The monarch butterfly or simply monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species. Its wings feature an easily recognizable black, orange, and white pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 cm (3½–4 in) The viceroy butterfly is similar in color and pattern, but is markedly smaller and has an extra black stripe across each hind wing.
The eastern North American monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer/autumn migration from the United States and southern Canada to Mexico. During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multi-generational return north. The western North American population of monarchs west of the Rocky Mountains often migrates to sites in California but has been found in overwintering Mexican sites as well. Monarchs were transported to the International Space Station and were bred there.

This is Part 1 of a 5 Part series on how to help Monarch Butterfly eggs reach adulthood. As of 2014, the Eastern and Midwestern Monarchs of North America are doing very poorly, having record low numbers. This series has been made in the hopes of allowing those who wish to take an active role in helping out the Monarch be able to do so. Part 1 shows how to properly identify Common Milkweed, tips for locating Monarch eggs, and how to safely remove the eggs from the plant. Please post comments, questions, and suggestions relating to the video information or your own Monarch Butterfly experiences!
Video showing the complete life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly at our home in Southern California. Original music by Gianni Pascuzzi - Hapi Drum, Hang Drum, Didgeridoo, Tuvan igil, Array Mbira, Waterphone and more. If you'd like to attract monarchs to your garden, plant some varieties of Milkweed. Adult female monarchs lay their eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves. These eggs hatch, depending on temperature, in about 3-4 days. The larvae feed on the plant leaves for about two weeks and develop into caterpillars about 2 inches long. The caterpillars attach themselves head down to a convenient twig, they shed their outer skin and begin the transformation into a pupa (or chrysalis), a process which is completed in a matter of hours. The pupa resembles a waxy, jade vase and becomes...
Monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus, emerging time lapse. I think this his is a male butterfly emerging but some experts say it's female yet others say it's male. I've been advised that it's male because you can see the scent gland on its wing. A signal that the butterfly is about to emerge is when the pupa case clears to reveal the butterfly within. The butterfly soon emerges and usually hanging in to the pupa skin. The newly emerged butterfly pumps its wings to make them expand. It takes several hours before the wings expand and dry. Habitat loss and the destruction of native plants have been responsible for the rapid decline of the monarch butterfly, the most recognized butterfly in North America. To help protect these majestic insects as they migrate, citizens in the U.S. are resorting to a simple yet powerful tool: gardening. Gardens full of milkweed and nectar plants can serve both as rest stops for adult monarchs and as nurseries for their eggs. Garden Vlog, Raising Monarch Butterflies. Whew, it's a long vlog today!!! Hey guys! Just a peek into what's happening in the garden and our hobby of raising monarch butterflies. It all started with one tropical milkweed plant in our garden, we noticed the monarchs loved it and we loved them, so we planted more. Before we knew it there were tons of caterpillars everywhere... but we were running out of milkweed and it's the only plant they eat. So while we're waiting for our milkweed regrowth and planting more, we started bringing the hungry caterpillars inside and going out on milkweed runs to find more around the island. When you bring in other milkweed that you didn't grow, just make sure it wasn't sprayed with chemicals. One sign of good safe milkweed, is if there are other fat healthy c...

The epic migration of monarch butterflies across North America. This wondrous annual migration, which scientists are just beginning to fathom, is an endangered phenomenon that could dwindle to insignificance if the giant firs that the butterflies cling to during the winter disappear.

http://www.ibiology.org/ibioseminars/steven-m-reppert-part-1.html Talk Overview: Reppert begins by describing the amazing long-distance migration of the Eastern North American Monarch butterfly. Each fall, several hundred million Monarchs fly up to 2500 miles from the eastern United States and southern Canada to a specific over-wintering area in central Mexico. How do the butterflies know when and where to fly? Reppert explains that the migration is directed largely by an innate sun compass. In Part 2, Reppert focuses on the time-compensated sun compass system that guides the Monarch’s long migration. He describes how the butterfly eye can sense skylight cues used for directionality, including polarized UV light. This information is integrated in the central complex of the brain, which s...
