The Territory of Papua comprised the southeastern quarter of the island of New Guinea from 1883 to 1975. In 1883, the Government of Queensland annexed this territory for the British Empire. The United Kingdom Government refused to ratify the annexation but in 1884 a Protectorate was proclaimed over the territory, then called "British New Guinea". There is a certain ambiguity about the exact date on which the entire territory was annexed by the British. The Papua Act 1905 recites that this happened "on or about" 4 September 1888. On 18 March 1902, the Territory was placed under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia. Resolutions of acceptance were passed by the Commonwealth Parliament, who accepted the territory under the name of Papua.
In 1949, the Territory and the Territory of New Guinea were established in an administrative union by the name of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. That administrative union was renamed as Papua New Guinea in 1971. Notwithstanding that it was part of an administrative union, the Territory of Papua at all times retained a distinct legal status and identity; it was a Possession of the Crown whereas the Territory of New Guinea was initially a League of Nations mandate territory and subsequently a United Nations trust territory. This important legal and political distinction remained until the advent of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea in 1975.

A solution to the West Papua territory struggle, to be liberated from mainland Indonesia, is more complex than meets the eye. This according to former United States, Africa and East Asia diplomat, and commentator, Brooks Spector. The SABC spoke to him exclusively. He lamented the what he called, the silence of the world on atrocities that are perpetrated by Indonesia on his people. Mmusi Mogotlane spoke exclusively to the former diplomat earlier, and began by asking him to define the process that ceded West Papua to Indonesia, and if it can be nullified. All around the planet, we find human groups that have lived apart from what we consider civilization and that little by little are loosing their old customs and beliefs to integrate in a more globalised world. Only time will tell if those cultures, than in only three generations have gone from stone tools to mobile phones, will survive and transmit their cultural heritage to their descendents. Tower of Babel will present different ethnic groups that have embarked without knowing in a no return journey toward the future. What are the dangers those cultures will face? What will happen to their languages? And with their Gods? Where lays the hope to keep their identities? Who will keep the spirit of their ancestors alive? THE TOWER OF BABEL. The Aswat Tribe is among the best-known tribes of West Papua (Irian Jaya). They became famous not only for their headhunting practices but also for their unique woodcarving skills. Around 70,000 Asmat live scattered in 100 villages in a territory of roughly 20,000 sq.km in the huge southern Papuan swampy lowlands and rainforest. The Asmat were largely untouched by the outside world until the 1950s and 1960s when missionaries and expeditions increasingly intruded into their isolation. To the Asmat tribe, woodcarving was inextricably connected to the spirit world. Much of the highly original Asmat art is symbolic of warfare, headhunting, and warrior-ancestor veneration. The Asmat were preoccupied with the necessity of appeasing ancestral spirits. In trying to placate this spirit world, ...

William B. Gill, an Anglican priest with a mission in Bosinai, Papas New Guinea, observed craft-like UFOs -- one with Humanoid figures on top -- on two consecutive evenings, June 26-27, 1959. About twenty-five natives, including teachers and medical technicians, also observed the phenomena. They "signaled" the humanoids and received an apparent response. This was one of sixty UFO sightings within a few weeks in the New Guinea area. In 1959 Papua New Guinea was still a territory of Australia. June of that year saw the spectacular ufo sightings by Father William Gill, an Australian Anglican missionary, and 37 members of his Boianai mission. Gill made notes about the experience, which the media obtained. Stories appeared in August, causing a sensation. http://www.probeufoparanormal.com/ htt...

Francesco and I visited parts of the Yali Territory in the Highlands of West Papua. At the end of the tour a flight, on a missionary Cessna 206 plane, brought us from the village of Panggema back to Wamena the only town in the Baliem Valley. The most wonderful experience of that trip was the contact with the Yali People and specially the many beautiful kids and their smile. Taking off from Panggema on a rough grass landing strip also was an unforgettable emotion!
The western half of the island of New Guinea has been known by many names including Netherlands New Guinea, West Papua, Irian Jaya and Papua. It is an extraordinary place where snow-capped mountains drain into massive rivers and 250 languages are spoken. Yet, despite its wild beauty and rich culture, it remains strangely forgotten. Narrated by Rachel Griffiths, Land of the Morning Star reveals the turbulent history of a troubled country, swept up in the power play of international politics. For centuries, the world has jostled for control of this rugged, isolated region, with its abundant natural resources and strategic position. First outside contact was with the Muslims of Malacca, who came in search of slaves and the prized feathers of birds of paradise. They were followed by Europea...
