Justinian arose from humble roots, the nephew of an illiterate pig farmer named Justin. Justin joined the army and rose to become leader of the palace guard, then took his nephew under his wing and made sure that he was well educated. When Emperor Anastasius died, Justin used his position (and his standing army inside Constantinople) to claim the crown for himself. His nephew guided the early years of his reign, helping Justin secure support both in the capitol and abroad. When Justin died, rule of the Byzantine Empire passed to the young Justinian, who had grand ambitions to restore its waning glory. It also freed him to marry Theodora, a famous actress who was far beneath his social station, and who would also rise from her humble beginnings to become a revered empress.

Professor Freedman opens by discussing why historians use the writings of Procopius and Gregory of Tours, a sixth century bishop whose history of the Merovingian kings is discussed the following week. Procopius's three works -- The Wars, the adulatory Buildings, and the invective Secret History -- are the best sources on the reign of the Emperor Justinian. Under Justinian and his wife Theodora, the Roman Empire reached its height as it reclaimed territories in North Africa and Europe previously lost to the Vandals, Visigoths and Ostrogoths.. However, defeats in war accompanied by heavy taxation led to civil unrest. In addition to the wars, Justinian commissioned a number of large projects like the building of the Hagia Sophia and the organization of Roman law in the Corpus Iuris Civilis.

Justinian wanted to restore the glory of Rome, but many obstacles stood in his way. He brought on talented advisors to help him reform the tax system, the law code, and the military might of the empire. With them he made great strides, but these advisors had very human flaws. His tax collector, John the Cappadocian, centralized tax collection and crushed corruption in his agents, greatly increasing the revenue to the empire - but he also skimmed money off the top to feed his private corruption. Meanwhile, a lawyer named Tribonian took centuries of confusing and even conflicting legal precedents and resolved them into a single code, the Corpis Juris Civilis, which remains the foundation of modern law today. He even made a textbook for students to learn from. But he was also a practicing pagan during an era when Justinian was trying to crack down on pagan rituals. And last, Justinian's chief military commander Belisarius helped the Empire recover its military glory. He defeated the Sassanid Persians in the Battle of Dara, crushing a force of 50,000 men with only 25,000 of his own through clever strategy: he dug a trench to halt their infantry's advance, then baited the Persian cavalry into overextending and sprang a surprise attack on them with Hun mercenaries. Although Belisarius seems to have been an upstanding person, his personal historian Procopius tainted even his clean record. Procopius wrote glowing official histories of the reign of Justinian, but his long lost secret history depicted Justinian as a literal headless demon and Theodora as a debauched monster.

Corpus Juris Civilis
The Corpus Juris (or Iuris) Civilis ("Body of Civil Law") is the modern name for a collection of fundamental works in jurisprudence, issued from 529 to 534 by order of Justinian I, Eastern Roman Emperor. It is also sometimes referred to as the Code of Justinian, although this name belongs more properly to the part titled Codex Justinianus.
The work as planned had three parts: the Code (Codex) is a compilation, by selection and extraction, of imperial enactments to date; the Digest or Pandects (the Latin title contains both Digesta and Pandectae) is an encyclopedia composed of mostly brief extracts from the writings of Roman jurists; and the Institutes (Institutiones) is a student textbook, mainly introducing the Code, although it has important conceptual elements that are less developed in the Code or the Digest. All three parts, even the textbook, were given force of law. They were intended to be, together, the sole source of law; reference to any other source, including the original texts from which the Code and the Digest had been taken, was forbidden. Nonetheless, Justinian found himself having to enact further laws and today these are counted as a fourth part of the Corpus, the Novellae Constitutiones (Novels, literally New Laws).

Professor Freedman opens by discussing why historians use the writings of Procopius and Gregory of Tours, a sixth century bishop whose history of the Merovingian kings is discussed the following week. Procopius's three works -- The Wars, the adulatory Buildings, and the invective Secret History -- are the best sources on the reign of the Emperor Justinian. Under Justinian and his wife Theodora, the Roman Empire reached its height as it reclaimed territories in North Africa and Europe previously lost to the Vandals, Visigoths and Ostrogoths.. However, defeats in war accompanied by heavy taxation led to civil unrest. In addition to the wars, Justinian commissioned a number of large projects like the building of the Hagia Sophia and the organization of Roman law in the Corpus Iuris Civilis.

Justinian wanted to restore the glory of Rome, but many obstacles stood in his way. He brought on talented advisors to help him reform the tax system, the law code, and the military might of the empire. With them he made great strides, but these advisors had very human flaws. His tax collector, John the Cappadocian, centralized tax collection and crushed corruption in his agents, greatly increasing the revenue to the empire - but he also skimmed money off the top to feed his private corruption. Meanwhile, a lawyer named Tribonian took centuries of confusing and even conflicting legal precedents and resolved them into a single code, the Corpis Juris Civilis, which remains the foundation of modern law today. He even made a textbook for students to learn from. But he was also a practicing pagan during an era when Justinian was trying to crack down on pagan rituals. And last, Justinian's chief military commander Belisarius helped the Empire recover its military glory. He defeated the Sassanid Persians in the Battle of Dara, crushing a force of 50,000 men with only 25,000 of his own through clever strategy: he dug a trench to halt their infantry's advance, then baited the Persian cavalry into overextending and sprang a surprise attack on them with Hun mercenaries. Although Belisarius seems to have been an upstanding person, his personal historian Procopius tainted even his clean record. Procopius wrote glowing official histories of the reign of Justinian, but his long lost secret history depicted Justinian as a literal headless demon and Theodora as a debauched monster.

In der zweiten Staffel der Terra X-Zeitreise taucht der Berliner Archäologe Matthias Wemhoff erneut in die Parallelgeschichte der Zivilisationen der Jahre 500 und 1500 nach Christus ein. Wie groß waren die Gemeinsamkeiten, wie stark die Unterschiede? Durch den parallelen Blick auf weit auseinanderliegende, oft nichts voneinander wissenden Kulturen entsteht ein neues, spannendes Geschichtsbild.
Als in Europa Rom am Boden liegt und die Völkerwandung ihren Lauf nimmt, ist Amerika noch ein ferner, unbekannter Kontinent. Doch was geschieht damals dort oder in Asien oder in Afrika? Gerade im Norden Afrikas überlebt die jahrhundertealte Kultur der Römer: Es sind die als kulturlos verschrienen Vandalen in Tunesien, die sich so römisch geben wie die Römer selbst. Und auch das Oströmische Reich erlebt eine Blütezeit, die noch heute sichtbaren Errungenschaften Kaiser Justinians sind enorm: Matthias Wemhoff entdeckt im modernen Istanbul unterirdische Wasserreservoirs und kilometerlange Aquädukte.

Tausende Kilometer entfernt entstehen zur selben Zeit beeindruckende Monumente anderer Kulturen: In Zentralmexiko errichten Menschen gigantische Pyramiden ohne technische Hilfsmittel. Alles zu Ehren ihrer Götter. Zeitgleich wird 20.000 Kilometer entfernt eine andere Meisterleistung vollbracht, die einen Siegeszug um die Welt antreten sollte: Im Norden Indiens erfinden kluge Köpfe ein hochkomplexes Spiel: Schach. Die Fürsten jener Zeit erproben mit dem Spiel die Strategien ihrer Armeen.
Die Seidenstraße, der wichtigste Handelsweg zwischen den Kontinenten, wird im Jahr 500 zum Schauplatz der ersten Industriespionage. Zwei byzantinische Mönche schmuggeln aus China eines der wertvollsten Güter dieser Zeit: Seidenraupen-Eier. Die Produktion von Seide bedeutet damals Geld, Macht, Einfluss und Fortschritt. Dinge, die im Jahr 500 aber nicht überall auf der Welt den gleichen Stellenwert hatten, wie Matthias Wemhoff in der Region des heutigen Namibia mit eigenen Augen sehen kann. Join me as I continue to roleplay the life of Justinian in Crusader Kings 2! Today, Emperor Justinian converts to Hellenic and begins to restore the truest Roman Empire of all - one with the old Roman faith at the helm! That's right! We're leaving Miyaphysitism and going Hellenic in the WTWSMS mod!
P.S. I think my historical reasoning for this is absolute metagaming. I'm rationalizing that one of the main reasons Justinian leaped into the war to restore the Empire was out of a sense of that Empire being founded in the West and unwilling to lose their homelands. So what would Justinian do if, well, Rome never DID lose its homeland?
Perhaps he'd have focused on his goal of uniting the Empire as a Miyaphisitic one that had no schisms, great or small; then again, the Orthodox faith was far from a congealed, triumphant system of beliefs! If I'm not mistaken in my understanding, Yale professor Paul Freedman is not alone in suggesting that the many doctrinal issues in early Christian theology indicate that the faith is far from having a settled religious code-of-ethics to live by. Certainly Theodora wanted him to achieve what wasn't at the Council of Niceaea and unite the faith! ...Except this Justinian has no Theodora, and instead would either fully embrace Miyaphysitism to the core...
...Or, in a lesssssss likely scenario, turn towards older faiths as he finds uniting the church to be nigh-impossible. Perhaps he discovers that God has been deceiving him this whole time, denying him this love of his life and his 'intended' path through history! He now knows he was but a pawn in a game by Laverna, Goddess of Thieves, but how will he convert his subjects? Let's find out!

Throughout my life I've loved Roman history as sort of a subtle "comparison to America" thing, and these days I feel like we really need a Justinian. I won't lie, I'm also heavily inspired by the Extra Credits team's work on Justinian (and Suleiman).
