A hanging scroll (Chinese: 立軸; pinyin: lìzhóu; also called 軸 or 掛軸) is one of the many traditional ways to display and exhibit Chinese painting and calligraphy. Displaying the art in this way allowed public appreciation and appraisal of the aesthetics of the scrolls in its entirety by the audience. It is to be distinguished from the handscroll, which was narrower and often much longer and not designed to be all visible at once. The technique was imported to Japan and Korea who each have their own traditions and aesthetics.
Hanging scrolls are generally intended to be displayed for short periods of time and are then rolled up to be tied and secured for storage. The hanging scrolls get rotated according to season or occasion, as such works are never intended to be on permanent display. The painting surface of the paper or silk can be mounted with decorative brocade silk borders. In the composition of a hanging scroll, the foreground is usually at the bottom of the scroll while the middle and far distances are at the middle and top respectively.

Available on DVD now! http://www.blueheronarts.com/product_info.php?products_id=439 This plum blossom painting conclude the "Four Gentlemen" hanging scroll series. I have tried very hard to take advantage of the green screen trick that I have just learned to give the viewer some idea about spirit of plum blossoms which bloom in the snow. I found theses nice pictures on the internet AFTER I have done the painting and in the video editing process to make it look like I was painting in front of those beautiful flowers instead of the green screen. I wish it helps you to get the essence of Chinese plum blossom painting. Let me know what do you think. The brush that I used for this plum painting is made of rooster feather. It worked out just as I expected - to loosen up control over detail...

Chrysanthemum is the last of the so-called "four-gentlemen" in Chinese art. The four plants are used to depict the unfolding of the seasons through the year, the plum blossom for winter, the orchid for spring, the bamboo for summer, and the chrysanthemum for autumn. So now it is my time to do chrysanthemum again. I had a walk-in customer the other day who wants to buy the four hanging scrolls on my living room wall, which are NFS because it was difficult to get them up there.:-) So he commissioned me to reproduce them for him. That is another reason I start doing this series of long hanging strips. If you are interested in watching them please subscribe to my channel. I hope your appreciate the beauty and sirit of chrysanthemum. Thanks for watching! Henry http://www.Blue...
