I mean how many people order and use taxis every single day but never thought to invent something like Uber? We all see the same things but successful people see them in a different way. Unsuccessful people see things “as they are” and they put a special emphasis on the negative aspects. Successful people see things “as what they can be” and they put a special emphasis on the positive aspects. This is what I refer to as “The Green Glasses”. Here’s 4 Actionable Steps To See The World Through The Green Glasses: 1). Listen Now I know this sounds basic but bare with me for a second… In order to spot opportunity you must first listen, it’s amazing how many people don’t do this especially in todays noisy world. Listen to your friends and colleagues and hear their concerns, voices and opinions on life and the mundane. Problems in life cause pain, pain causes vocal complaint and it’s amazing how often vocal complaint gets brushed off as “oh yea me too” or “oh that sucks”. You’d be amazed how many billion dollar companies were started simply by listening to another persons complaint, instead of being the “oh yea me too guy” take it in and think about it. 2). Ask Why & Go 4-5 Layers Deep Opportunity is never hiding at surface level, it’s always four or five layers deep and part of wearing the green glasses is to ask why enough times to uncover the opportunity hiding below. 3). See Things Not “As They Are” but “As What They Can Be”. Remember how I said that successful people see things not “as they are” but as “what they can be”. This is step three of seeing the world through the green glasses. When you hear somebody else’s problems, encounter them yourself or find yourself in a situation less than satisfactory there is hidden upside. Think about situations and problems not as “what they are” but as “what they can be”. 4). Believe In Your Own Ability To Influence & Change The World When you discover opportunity chances are you’re far from ready. Your mind will tell you that you’re not good enough, you don’t have the right skills, the timing is wrong and every other excuse under the sun.
