Praslin is the second largest island (38 km2) of the Seychelles, lying 44 km (27 mi) northeast of Mahé. Praslin has a population of around 6,500 people and comprises two administrative districts: Baie Sainte Anne and Grand' Anse (Praslin). The main settlements are the Baie Ste Anne, Anse Volbert and Grand' Anse.
It was named Isle de Palmes by explorer Lazare Picault in 1744. During that time it was used as a hideaway by pirates and Arab merchants. In 1768 it was renamed Praslin in honor of French diplomat César Gabriel de Choiseul, duc de Praslin.
Praslin is known as a tourist destination with several hotels and resorts, as well as a number of beaches such as Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette.
It has substantial tracts of tropical forests with birds such as the endemic Seychelles bulbul and the Seychelles black parrot. The Vallée de Mai Nature Preserve is known for the unique coco de mer and vanilla orchids. It has been reported that General Charles George Gordon of Khartoum (1833-1885) was convinced that Vallée de Mai was the Biblical "Garden of Eden".

Holiday from Annie and Rene in Seychellen in November 2014
AJAY JAIN When you are on the Praslin island in the Seychelles, you do not need any reasons to love it - the emotions come out naturally. But if you must know, here are six of the many reasons that makes Praslin a great place to visit. #1 Rent a Boat These are available in abundance for many activities you can go for. Just head out for a picnic in the ocean, go snorkelling, lunch on the beaches, dive deep into the waters, or look out for wildlife on surrounding islands. All priced reasonably. # 2 Rent a Car The best way to get around the island. Not expensive, you can pick one starting at around 40 Euros a day. And you cannot spend more than 10 Euros of fuel in a day. If you get one, rent the classic Mini Moke - it’s a delightful little machine, even if a little underpowered for steep ...

BEST VACATIONS in Seychelles. When the going gets tough, the tough get going — and the rest of us conjure our ideal escape, dreaming of a remote island with crowd-free sands, bright blue waters and a tranquil aura. But when you're ready to turn that dream into a reality, set your sights on Seychelles, a cluster of 115 islands peppering the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. You may have caught sight of the scenery here before: The seemingly endless white beaches, giant boulders and swaying palms are the stuff of postcards, television commercials and desktop backgrounds. And while you're lounging along these famous shorelines, it's likely that the only other life forms you'll encounter will be the islands' colorful birds and humongous tortoises. The Seychelles islands are often ...

The Seychelles were disputed between France and Great Britain during the age of colonialism, with Britain ending up in control in 1814 after the Napoleonic Wars. The islands achieved independence in 1976; however, free elections did not occur until 1993. The politics of this island group remain in something of a state of flux, although this should not bother the tourist seeking a relaxing beach vacation. .
