A Kind of Loving 1962 Alan Arthur Bates )British drama film directed by John Schlesinger, based on the 1960 novel of the same name by Stan Barstow. It stars Alan Bates and June Ritchie as two lovers in 1960s Lancashire. The photography was by Denys Coop, and the music by Ron Grainer. Filming locations included the towns of Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Salford, Manchester, Radcliffe and St Anne's-on-sea in the northwest of England. The film belongs to the British New Wave movement in film, and the related genre commonly known as "kitchen sink drama". The novel was later turned into a 1982 television series A Kind of Lovi Victor 'Vic' Brown (Bates) is a draughtsman in a Manchester factory who sleeps with a typist called Ingrid Rothwell (Ritchie) who also works there. She falls for him but ...
The third in the series of Ruth Rendell's ‘Wexford' mysteries. Apart from George Baker as Wexford and Christopher Ravenscourt as his side-kick Inspector Burden, this episode has the last acting role for my dear friend June Ritchie who retired from the business after this film - a sad loss, I felt, as she was a fine actress, so well remembered for her performance in "A Kind of Loving" with Alan Bates. This was a particularly nice part for her ‘swan song' after having played several rather ‘dowdy' roles (two of her other performances are also on my channel: "A Bit of Singing and Dancing" and "December Flower"). The Wexford stories appear never to have been issued on DVD and it seems the only Wexford mysteries that have been are "Simisola", "Harm Done" and "Road Rage" so it's high time for a ...

In a short drama from 1981 June Ritchie (who came to fame in "A Kind of Loving" with Alan Bates) gives a beautifully sensitive performance playing a middle-aged spinster who has spent her life caring for her domineering and overbearing mother, now deceased, leaving her adequately well-off, but insecure. She becomes suspicious of the boarder she's taken in and has difficulty coping with her need for freedom and her suspicions about the man (neatly played by Benjamin Whitrow) which are compounded by the constant appearance in her mind of her mother fuelling her insecurities and suspicions. Evelyn Laye has an unpleasant role to play, but also gives a sensitive interpretation of the imperious and intolerant mother. The denouement is curious and amusing and this delightful drama, taken from a b...

A tender drama from 1985 with Jean Simmons looking as lovely as ever - and giving a wonderful performance as a caring widow meeting her aunt for the first time only to find her in a dreadful state being held a virtual prisoner by her controlling, unpleasant and greedy son, played by Bryan Forbes in his first major acting role since "Guns of Navarone" in 1961, and with June Ritchie portraying an equally unpleasant character as his wife, both who hope to gain from her Will. Support roles are played by Mona Washbourne, Pat Heywood, Richard Warner, Richard Hope, Ann-Marie Gwatkin, Christopher Fulford and Jim Carter (long before "Downton Abbey"!). The quality of this video tape transfer is not good, but the drama makes it worth suffering! Best not to watch it full-screen...

Lasers and bacterial cells - they go together like peanut butter and jelly. Prof. Ken Ritchie, Professor of Physics at Purdue uses lasers to "light up" individual molecules on the surface of cells. By taking pictures and videos of these cells he can study cellular processes that help single cell organisms build their membranes and orient themselves in their environment.
