--In 2001, Portugal became the first country in the world to end the drug war within its borders, and in the short time since, the country has seen a radical improvement in society. Drugs now have fewer negative effects in Portugal than they did prior to decriminalization. There are now fewer drug-related deaths, fewer children getting ahold of drugs, and fewer people doing drugs in general.
--The drug war is one of the most misunderstood subjects in mainstream political dialogue, even among people who are sympathetic to the plight of responsible drug users. It is rare for someone to come out and say that all drugs should be legal, but this is the only logically consistent stance on the issue. To say that some drugs should be legal while others should not is still giving credence to the punishment paradigm and overlooking the external consequences of drug prohibition — or prohibition of any object, for that matter.

Faced with this epidemic, the government has passed a radical bill decriminalising the use of soft and hard drugs. In mid July it will become law, making possession of up to 10 days supply of heroin no more serious than a parking offence. "Repressive policies haven't worked anywhere in the world", says MP Joao Sobral. The government denies it's going soft on smuggling, but a recent 227 kg haul of pure heroin shows Portugal is a favoured route into the EU. http://www.leap.cc -----Law Enforcement Against Prohibition --In 2001, Portugal became the first country in the world to end the drug war within its borders, and in the short time since, the country has seen a radical improvement in society. Drugs now have fewer negative effects in Portugal than they did prior to decriminalization. There are now fewer drug-related deaths, fewer children getting ahold of drugs, and fewer people doing drugs in general. --The drug war is one of the most misunderstood subjects in mainstream political dialogue, even among people who are sympathetic to the plight of responsible drug users. It is rare for someone to come out and say that all drugs should be legal, but this is the only logically consistent stance on the issue. Drugs now have fewer negative effects in Portugal than they did prior to decriminalization. There are now fewer drug-related deaths, fewer children getting ahold of drugs, and fewer people doing drugs in general.
--The drug war is one of the most misunderstood subjects in mainstream political dialogue, even among people who are sympathetic to the plight of responsible drug users. It is rare for someone to come out and say that all drugs should be legal, but this is the only logically consistent stance on the issue. To say that some drugs should be legal while others should not is still giving credence to the punishment paradigm and overlooking the external consequences of drug prohibition — or prohibition of any object, for that matter.
--What regulating AND controlling ALL illicit drugs would cause.......(this is based merely on the facts and known statistics from what drug laws have resulted in since they were enacted; Also based on the Real World Results of Portugal's decriminalisation of all illicit drugs in July 2001 to present day, and is only getting more and more of these positive results, as more time passes

Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.

Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Museum Of Religious Art is to be found in the former bishop’s palace. The sugar trade with Antwerp meant that paintings and other works of art could be used as payment. Madeira has long been famous for its wine, stored in wooden barrels to mature and then exported all over the world. In the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, matured and celebrated. At the beginning of a valley, São Vicente lies hidden beyond the steep slopes of the northern coastline. The tastefully restored centre of the village contains a seventeenth century church with a Baroque interior. There are gilded carvings, tile pictures and paintings on the altar. At an amazing acute angle, the gondola from the mountain station below the village of Achadas Da Cruz travels three hundred metres down to the coast and back. This most beautiful Baroque church on the north coast was established in São Jorge. Its external simplicity gives little hint of its internal beauty: gilded wood carvings and illusionist paintings adorn the church and its altar. To the east of Madeira is the natural bay of Machico, the oldest settlement on the island. Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Its extraordinary landscapes and exotic fragrances have been captivating visitors for centuries. Madeira, wild beauty amid the Atlantic Ocean!

In Portugal, there are so many different cities and towns that you can choose to go to or buy property from. There are certain things to be considered in buying a property, the weather, best location, can bite your taste and comforts you. In Portugal, they are abundant of that domain.
Like other countries there are rules to be followed in having a property. Here are the some of the basic steps to help you understand the procedures and legal acts that are required in acquiring a property in Portugal:
• The use of government licensed estate agent, for at least they are bonded by State in the form of an Insurance Cover that may be claimed against in the case of proven dispute.
• Buyer may also use the so called "Contrato de Promessa de Compra e Venda" or Promissory Contract detailing the conditions of the Sale. This contract is then legalized by registering it in the Notary Office.
• This contract is legally binding on both sides and the law requires the seller to repay twice the deposit should he withdraw from the sale. Likewise, if the buyer fails to complete, he forfeits the total of his deposit. There are specific laws relating to this act that a lawyer will be able to explain.
• In having a lawyer to represent the buyer in their transaction, he or she needs a document named "Procuração Publica", prepared with the necessary details and then in the Notary Office, this document is signed and registered by the Notary.
• Every buyer is required to obtain a Fiscal Number from the local Tax Office or Finanças.
• Proceeding to act of purchase, the purchase will be subject to a Municipal payment named "IMT - Imposto Municipal sobre Transamissões" which as from the 1st of January 2003 replaces the previous tax payment named "SISA". This payment is paid in the local Tax Office nearest to the property. The amount to be paid is related in terms of percentage by "platforms" to the cost of the property being purchased. In limited cases the buyer will be exempt from paying this tax.

The bulls are not aggressive. These animals are by nature equally or even more friendly than dogs. Fadjen, a mediatic bull, rescued by Christophe Thomas from a Spanish bull breeder, is now an excellent example that the bull aggressiveness, is nothing but a myth, touted by bullfighting people. It is rare for someone to come out and say that all drugs should be legal, but this is the only logically consistent stance on the issue. (2) Improve seller accountability and drug safety
(3) Reduce drug availability to children
(4) Reduce nonviolent prisoner population
(5) Real crime can be dealt with

Fadjen, a mediatic bull, rescued by Christophe Thomas from a Spanish bull breeder, is now an excellent example that the bull aggressiveness, is nothing but a myth, touted by bullfighting people.
Ethology explains that the behavior is not determined by genetics but by environmental and animal interactions. Regardless of genetic traits, animal behavior is always conditioned, ultimately, by the purpose and character of those who create them.
In order to make bulls more responsive, so that they can fight them, the bull breeders create them in an extensive system, with very little contact with humans, subjecting them to harsh training at all levels. The physical ones are worthy of a high competition athlete.
Occasionally, some die suddenly due to excessive effort to which they are subjected.
Sometimes bulls are drugged with "Rompum" and "Calmivet". Two anesthetic substances which administered in small quantities, cause a calming effect, but the "right" dose isn't always well calculated, leading some to die from an overdose, even before entering the arena.
Science has proven a long time ago, that all sentient beings, group of which human beings are part of, have the capacity to experience physical and psychological suffering, such as stress, fear, panic, anxiety and sadness. They suffer psychological trauma and develop depressions too, as well as affections and even build relationships with other beings, including humans.
In the ability to feel, the animals are no different from humans.
The bull is entitled to his physical and psychological integrity, and especially has the right not to be used as a subject of torture, to the delight of a minority that is not even representative of the Portuguese people.
As many other species, the bull may well live in freedom and peacefully in their habitat, even if it's in protected areas, so the preservation argument, as a justification of bullfighting, is not acceptable.
It's not admissible, that in the 21st century, a civilized country like Portugal, may host a tradition that violates 90% of the main points of the UNESCO's Universal Declaration of Animal Rights:
1 - All animals have the same right to live.
2 - All animals are entitled to be respected
and protected by man.
3 - No animal should be mistreated.
4 - All wild animals have the right
to live free in their habitat.
5 - The animal that man chooses for companion,
should never be abandoned.
6 - No animal should be used in
experiments that cause him pain.
7 - Any act which endangers the life of an animal
is a crime against life.
8 - Pollution and environmental destruction
are considered crimes against animals.
9 - Animal rights must be defended by law.
10 - Man must be educated from childhood to observe,
respect and understand animals.
But It isn't just animal rights, the ones violated by bullfighting.
Psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience and others have shown that watching bullfights causes psychological trauma in children, making them tolerant to violence and leading the adults to aggressivity. This was one of the arguments that led to the abolition of bullfighting in Catalonia, in Spain, where tradition was much stronger than in Portugal.
The Portuguese are ashamed of bullfighting!

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and Member of Parliament of Kawhmu constituency in Burma. She was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1991.
Christine Chinkin, FBA, is currently Professor in International Law at the London School of Economics. She has widely published on issues of international human rights law, law, including as co-author of The Boundaries of International Law: A Feminist Analysis.
Nicola Lacey holds a Senior Research Fellowship at All Souls College, and is Professor of Criminal Law and Legal Theory at the University of Oxford, having previously held a chair at the London School of Economics. Nicola's research is in criminal law and criminal justice, with a particular focus on comparative and historical scholarship. In 2011 she won the Hans Sigrist Prize for scholarship on the rule of law in modern societies.
Sir Geoffrey Nice QC is a barrister; he is a signatory of Harvard's Crimes in Burma report. Sir Geoffrey is a member of Burma Justice Committee and works with NGO's and other groups seeking international recognition of crimes committed in conflicts; represents government and similar interests at the ICC.
A Burmese native, Dr Zarni is a veteran founder of the Free Burma Coalition, one of the Internet's first and largest human rights campaigns and a Visiting Fellow at the Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit, LSE. His forthcoming book, provisionally titled Life under the Boot: 50-years of Military Dictatorship in Burma, will be published by Yale University Press.
Mary Kaldor is professor of Global Governance in the Department of International Development and Director of the Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit at LSE. She writes on globalisation, international relations and humanitarian intervention, global civil society and global governance, as well as what she calls New Wars.
