BE THE CHANGE YOU CAN, AND SIMULATE THE REST: experiential futures and participatory design at scale a seminar with Dr Stuart Candy -- design futuryst This session will introduce a powerful emerging approach to thinking creatively and feeling systematically into alternative futures. A foresight practitioner for over a decade, and dissatisfied with traditional methods of scenario communication, since 2006 Stuart has been developing a hybrid practice at the intersection of futures studies and design, "experiential futures" -- collaboratively creating situations which viscerally deepen understanding of possible worlds and our pathways into them. Against the backdrop of an impending federal election this seminar asks: What practices of public imagination might designers and others engage to help more effectively create the better world we'd like to see? The seminar will be followed by light refreshments. Design Futures Lab is a research group within the School of Media and Communication, RMIT University. The Lab makes, reflects and investigates through the practice of design. Design is seen as a collaborative human-centred action enabling conversations to occur. It explores contested terrains to materialise knowledge to propose and provoke alternative futures. Dr Stuart Candy (www.futuryst.com | @futuryst) is a strategic design facilitator and transmedia producer. He is currently incoming Assistant Professor in the Strategic Foresight and Innovation program in the Faculty of Design at OCAD University, Toronto. Previously he was in-house futurist for Arup based in Melbourne, and before that in San Francisco, where he also created the Strategic Foresight elective for the Design MBA at California College of the Arts. He was appointed the first Research Fellow of the Long Now Foundation in 2006.
