Melton Mozart was a partnership project with LeicesterShire
Music Education Hub, Orchestras
Live and
Sinfonia Viva, supported by LeicesterShire Schools
Music Service and
Leicestershire County Council, and inspired by the
BBC Ten Pieces scheme.
A project was developed which ultimately involved workshops in three mainstream school settings (Brownlow, Sherard and
St. Francis’
Primary Schools) and
Birch Wood School, an
SEN specialist. Each of the groups took Mozart’s 4th
Horn Concerto as the starting
point for a project which combined new and old instruments and techniques to create new original pieces of music.
The project was led by three Viva workshop leaders,
Natasha Zielazinski,
Detta Danford and Jo
Wills, and involved teams of Viva musicians working together to support the development of the new material. The project began with a performance of the horn concerto by horn player
David Tollington and a string quartet, and culminated in two performances by the participants – a small scale performance at
De Montfort Hall for LeicesterShire Music Education Hub, followed by a full ensemble performance at
St. Mary’s Church in
Melton Mowbray, led by conductor
David Lawrence. The performances included new material written by the participants, Mozart’s 4th Horn Concerto and a new version of the concerto including a scratch DJ.
Melton Mozart was generously supported by Leicestershire County Council, Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service, Leicester-Shire Music Education Hub, Orchestras Live, Brownlow
Primary School, Sherard Primary School,
St Francis Primary School,
Birchwood School, and
John Ferneley College. Sinfonia Viva is supported using public funding by the
National Lottery through
Arts Council England.
