Woy Woy is home to one of our nation's most decorated and driven athletes. The first woman in the world to play international wheelchair basketball, Liesl was 19 years old when she crashed riding her bicycle home from work. She fell two metres onto a cement driveway and broke her back. Forced to spend two months recovery time in bed, doctors told her she would never walk again.
To help pass the time Liesl had a friend bring her a small foam basketball and perspex backboard and it was then the physios asked if she would like to try wheelchair basketball.
Liesl knew she could do the basketball part, she just had to learn the "wheelchair driving". It wasn't long before Liesl made the NSW team and was then invited to trial for the Australian team. Liesl first represented Australia at the World Championships in 1990 and has since participated in four Paralympic Games and competed in her fifth Games in Beijing 2008.
Leisl is one of the WorkCover NSW Paralympian Speakers sharing the 'Work safe. Home safe.' message with employers and workers across NSW.

Liesl Tesch (17 May 1969-) is an Australian wheelchair basketball player. She has represented her country at five Paralympic Games, winning three total medals. She has made numerous appearances for her country at other wheelchair basketball events. Tesch also competed in the sport as a professional. She has worked towards creating additional professional leagues outside her own country. Tesch discovered wheelchair basketball during her rehabilitation from a bicycle accident that left her disabled at the age of 19.
Tesch was a member of the Australia women's national wheelchair basketball team at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. She was notable on the squad for her green hair. When asked what she thought of the Paralympic Village, she said "Wow. I'm stoked!!! Our house is great and it's going to be the best decorated in the Village." She is a 4 point player. She is a five time competitor for Australia at the Paralympic Games. In 2008, she was part of the squad that won a bronze medal at the Paralympic Games in Beijing. She was also part of the silver medal winning Paralympic Games teams at the 2000 Games in Sydney and the 2004 Games in Athens.
