This was one of the coolest places we have ever been. We visited the Cayman Turtle Farm, an attraction we highly recommend. We were able to have an amazing time looking at and holding turtles, swimming with turtles, looking at alligators and sharks, feeding birds, sliding down a fun water slide, and we even saw a variety of wild lizards! This internationally renowned research and conservation center for sea turtles was a memorable part of our trip. The reason you only see some of us for most of this experience and Zac just does a couple activities is because we were at the doctor for his eye most of the day. My kids went with their grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins so they could still participate in this excursion.

OUR STORY:
The research team around Christine Figgener, in collaboration with Dr. Nathan J. Robinson, found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during a in-water research trip in Costa Rica.
He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril.
After initially thinking that we are looking at a parasitic worm, and trying to remove it to identify it, we cut a small piece of to investigate further and finally identified what we were REALLY looking at.
After a short debate about what we should do we removed it with the plier of a swiss army knive which was the only tool available on our small boat (not intended for overnight stays), since we were on the ocean, in a developing country, a few hours away from the coast and several hours away from any vet (probably days from any vet specialised in reptiles, not to mention sea turtles) and x-ray machines. Plus, we would have incured a penalty (up to time in jail) on ourselves by removing the turtle since that is beyond our research permits. He did very obviously not enjoy the procedure very much, but we hope that he is now able to breath more freely.
The blood from the shoulder is from a 6mm skin biopsy we took previously to this event for a genetic study (part of our permitted research), which usually doesn't bleed much, but which started bleeding while restraining the turtle.
We disinfected the air passageway with iodine and kept the turtle for observation before releasing him back into the wild.
The bleeding stopped pretty much immediately after the removal of the straw.
The turtle very likely ate the straw and regurgitated the straw where it ended up in the wrong passageway. The nasal cavity of sea turtles is connected directly to the palate (roof of the mouth) by a long nasopharyngeal duct.

Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines (the crown group of the superorder Chelonia), characterised by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield. "Turtle" may either refer to the Testudines as a whole, or to particular Testudines which make up a form taxon that is not monophyletic.
The order Testudines includes both extant (living) and extinct species. The earliest known turtles date from 215 million years ago, making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups and a more ancient group than lizards, snakes and crocodiles. Of the many species alive today, some are highly endangered.
Like other reptiles, turtles are ectotherms—their internal temperature varies according to the ambient environment, commonly called cold-blooded. However, leatherback sea turtles have noticeably higher body temperature than surrounding water because of their high metabolic rate.
Like other amniotes (reptiles, dinosaurs, birds, and mammals), they breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water. The largest turtles are aquatic.

Bugs looks up "Tasmanian devil" in his encyclopedia and discovers that it's a "strong murderous beast" that eats just about any animal. It doesn't mention rabbits, and so the Tasmanian devil, who has been reading over Bugs's shoulder, pencils in "rabbits" himself. Bugs calmly asks, "What's up, doc?" He then spends the day tricking the wild, snorting, snarling beast with a bubble-gum chicken, a decoy deer, a giant slingshot and finally a classified ad in the Tasmanian Post-Dispatch.

Grand Cayman Turtle Experience - Holding & Swimming with Turtles!!
This was one of the coolest places we have ever been. We visited the Cayman Turtle Farm, an attraction we highly recommend. We were able to have an amazing time looking at and holding turtles, swimming with turtles, looking at alligators and sharks, feeding birds, sliding down a fun water slide, and we even saw a variety of wild lizards! This internationally renowned research and conservation center for sea turtles was a memorable part of our trip. The reason you only see some of us for most of this experience and Zac just does a couple activities is because we were at the doctor for his eye most of the day. What’s one of the things you’re likely to see crossing the road this Spring? A Snapping Turtle of course! So Coyote Peterson is going to give you a few tips on how you can help it survive the busy streets!

This was one of the coolest places we have ever been. We visited the Cayman Turtle Farm, an attraction we highly recommend. We were able to have an amazing time looking at and holding turtles, swimming with turtles, looking at alligators and sharks, feeding birds, sliding down a fun water slide, and we even saw a variety of wild lizards! This internationally renowned research and conservation center for sea turtles was a memorable part of our trip. The reason you only see some of us for most of this experience and Zac just does a couple activities is because we were at the doctor for his eye most of the day. My kids went with their grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins so they could still participate in this excursion.

OUR STORY:
The research team around Christine Figgener, in collaboration with Dr. Nathan J. Robinson, found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during a in-water research trip in Costa Rica.
He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril.
After initially thinking that we are looking at a parasitic worm, and trying to remove it to identify it, we cut a small piece of to investigate further and finally identified what we were REALLY looking at.
After a short debate about what we should do we removed it with the plier of a swiss army knive which was the only tool available on our small boat (not intended for overnight stays), since we were on the ocean, in a developing country, a few hours away from the coast and several hours away from any vet (probably days from any vet specialised in reptiles, not to mention sea turtles) and x-ray machines. Plus, we would have incured a penalty (up to time in jail) on ourselves by removing the turtle since that is beyond our research permits. He did very obviously not enjoy the procedure very much, but we hope that he is now able to breath more freely.
The blood from the shoulder is from a 6mm skin biopsy we took previously to this event for a genetic study (part of our permitted research), which usually doesn't bleed much, but which started bleeding while restraining the turtle.
We disinfected the air passageway with iodine and kept the turtle for observation before releasing him back into the wild.
The bleeding stopped pretty much immediately after the removal of the straw.
The turtle very likely ate the straw and regurgitated the straw where it ended up in the wrong passageway. The nasal cavity of sea turtles is connected directly to the palate (roof of the mouth) by a long nasopharyngeal duct.

Chennai, June 17 (ANI): A turtle in a Chennai zoo has been fitted with wheels after it lost one of its front legs in a suspected predator attack. The two-year old female star turtle, an endangered species, was seriously injured and faced difficulty moving around. The veterinary doctors at the zoo then thought of fitting wheels to help in her movement. They made it a point to use lightweight material, including wheels used for rolling windows and a light steel rod, in order to make movement easy for the turtle. The turtle can now be seen freewheeling around and is probably the fastest of all in its enclosure.
