Zhang Xueliang or Chang Hsueh-liang (張學良; 3 June 1901 in Haicheng, China – 15 October 2001 in Honolulu, Hawaii), occasionally called Peter Hsueh Liang Chang and nicknamed the "Young Marshal" (少帥), was the effective ruler of northeast China and much of northern China after the assassination of his father, Zhang Zuolin, by the Japanese on 4 June 1928. He was an instigator of the 1936 Xi'an Incident, in which Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of China's ruling party, was arrested in order to force him to enter into a truce with the insurgent Chinese Communist Party and form a united front against Japan, which had occupied Manchuria. As a result, he spent over fifty years under house arrest, first in mainland China and then in Taiwan. He is regarded by the Chinese Communist Party as a patriotic hero.
Zhang was educated by private tutors and, unlike his father, felt at ease in the company of westerners. Zhang Xueliang graduated from Fengtian Military Academy, was made a Colonel in the Fengtian Army, and was appointed commander of his father's bodyguards in 1919. In 1921, he was sent to Japan to observe military maneuvers, where he developed a special interest in aircraft. Later, he developed an air corps for the Fengtian Army, which was widely used in the battles which took place within the Great Wall during the 1920s. In 1922, he was advanced to Major General and commanded an army-sized force, two years later he was also made commander of the air units. Upon the death of his father in 1928, he succeeded him as the leader of the Northeast Peace Preservation Forces (popularly "Northeast Army", 东北军 Dōngběi Jūn), which controlled China's northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Fengtian, and Jilin (Kirin). In December of the same year he proclaimed his allegiance to the Kuomintang (KMT).

张学良抗日演讲。 General Zhang Xueliang speaking against Japanese annex Manchuria, and Japanese invasion
This hour-long documentary chronicles the life of China's Young Marshal Zhang Xueliang, who was instrumental in establishing cooperation between the Nationalist and Communists Armies during the Second-Sino Japanese War. Recorded December 2014. Guqin music accompaniment by Gong Yi.
Nearly 80 years ago, Guizhou used to be place where a number of political prisoners were confined by Kuomingtang. Among those were two famous generals Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng.

However, this seems to be in error. The film shows "Marshal of All Chinese Forces, Chang-Tsuch-Liang" who is by modern spelling actually "Young Marshal" Zhang Xueliang. Then the film depicts "General Sun-Huan-Cahng" who appears to be in current spelling Sun Dianying. The action is said to be taking place near the Great Wall, as the Battle of Rehe indeed was, and speaks of plans to "Keep China United and Repel Invaders" which also appears to refer to fighting the Japanese. The film is silent. At the Battle of Rehe (February 21 to March 4, 1933) Japan captu...
Zhang Xueliang or Chang Hsueh-liang, nicknamed the "Young Marshal" (少帥), was the effective ruler of northeast China and much of northern China after the assassination of his father, Zhang Zuolin, by the Japanese (some say Soviet agents) in 1928. In this video, it is explains his role in Chinese history during this time peroid
Zhang Zuolin (simplified Chinese: 张作霖; traditional Chinese: 張作霖; pinyin: Zhāng Zuòlín; Wade--Giles: Chang Tso-lin; (1875--1928) was the warlord of Manchuria from 1916 to 1928 (see Warlord Era in China). He successfully invaded China proper in October 1924 in the Second Zhili-Fengtian War. He gained control of Peking, including China's internationally recognized government, in April 1926. The economy of Manchuria, the basis of Zhang's power, was overtaxed by his adventurism and collapsed in the winter of 1927-1928. Zhang was defeated by the Nationalist Kuomintang under Chiang Kai-shek in May 1928. He was killed by a bomb planted by a Japanese Kwantung Army officer on 4 June 1928.[2] Although Zhang had been Japan's proxy in China, Japanese militarists were infuriated by his failure to stop t...
