Oghi

Oghi (Urdu: اوگی‎) is a city and union council (an administrative subdivision) of Mansehra District in the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa of Pakistan. It is located in Oghi Tehsil and lies to the north-west of the district capital Mansehra.

History

During British Rule it was the headquarters of the Agror valley (part of Hazara District) and served as the headquarters of the Hazara border military police. This Valley is green and surrounded by mountains. There is old fort or "Qila" built in 1865 and is currently the headquarters of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) Oghi District.

In British colonial times, Oghi town, in the Agror valley, was the seat of the local chief, the Khan of Agror, of the Swati tribe, descended from one Akhund Saadudin, a mullah who came from the Swat area and settled here. Following the disturbances by The Black Mountain (Tor Ghar) Tribes and campaign of 1888 this chiefdom was formally abolished by the government of British India; and subsequently, the chiefs were given a limited 'Jagir' grant in exile. In the post-independence era, this family has been represented in Pakistani politics by the late Khan Facker uz Zaman Khan, and then his wife Senator Mrs. Fauzia Facker uz Zaman, and their son, Mr. Wajih uz Zaman Khan, Advocate, who is an MP in the Provincial Assembly of Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa.

Oghi (beverage)

Oghi (sometimes oghee, Armenian: օղի òġi; colloquially aragh) is an Armenian spirit distilled from fruits or berries. Oghi, a clear fruit vodka, is the generic Armenian word for vodka of all kinds. It is widely produced as moonshine from home-grown garden fruits all across Armenia, where it is served as a popular welcome drink to guests and is routinely drunk during meals. Arguably, Armenian oghi is not "vodka" at all (see Vodka war) and merely became thought of as such during the Soviet regime in Armenia.

Mulberry oghi is commercially produced and exported under the brand name Artsakh by the Artsakh-Alco Brandy Company in Askeran District in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Varieties

Oghi (tehsil)

Oghi Tehsil is a sub-district (Tehsil) of Mansehra District in the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province of Pakistan. The Tehsil takes its name from the main city of the area, Oghi. The velly is known as "Agror" and comprises many villages. An old fort became the Frontier Constabilary Divisional Headquarters. Oghi is a four way junction leading to Darband shergarh, Dilbori battagram, Battal and Mansehra.

The people in the lower belt speak Hindko while those in the upper belt speak Pashto.

On the southwestern side is the Tanawal valley. New Darband Township and Shergarh are the main town and village of the Tehsil, respectively.

The major caste and language of Tanawal is Tanoli. Saror and Onaar, two small rivers, flow across the Agror and Tanawal valleys.

There are 11 union councils of Oghi.

Environment

Most of the area is arid or rain-fed. About 25% of the people are involved in the agricultural sector. Timber is the main source of fuel.
