this video is made up of 3 separate hunts. One 3 hour hunt on my local haunt produces my first silver of 2015. The following 2 hunts are in the west lancashire area,each 6 hours long ,are club digs on land that is full of history , the finds recovered from there over the last few weeks would back that up.
2 firsts for me one of which is on my top 10 wish list and the other had me confused all the way home and then some.
the star of the show was john who we almost lost to the muddy conditions , so funny john watching you try to dig your own feet out of the swamp..lol

Background
Charles the Bold, the last Duke of Burgundy had been killed at the Battle of Nancy on January 5, 1477. King Louis XI immediately adjudicated his territories to be recovered fiefs of the French kingdom and campaigned in the counties of Artois, Flanders, Hainaut and the Duchy of Burgundy. Nevertheless Charles' only heir, Mary of Burgundy on August 19, 1477 had married Archduke Maximilian, who, determined to come into the Burgundian inheritance, concentrated troops in the former Burgundian Netherlands and marched against the French army.
Many of the troops that had been victorious at the Battle of Nancy had been provided by the Lower League. Among these troops was a sizable contingent of Swiss soldiers that had been a part of the victorious army of Lorraine, and the salient characteristic of this contingent was their method of fighting. Formed up in pike squares, Swiss mercenaries made themselves and their method of warfare felt far beyond their borders.[1] The notable characteristic of the pike squares is the difficulty with which the traditional cavalry of the day had in penetrating it.
The failure at Nancy, and its reasons, had not escaped Jacques of Savoy, Count of Romont. who had fought under the Archduke's father-in-law Charles at the battle of Nancy. He was now fighting with the Archduke, and he urged him to adopt a similar method of fighting[1] with his 11,000 foot troops.

Both sides met at the village of Guinegatte in the County of Artois, and armies gathered into formation. The cavalry was stationed on the flanks, and the infantry was positioned in the center.[1] However, besides this the two sides diverged significantly in the character of their armies.

The French, whose infantry consisted primarily of marksmen, was positioned in the center of their cavalry

The Archduke was employing Burgundians in his army, and had formed his infantry into two deep, large squares. One of these was commanded by the Count Engelbert of Nassau, who had also fought under the Archduke's father-in-law at Nancy. The other square was commanded by the Count of Romont.[1] These large, deep squares were not to be the only innovation employed in the Archduke's army. The Archduke himself, instead of joining the cavalry arm as was the tradition of the time, joined the infantry square with 200 of his nobles. While it was not unheard of for some poorer nobles to do this, the fact that such a prominent official as the Archduke himself doing this was unheard of. These nobles were positioned in the first ranks of the squares

Charles the Bold (or Charles the Rash) (Dutch: Karel de Stoute, French: Charles le Téméraire or Charles le Hardi) (10 November 1433 – 5 January 1477), baptised Charles Martin, was Duke of Burgundy from 1467 to 1477. Known as Charles the Terrible to his enemies, he was the last Valois Duke of Burgundy and his early death was a pivotal, if under-recognised, moment in European history.
After his death, his domains began an inevitable slide towards division between France and the Habsburgs (who through marriage to his heiress Mary became his heirs). Neither side was satisfied with the results and the disintegration of the Burgundian state was a factor in most major wars in Western Europe for more than two centuries.
Charles the Bold was born in Dijon, the son of Philip the Good and Isabella of Portugal. In his father's lifetime (1433–1467) he bore the title of Count of Charolais; afterwards, he assumed all of his father's titles, including that of "Grand Duke of the West". He was also made a Knight of the Golden Fleece just twenty days after his birth, being invested by Charles I, Count of Nevers and the seigneur de Croÿ.

Bern's Historical Museum is hosting a special exhibition on Charles the Bold and Burgundian life during his time. For ten days the museum's grounds are being transformed into a medieval encampment, where doctors have there own ways of curing people and knights risk their lives in jousting tournaments.

this video is made up of 3 separate hunts. One 3 hour hunt on my local haunt produces my first silver of 2015. The following 2 hunts are in the west lancashire area,each 6 hours long ,are club digs on land that is full of history , the finds recovered from there over the last few weeks would back that up.
2 firsts for me one of which is on my top 10 wish list and the other had me confused all the way home and then some.
the star of the show was john who we almost lost to the muddy conditions , so funny john watching you try to dig your own feet out of the swamp..lol

Background
Charles the Bold, the last Duke of Burgundy had been killed at the Battle of Nancy on January 5, 1477. King Louis XI immediately adjudicated his territories to be recovered fiefs of the French kingdom and campaigned in the counties of Artois, Flanders, Hainaut and the Duchy of Burgundy. Nevertheless Charles' only heir, Mary of Burgundy on August 19, 1477 had married Archduke Maximilian, who, determined to come into the Burgundian inheritance, concentrated troops in the former Burgundian Netherlands and marched against the French army.
Many of the troops that had been victorious at the Battle of Nancy had been provided by the Lower League. Among these troops was a sizable contingent of Swiss soldiers that had been a part of the victorious army of Lorraine, and the salient characteristic of this contingent was their method of fighting. Formed up in pike squares, Swiss mercenaries made themselves and their method of warfare felt far beyond their borders.[1] The notable characteristic of the pike squares is the difficulty with which the traditional cavalry of the day had in penetrating it.
The failure at Nancy, and its reasons, had not escaped Jacques of Savoy, Count of Romont. who had fought under the Archduke's father-in-law Charles at the battle of Nancy. He was now fighting with the Archduke, and he urged him to adopt a similar method of fighting[1] with his 11,000 foot troops.

Both sides met at the village of Guinegatte in the County of Artois, and armies gathered into formation. The cavalry was stationed on the flanks, and the infantry was positioned in the center.[1] However, besides this the two sides diverged significantly in the character of their armies.

The Archduke was employing Burgundians in his army, and had formed his infantry into two deep, large squares. One of these was commanded by the Count Engelbert of Nassau, who had also fought under the Archduke's father-in-law at Nancy. The other square was commanded by the Count of Romont.[1] These large, deep squares were not to be the only innovation employed in the Archduke's army. The Archduke himself, instead of joining the cavalry arm as was the tradition of the time, joined the infantry square with 200 of his nobles. While it was not unheard of for some poorer nobles to do this, the fact that such a prominent official as the Archduke himself doing this was unheard of. These nobles were positioned in the first ranks of the squares
