The BRUTAL Executions Of Stalin's Great Purge
Inside of the Soviet Union, there were many purges organised by Stalin and the NKVD in which hundreds of thousands of the population were executed and killed. The Great Purge is remembered as Stalin's bloodiest purge in which he and Nickolai Yezhov, (The Chief of the NKVD) put down anyone who dared to dissent against the leadership. The Great Purge affected everyone, and in particular hit the leadership of the Communist Party very hard. The Great Purge - One Minute History
The assassination of party official Sergei Kirov sets off an internal investigation that reveals a conspiracy to murder Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. Stalin authorizes the NKVD to identify ‘counter-revolutionaries’ and ‘enemies of the people’ for prosecution. Imprisonment, torture, violent interrogation and execution serve as tools of the party apparatus in an unprecedented act of political repression. The Great Purge has begun. Government officials, Red Army officers, intelligentsia and peasants are accused, rounded up, and quickly executed or sent to the Gulag. Four years later, Stalin brings an end to this campaign of terror and the NKVD leaders who carried out his orders are sentenced to death. Whether driven by genuine fear or ruthless ambition, Stalin exploited the Great Purge t...

Stalin’s Purge of the Red Army and Its Effects on the WW2 Eastern Front
Did the Purge have a massive impact on the Red Army's ability to fight WW2? Historians continue to argue, and the answer may not be as clear cut as previously thought.

The BRUTAL Execution Of Nikolay Yezhov - Stalin's Great Purger
Inside of Joseph's Stalin's Soviet Union, the NKVD were a notorious secret police who were responsible for the executions and deaths of hundreds of thousands. One of the most shocking events in Stalin's time as the leader, was the Great Purge in which its estimated between 700,000 to 1,100,000 people were executed. The man who organised the NKVD to carry out this purge was its Chief, Nikolay Yezhov. He had risen from humble beginnings, to become the most feared person inside of the Soviet Union behind Stalin himself.
Yezhov was responsible for the imprisonment in the Gulags of hundreds of thousands, and also it was his police force that instilled horrific torture of the Soviet people who were suspected of dissenting against Stalin and the Communist Party. Anyone who was accused of speaki...

This episode covers the Stalin's purges in the wake of Sergei Kirov's murder which swept the USSR over the course of 1936-1938 which saw loads of people either shot or sent to the Gulag. It's also a ridiculous 210-day focus.
Recommended Reading/ Sources:
The Stalinist Era by David L. Hoffman. This is a pretty new book and as far as broad overviews go it's certainly one of the best. Some things it can be a bit brief on (Gulags being one of them) but in terms of broad trends and politics it's extremely good.
Scorched Earth: Stalin's Reign of Terror by Jörg Baberowski. A very in-depth look into the purges and the motivations behind the terror. Does well to demonstrate how it also affected normal everyday people and not just the politicians at the top.
Also, anything by Sheila Fitzpatrick is also recommended (On Stalin's Team is a good one).

A Comprehensive Documentary on Joseph Stalin's Brutal Regime, Mass Killings, and Ambition to Create a Communist Utopia in the Soviet Union
00:00 🇷🇺 Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, is celebrated as a hero but is actually one of the greatest criminals in history.
8:41 🌍 Stalin's ambition to create a communist utopia in the Soviet Union is met with challenges and a deteriorating quality of life for the population.

25:02 😢 Stalin's famine in Ukraine leads to the death of millions of people, while the French delegation is deceived by propaganda.
33:08 😱 The construction of the Stalin Canal was a tragic and cruel event, resulting in the deaths of thousands of prisoners and ultimately being a failure.
41:38 ⚡ The Great Terror: Stalin's purges and executions
50:02 😔 Stalin fails to recognize the threat of Hitler and the Soviet Union is unprepared for war.
59:46 🇷🇺 Stalin's leadership during World War II, including the Battle of Stalingrad, solidified the Soviet Union as a superpower.
1:10:23 🇷🇺 Stalin celebrates victory in Berlin and demands half of Europe at the Potsdam Conference.
1:18:55 🌍 The people of Grigny wish a happy birthday to Stalin and praise his leadership.
Through the most significant events of his time, we discover the legacy of terror and destruction that Stalin bequeathed to his people.
On March 9, 1953, Joseph Stalin died in Moscow. His funeral was that of a demigod. Last irony of one of the worst criminals in the history of the 20th century, who brought misery to his people while creating a collective admiration. During more than 30 years of absolute rule, millions of people died.
With Stalin's policy the standard of living fell. The poverty of the early 1930s was evident on the streets of Moscow. In his labor re-education camps, better known as the Gulag, he imprisoned 18 million Russians, turning them into slaves. Machiavellian and paranoid, Stalin invented the impeachment trial, where sentences were set before the start of the hearing. He starved 7,000,000 peasants to death as punishment for refusing his revolution. He had fooled the entire world through false propaganda campaigns.
During World War II, Adolf Hitler set out to destroy Stalin. On June 16, 1941, three million soldiers attacked the USSR. The Nazis took over the city of Stalingrad, which was finally liberated by Russian troops in November 1942. In February 1943 the German troops surrendered. With this victory, Stalin became the first leader to defeat Hitler, which gave him the recognition of the international community.

The Great Purge was a time of great torture too, with large amounts of the population being brutally tortured for information.
As mentioned, the Great Purge resulted in the deaths of over 1 million people, and thousands more were sent to the Gulags, the horrific concentration labour camps set up in the Soviet Union. Stalin eventually got what he wanted, and he had the population of the Soviet Union loyal to him and his government. However it was an incredibly bloody and barbaric time to be living inside of Stalin's dictatorship.

Whether driven by genuine fear or ruthless ambition, Stalin exploited the Great Purge to legally consolidate his power at the cost of nearly 700,000 lives.

After Joseph Stalin declared himself dictator in 1929, he began his Great Purge of former allies, Bolshevik enemies, or anyone perceived as a threat to Stalin's power. Ultimately, the Great Purge extended into genocide of peasants, ethnic minorities and even children.

Today's Daily Dose short history film covers The Great Purge of Russia, when dictator Joseph Stalin executed suspected dissents in the Communist Party. The filmmaker has included the original voice over script to further assist your understanding:
Today on The Daily Dose, The Great Purge.
After Bolshevik Revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin died in 1924, Joseph Stalin declared himself dictator in 1929, despite widespread scrutiny by Bolshevik party members who challenged his authority and right to rule. Combined with the rise of Nazi power in Germany and expanding military aggression by Japan, a paranoid Joseph Stalin set out on a course to purge his perceived Bolshevik enemies in what he professed to be a legitimate effort to unite and strengthen the USSR.
The Great Purge or the Great Terror, as it was known, began in 1934 with the murder of Stalin’s closest ally, Sergei Kirov, who was assassinated at Communist Party headquarters by a man named Leonid Nikolayev, who many believe was sent by Stalin to carry out the murder. Claiming he had uncovered a dangerous anti-Stalinist conspiracy against his rule, Stalin began the systematic murder or imprisonment of suspected party dissenters, eventually eliminating all of the original Bolsheviks who had participated in Lenin’s Russian Revolution of 1917.
During the Great Purge of 1936 to 1938, a veritable conga line of show trials known as the Moscow Trials were undertaken, which effectively purged Stalin’s political enemies and critics in what Stalin called “the fifth column” or “enemy of the people.” Most of his perceived “saboteurs” were executed after their mock trials, nearly all of them confessing to anti-Stalinist sentiment following merciless sessions of interrogation, threats and torture.
After killing off or imprisoning Bolshevik party members, political officials and members of the military, Stalin expanded his genocidal cleansing to include peasants, ethnic minorities, artists, scientists, intellectuals and ordinary citizens. He also signed a decree that made family-members liable for the treasonous crimes of husbands and fathers, leading to the mass execution of children as young as twelve. By the end of Stalin’s purge, about one-third of all Communist Party members were executed, leading to the death of an estimated 750,000 to 950,000 Russians, although some historians place the death toll much higher, since many accused dissidents died of exhaustion, disease or starvation in prison camps known as gulags, making Joseph Stalin one of the leading mass murderers in human history.
And there you have it, the Great Purge of Mother Russia, today on The Daily Dose.

Anyone who was accused of speaking against Stalin's leadership was treated terribly, being sacked from their jobs, tortured and even executed by firing squads. It was Yezhov who was responsible for the mass murder of over 1 million people, but like many inside of Stalin's government, he too fell from grace incredibly sharply. Stalin realised how powerful he was, and he began to prefer Lavrentiy Beria's efficiency with leading the NKVD, and Beria and Stalin plotted Yezhov's downfall.
He was accused of being an enemy of the people, and Yezhov admitted a number of charges under torture. He was eventually sentenced to death, but his execution was carried out in utmost secrecy. It's believed that deadly executioner Vasily Blohkin shot Yezhov in a tiny execution cell inside an NKVD station in Moscow. After his death, Stalin sought to erase him from history, and he became known as the 'vanishing commissar.'
