Stadium station (Sound Transit)

Stadium is a light rail station located in Seattle, Washington. It is situated between the SODO and International District/Chinatown stations on the Central Link line, which runs from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport to Downtown Seattle as part of the Link Light Rail system. The station consists of an at-grade island platform at the intersection of the SODO Busway and South Royal Brougham Way in the SoDo neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, adjacent to CenturyLink Field and Safeco Field.

Stadium Station was proposed in 1998 as part of the segment between the Downtown Seattle and Beacon Hill tunnels and subsequently deferred months later. It was reinstated in 2005 and construction of the station was completed in May 2006, several years before Link light rail service began on July 18, 2009. Trains serve the station 20 hours a day every day; the headway between trains is 6 minutes during peak periods, with less frequent service at other times. Stadium Station is also served by several Sound Transit Express and King County Metro buses that stop on the SODO Busway west of the platform, as well as the Seattle Greyhound station east of the platform.

Perth Stadium

Perth Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Burswood, Western Australia being built by a consortium led by Brookfield Multiplex. The announcement of the Burswood location in June 2011 followed a series of earlier proposals for the stadium, including locations in Subiaco and East Perth.

History

Early proposals

In 2003 the Government of Western Australia commissioned a review to examine the future of major sporting venues in Western Australia. To conduct the review, a taskforce was appointed, chaired by John Langoulant, Chief Executive of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA, and it released its final report in May 2007. The report recommended the construction of a new 60,000 seat stadium at either Kitchener Park (which adjoins Subiaco Oval) or in East Perth, which would be suitable for Australian rules football, cricket and also rectangular-field sports such as Football, rugby union and rugby league. The taskforce recommended against the further development of Subiaco Oval, which would be demolished. It also recommended against building the new stadium at the site of Burswood, stating that "The development costs at the Burswood site would be significantly higher due to local site conditions and the need for significant upgrades to transport infrastructure."

Etymology

"Stadium" is the Latin form of the Greek word "stadion" (στάδιον), a measure of length equalling the length of 600 human feet. As feet are of variable length the exact length of a stadion depends on the exact length adopted for 1 foot at a given place and time. Although in modern terms 1 stadion = 600 ft (180 m), in a given historical context it may actually signify a length up to 15% larger or smaller.

The equivalent Roman measure, the stadium, had a similar length — about 185 m (607 ft) - but instead of being defined in feet was defined using the Roman standard passus to be a distance of 125 passūs (double-paces).
