Lamb Review (2021)
Lamb will be released in North American theaters on Oct. 8. Review by Siddhant Adlakha.
An intriguing slow-burn that feels unsettling and comfortable in equal measure, Lamb takes a roundabout approach to revealing its bittersweet story of a farming couple who adopts a unique animal child and fully commits themselves to parenthood - at any cost. It's an undeniably absurdist take on parenthood, but also one that's truly sympathetic and strangely convincing.

A24's Lamb, directed and co-written by Valdimar Jóhannsson, is a quietly meditative film about a found family growing around Ada -- a girl with the head of a lamb. Lamb embraces a soft aesthetic for most of its run-time, but the movie's ending hints at its true moral, while also introducing a genuinely wild figure that has to be seen to be believed.

A24's Lamb, directed and co-written by Valdimar Jóhannsson, is a quietly meditative film about a found family growing around Ada -- a girl with the head of a lamb. It uses this tone to contrast against the occasional dark hints of the greater natural world around the minimal human cast, only truly coming into conflict in the film's final shocking act. Lamb embraces a soft aesthetic for most of its run-time, but the movie's ending hints at its true moral, while also introducing a genuinely wild figure that has to be seen to be believed.

Jeden z najwybitniejszych pisarzy irlandzkich, Bernard MacLaverty, w pierwszej od 16 lat powieści kreśli czuły obraz małżeństwa w zimowej podróży do Amsterdamu.

Creative Minds at Birmingham, the School of EDACS Writers and Artists Distinguished Speaker Series, welcomed writer Bernard MacLaverty on 21 November 2013 where he spoke and read from his collections of works at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.
Bernard MacLaverty was born in Belfast and lived there until 1975 when he moved to Scotland with his wife, Madeline, and four children. He has been a Medical Laboratory Technician, a mature student, a teacher of English and, for two years in the mid-eighties, Writer-in-Residence at the University of Aberdeen.
After living for a time in Edinburgh and the Isle of Islay he now lives in Glasgow. He is a member of Aosdana in Ireland and is Visiting Writer/Professor at the University of Strathclyde.
Currently he is employed as a teacher of creative writing on a postgraduate course in prose fiction run by the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Aberdeen.
Since the publication of Secrets and Other Stories in 1977, Bernard MacLaverty has been celebrated as one of the finest living short-story writers. Writing in the New York Times, William Boyd summoned the shades of Yeats, Joyce and Flann O'Brien, insisting that 'MacLaverty sits perfectly comfortably' in their company. The Guardian simply said 'MacLaverty is a master.'
The Collected Short Stories (released November 14 2013) includes most of Secrets, A Time to Dance, The Great Profundo, Walking the Dog and Matters of Life & Death.

Jeden z najwybitniejszych pisarzy irlandzkich, Bernard MacLaverty, w pierwszej od 16 lat powieści kreśli czuły obraz małżeństwa w zimowej podróży do Amsterdamu.
Mądra, poruszająca książka, osadzona we wspaniale melancholijnych plenerach zimowego Amsterdamu” – Olga Wróbel, „Kurzojady”

1. ‘Hail Mary full of grace…’ the prayers went on.
2. She had lost all the dignity he knew her to have.
3. He was trembling with anger or sorrow. He didn’t know which.
4. On a table was a cut-glass vase of irises, dying because she had been in bed for over a week. They were withering from the tips inward, scrolling themselves delicately, brown and neat. Clearing up after themselves.
5. The white classical profile on the ring was almost worn through and had become translucent and indistinct.
6. Had her grandmother got it from her grandmother? And if so what had she turned it into? She would nod her head from side to side and say, ‘How would I know a thing like that?’ keeping her place in the closed book with her finger.
‘Don’t be so inquisitive,’ she’d say.
7. A tiny rattle began as the kettle warmed up, then it bubbled and steam gushed quietly from its spout. The cards began to curl slightly in the jet of steam but she didn’t seem to be watching.
8. ‘Who is Brother Benignus?’ he asked. She seemed not to here. He asked again and she looked over her glasses.
‘He was a friend.’
His flourishing signature appeared again and again. Sometimes Bro Benignus, sometimes Benignus and once Iggy.
9. ‘A-A-A,’ she moved her pen from side to side. ‘Do-not-touch,’ she said and smiled.
10. … high arched eyebrows, her nose straight and thin, her mouth slightly smiling, yet not smiling – the way a mouth is after smiling.
11. ‘Who is that in the uniform?’ the boy asked.
‘He’s a soldier,’ she answered without looking up.
‘Oh,’ said the boy. ‘But who is he?’
‘He was a friend before you were born,’ she said. Then added, ‘Do I smell something cooking?’ Take your stamps and off you go. That’s the boy.’
12. At first she said no, but then she changed her mind. ‘Perhaps he was,’ she said, then smiled.
13. She knocked and put head round the door and said that she was walking to Devotions.
14. He carefully opened one and took out the letter and unfolded it, frail, khaki-coloured.
15. He did not bother to put the letter back into the envelope but opened another.
16. I am full of anger which has no direction.
17. Dear Mary, I am writing this to you from my hospital bed.
18. I do not know how to say this but I feel that I must do something, must sacrifice something to make up for the horror of the past year. In some strange way Christ has spoken to me through the carnage…
19. She struck him across the side of the face.
20. ‘You are dirt,’ she hissed, ‘and always will be dirt. I shall remember this till the day I die.’
21. She took her keys from her pocket, opened the bureau and began burning papers and cards.
23. They built into strata, glowing red and black.
24. Tears came into his eyes for the first time since she had died and he cried silently into the crook of his arm for the woman who had been his maiden aunt, his teller of tales, that she might forgive him.’
I hope this helps.
