His Holiness Vazgen I, born Levon Garabed Baljian, was the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church between 1955 and 1994.
Vazgen was born in Bucharest to a family belonging to the Armenian-Romanian community. The young Levon Baljian did not initially pursue the Church as a profession, instead graduating from the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. After graduation, he became a philosopher and published a series of scholarly articles, was the editor and publisher of the scientific-popular journal "Herk".
In 1929-1943 he taught at Bucharest Armenian schools.
As his interests began to shift from philosophy to theology, Baljian studied Armenian Apostolic Theology and Divinity in Athens, Greece. He eventually gained the title of vardapet, an ecclesiastical rank for learned preachers and teachers in the Armenian Apostolic Church roughly equivalent to receiving a doctorate in theology. In the 1940s, he became a bishop, and then the arajnord (leader) of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Romania. His rise through the hierarchy of the Church culminated in 1955 when he was elected Catholicos, becoming one of the youngest Catholicoi in the history of the Armenian Apostolic Church. He would reign until his death in 1994. During his long time as Catholicos, he managed to assert some independence for his church in face of the totalitarian Soviet rule in the Armenian SSR, and lived to see religious freedom restored under Armenia's national government in 1991.
He is the author of a number of studies in the field of Armenology. For his merits in the area the establishment of peace he was awarded Gold Medal after Joliot Curie, numerous diplomas and orders.

Родился 3 октября 1908 года в Бухаресте. Учился в колледже "Мисакян-Кесимян", Бухарестском высшем торговом училище (1924-26гг.).. В 1936г. завершил факультет литературы и философии Бухарестского государственного университета, в 1937 там же - отделение педагогики. Сотрудничал в прессе, издавал журнал "Герк" ("Пашня"). С 1929 по 1943гг. работал учителем в армянских школах Бухареста. В 1942-1944гг. - член Комитета помощи советским военнопленным в лагерях Румынии.
В 1943 году - крутой поворот в судьбе. Учитывая пожелания Совета Румынской епархии Армянской церкви, а также образовавшуюся вакансию должности руководителя, Палчян принимает монашество и 28 ноября служит свой первый молебен, затем становится предводителем Румынской епархии, а с 1954г. и Болгарской.
В 1955 году 125 голосами из 137 избирается 130-м Католикосом всех армян.

His Holiness Vazgen I (also Vasken I, Armenian: Վազգեն Ա, born Levon Garabed Baljian; September 20, 1908–August 18, 1994) was the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church between 1955 and 1994, in one of the longest reigns of the Armenian Catholicoi. A native of Romania, he began his career as a philosopher, before becoming a Doctor of Theology and a member of the local Armenian clergy. The leader of the Armenian Apostolic Church hierarchy in Romania, he became Catholicos during the 1950s, moving to the Soviet Union and residing in the Armenian SSR. Vazgen I led the Armenian Church during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and was the first Catholicos in newly-independent Armenia.
Vazgen was born in Bucharest to a family belonging to the Armenian-Romanian community. His father was a shoemaker and his mother was a schoolteacher. The young Levon Baljian did not initially pursue the Church as a profession, instead graduating from the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. After graduation, he became a philosopher and published a series of scholarly articles.

Родился 3 октября 1908 года в Бухаресте. Учился в колледже "Мисакян-Кесимян", Бухарестском высшем торговом училище (1924-26гг.).. В 1936г. завершил факультет литературы и философии Бухарестского государственного университета, в 1937 там же - отделение педагогики. Сотрудничал в прессе, издавал журнал "Герк" ("Пашня"). С 1929 по 1943гг. работал учителем в армянских школах Бухареста. В 1942-1944гг. - член Комитета помощи советским военнопленным в лагерях Румынии.
В 1943 году - крутой поворот в судьбе. Учитывая пожелания Совета Румынской епархии Армянской церкви, а также образовавшуюся вакансию должности руководителя, Палчян принимает монашество и 28 ноября служит свой первый молебен, затем становится предводителем Румынской епархии, а с 1954г. и Болгарской.
В 1955 году 125 голосами из 137 избирается 130-м Католикосом всех армян.

The Rosetta probe will be crash-landed on Comet 67P on Friday 30 September, the European Space Agency has confirmed. The manoeuvre, which is expected to destroy the satellite, will bring to an end two years of investigations at the 4km-wide icy dirt-ball. Flight controllers plan to have the cameras taking and relaying pictures during the final descent. Sensors that "sniff" the chemical environment will also be switched on ... @BBCAmos. ....
