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. Since early 2011, the country has experienced sustained protests and unrest inspired by the regional Arab Spring, particularly by the majority Shia population.[9]
Bahrain has the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf.[10] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[11] The country's capital, Manama, is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index (ranked 48th in the world) and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy.

A Bahraini rights group has voiced serious concerns over a recent US government decision to renew arms sales to Manama as it continues repressing its critics. King Hamad has ordered the release of opposition and political prisoners. A Martyrs March is announced that includes a funeral of one the protesters killed earlier this week, along with the expected arrival of Hasan Mushaima, the leader of the opposition group Haq movement. Both pro-government and anti-government protests were reported.
Reportedly, over 100,000 anti-government protesters, more than 12% of the population, were out on the streets, while some media agencies claimed that this anti-goverment rally was more than 280,000 since the march extended up to 3 kilometers long.
21 February:
The state's Bahrain News Agency, a branch of Bahrain's Ministry of Culture and Information, claims that 300,000 Bahraini residents (more than 50% of the local population; Bahrain local population is 568,000), has gathered in the grounds opposite Al-Fateh Center in Manama to support the ruling monarchy.
It was announced that the 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix would be postponed from its original date on 13 March to a later date.
20 February:
Protesters camped out through the night at the Pearl Roundabout for the night after soldiers were ordered to withdraw. Food and electricity were provided to protesters.
19 February:
The military and then the police withdrew from the capital by orders of the government. Thousands of protesters were then able to return to the Pearl Roundabout.
18 February:
On 18 February, government forces used live ammunition against protesters, mourners and news reporters, with multiple casualties reported. Security forces fired on medics loading the wounded into ambulances. At least five people died and at least 66 were wounded. The protesters moved into the centre of Manama from the funerals of protesters killed in a security crackdown earlier in the week, and then were fired on by Bahraini police. Some protesters held their hands up high and shouted, "Peaceful! Peaceful!"
17 February:
At about 3:00 am local time, riot police moved in and, using tear gas and batons, dispersed thousands of anti-government protesters in Pearl Square. According to the opposition, three people died in the police operation while 231 sustained injuries. Sporadic clashes broke out around Manama hours after the riot police's attack on the makeshift encampment in the centre of the city. There were also reports of dozens of armoured vehicles moving towards the Pearl Roundabout. According to an Al Jazeera correspondent, hospitals in Manama were full of people injured during the police raid, including "doctors and emergency personnel who were overrun by the police while trying to attend to the wounded."
Saeed al-Shahabi, a leader of the opposition in London, warned the Saudi National Guard against interfering in the country. Reportedly, tens of thousands of Saudi military had entered Bahrain in 1995 to quell an uprising. Later in the day, a state of emergency was imposed.

Thousands of protestors continued to occupy Pearl Roundabout. A funeral procession for the protestor killed on 15 February was held, without any police interference. The protests size had increased by several hundred on this day, and parliament members announced their intentions to remove the royal family from their office positions.

Five bombs exploded in the heart of the Bahraini capital Manama on Monday (November 5).
Officials say two Asian street cleaners were killed.
The violence prompted mutual accusations from activists and a government trying to put down a mostly Shi'ite pro-democracy uprising.
The Interior Ministry said the bombs were homemade and described the blasts as "terrorist acts" - its term for violence by opposition activists.
Opposition politician Matar Matar of the Shi'ite party Wefaq said he doubted that opposition activists were behind Monday's attacks, noting that leading Shi'ite clerics had called on followers to avoid escalating the conflict with the government.
Injuries to protesters or police are relatively common in the 21-month-old uprising.
Attacks on the public, however, have been rare on the Gulf island, where the Sunni Muslim Al Khalifa dynasty rules over a majority Shi'ite population.
The BNA agency said the explosions took place between 4:30 and 9:30 a.m. (0130-0630 GMT) in the Qudaibiya and Adliya districts of Manama.
One of the attacks took place outside a cinema, where one of the street cleaners died when he kicked a package that blew up.
A witness said that blast caused little material damage, suggesting it had not been large.
Police chief Tariq Hasan Essa confirmed that two Asian men were killed.
[Tariq Hasan Essa, Chief of Police]:
"We are giving this statement in this news conference about the terror act which took place this morning in the Adliya, Gudaibiya and Hoora areas of the capital. Two Asian men were killed in the area of Gudaibiya. One person was critically injured in Adliya."
It was reported locally later in the evening that the third person also died from his injuries.

The violence prompted mutual accusations from activists and a government trying to put down a mostly Shi'ite pro-democracy uprising.
The Interior Ministry said the bombs were homemade and described the blasts as "terrorist acts" - its term for violence by opposition activists.
Opposition politician Matar Matar of the Shi'ite party Wefaq said he doubted that opposition activists were behind Monday's attacks, noting that leading Shi'ite clerics had called on followers to avoid escalating the conflict with the government.
Injuries to protesters or police are relatively common in the 21-month-old uprising.
Attacks on the public, however, have been rare on the Gulf island, where the Sunni Muslim Al Khalifa dynasty rules over a majority Shi'ite population.
The BNA agency said the explosions took place between 4:30 and 9:30 a.m. (0130-0630 GMT) in the Qudaibiya and Adliya districts of Manama.
One of the attacks took place outside a cinema, where one of the street cleaners died when he kicked a package that blew up.
A witness said that blast caused little material damage, suggesting it had not been large.
Police chief Tariq Hasan Essa confirmed that two Asian men were killed.
[Tariq Hasan Essa, Chief of Police]:
"We are giving this statement in this news conference about the terror act which took place this morning in the Adliya, Gudaibiya and Hoora areas of the capital. Two Asian men were killed in the area of Gudaibiya. One person was critically injured in Adliya."
It was reported locally later in the evening that the third person also died from his injuries.

MANAMA: Around 150 protesters clashed with Bahraini security forces in the capital Manama on Friday during demonstrations over the detention of a prominent opposition leader, eyewitnesses said.
Western-allied Bahrain has been wracked by tensions since the authorities put down protests in 2011, with Bahrain's majority Shi'ite Muslims demanding reforms and a bigger say in the running of the Sunni-ruled kingdom.
The discontent has worsened since the arrest on Dec. 28 of Sheikh Ali Salman, a Shi'ite Muslim cleric who heads al-Wefaq Islamic Society, after he led a protest rally against last November's elections, which were boycotted by the opposition.
Witnesses said a demonstration in front of Salman's house turned violent, with security forces firing bird-shot and tear gas at the demonstrators. Young men attacked security forces with iron rods and petrol bombs.
One eyewitness said he saw at least two people wounded by tear gas canisters, while Al-Wefaq sent journalists photographs of men wounded by bird shot.
The public prosecutor has accused Salman of several offences, including inciting people to overthrow the government. The prosecutor remanded him in custody on Sunday for 15 days pending further investigation.

At least five people were killed as clashes flared across the kingdom according to witnesses and officials.
The unrest that began last month has increasingly showed signs of a sectarian showdown The country s Sunni leaders are desperate to hold power and majority Shiites are calling for an end to their dynasty.
Wednesday s assault was launched at dawn in Pearl Square the centre of the uprising inspired by revolts in Egypt and Tunisia.
Hours later security forces were picking through burned debris and other remains of the protest camp.
The king s announcement Tuesday of a three-month emergency rule and the crackdown on Pearl Square sent a message that authorities will strike back with overwhelming force in the island nation which hosts the US Navy s 5th Fleet.
Security forces barred journalists and others from moving freely around Manama and other areas of the country a day after emergency rule was declared.
A 4 am 0700 gmt to 4 pm 1900 gmt curfew was imposed in most of the country.
Witnesses said at least two protesters were killed when the square was stormed.
Officials at Ibn Nafees Hospital said a third protester died later from wounds.
The witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisals from authorities.
But a government statement said the only fatalities during the raid were two policemen who were repeatedly run over by three vehicles containing protesters leaving the fringes of the scene.

Helicopters crisscrossed over the square which was cleared by security forces late last month but was later retaken by protesters after a deadly confrontation with army units.
During the attack protesters fled for cover into side streets and security forces blocked main roads into Manama.
Mobile phones were apparently jammed in central Manama during the height of the attack and Internet service remained at a crawl.
The government presented a different story saying security forces came under attack from about 250 saboteurs hurling petrol bombs and later fired back with tear gas.
It said no live ammunition was used.
For Bahrain s authorities clearing Pearl Square would be more of a symbolic blow against protesters than a strategic victory.
Opposition groups can still mobilise marches and take other actions against the leadership.
A Saudi-led force from Gulf allies fearful for their own regimes and worried about Shiite Iran s growing influence has been deployed here and grown to more than 1-thousand soldiers.
The government did not say whether the offensive included soldiers from other Gulf nations.
