Yorgos Lanthimos

Yorgos Lanthimos (Greek: Γιώργος Λάνθιμος; born 27 May 1973) is a Greek filmmaker and theatre director.

Life and career

Lanthimos was born in Athens. He studied directing for Film and Television at Hellenic Cinema and Television School Stavrakos in Athens. Through the 90's he directed a series of videos for Greek dance-theater companies. Since 1995 he has directed a large number of TV commercials, in addition to music videos, short films and experimental theater plays. He has also been a member of the creative team which designed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

His feature film career started with the mainstream film My Best Friend where he shared directing credits with mentor Lakis Lazopoulos and was followed by the experimental film Kinetta which premiered at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. His third feature film Dogtooth won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. His fourth feature film Alps (2011) won the Osella Award for Best Screenplay (Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou) at the 68th Venice International Film Festival.

Film festival

A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.

Art director

Art director is the title for a variety of similar job functions in theater, advertising, marketing, publishing, fashion, film and television, the Internet, and video games.

it is the charge of a sole art director to supervise and unify the vision. In particular, the art director is in charge of the overall visual appearance and how it communicates visually, stimulates moods, contrasts features, and psychologically appeals to a target audience. The art director makes decisions about visual elements used, what artistic style to use, and when to use motion.

One of the most difficult problems that art directors face is to translate desired moods, messages, concepts, and underdeveloped ideas into imagery. During the brainstorming process, art directors, co-workers, and clients are engaged in imagining what the finished piece or scene might look like. At times, an art director is ultimately responsible for solidifying the vision of the collective imagination while resolving conflicting agenda and inconsistencies between the various individual inputs.

Unit production manager

A unit production manager (UPM) is the Directors Guild of America–approved title for the top below-the-line staff position responsible for the administration of a feature film or TV production. Alternate titles for this role on non-DGA signatory productions are production manager or production supervisor. He or she works closely with the project's line producer. It is not uncommon for the line producer to function as UPM as well.

A senior producer may assign a UPM to work concurrently on more than one production, for film, theatre, or television.

Responsibility to a senior producer

A UPM is usually hired by a film producer or television producer, and is responsible for managing the production and regulating the costs of delivering the expected film or television show on budget at the end of principal photography. Based on a shooting script, the UPM will create a working budget during pre-production, prior to the start of principal photography, thereby charting a recommended budgetary course. Typically, a Producer will oversee all the cost-related decisions, including above-the-line expenditures (especially during pre-production). However, the UPM is responsible for the more detailed planning and execution of the below-the-line costs (primarily for physical production). The film's director will select important department heads (keys) or support personnel related to his work, including the casting director, cinematographer, costume designer, production designer, and film editor. For below-the-line matters, the UPM often negotiates deals (for location, equipment, etc.) and hires the remaining crew, typically on the recommendation of the keys and/or based on prior experience with trusted individuals.

Ο Γιώργος Μαυροψαρίδης αποφοίτησε από το Θεατρικό Εργαστήρι (Αθήνα 1975) και από το London Film School (1978) Εχει βραβευτεί για το μοντάζ των ταινιών: Σκιάχτρα (1984), Πολίτικη κουζίνα (2003), Κυνοδοντας (2009), Ο εχθρός μου (2013). Αυτό το διάστημα μοντάρει την ταινία Lobster του Γιώργου Λάνθιμου. Το Film Factory, ξεκίνησε τον Δεκέμβριο του 2012, σε συνεργασία με την ΑνώτατηΣχολή Καλών Τεχνών, ως μια σειρά εκπαιδευτικών εργαστηρίων και σεμιναρίων, τα οποία παραδίδουν αφιλοκερδώς, οι βραβευμένοι από την ΕΑΚ κινηματογραφιστές κάθε έτους, ο καθένας στον τομέα του. Είναι ανοιχτά στο κοινό και αφορούν σε όλες τις ειδικότητες της κινηματογραφικής Τέχνης. Ακολουθώντας την αυξανόμενη επιτυχία και αποδοχή από το κοινό, το Film Factory είναι πλέον εμπλουτισμένο με μια σειρά περιφερειακών εκδηλώσεων, όπως εικαστικές εκθέσεις, συναυλίες, προβολές ταινιών και αφιερώματα. Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s latest Palme d’Or-winning movie “Kış Uykusu” (Winter Sleep) swept the board at the 47th Turkish Cinema Writers Association (SİYAD) awards, presented at Istanbul’s Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall on March 11. “Winter Sleep” won six prizes overall including Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor (Haluk Bilginer), Best Actress (Melisa Sözen), Best Supporting Actor (Ayberk Pekcan) and Best Photography (Gökhan Tiryaki). The Labor award was presented to festival director and filmmaker İrfan Demirkol. “Two Days, One Night” by the brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne was selected as the Best Foreign Film of 2014. Speaking at the ceremony, SİYAD President Melis Behlil said the award winners were determined by the votes of the association’s 94 members this year. Deniz Akçay won Best Script for “Köksüz” (Rootless) and Lale Başar won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the same film. Kenan Doğulu won Best Soundtrack for “Unutursam Fısılda” (Whisper if I Forget) and Soydan Kuş won the Best Art Director for the same film. Yorgos Mavropsaridis won Best Screenplay for “Sivas, Güliz Sağlam won Best Documentary for “Tepecik Hayal Okulu” (A Dream School in the Steppes), and the Best Short Film award was given to “Müjdeler Var Yurdumun Toprağına Taşına, Erdi Sinemam 100 Şeref Yaşına” (We Bear Good News for Our Beloved Country, Our Cinema is Celebrating its 100th Anniversary.
