HEARTBEAT CYMBALS Review / Demo || Studio - Raw - Holey || Jonathan Ortiz
Ladies and gentlemen,
I'm pleased to present to you a video my HEARTBEAT CYMBALS Demo and Review! This video is long overdue, but I'm hopeful that it can shed some light on this fantastic brand, and help to demonstrate why they are the best cymbals I've ever played.
I've been endorsed by HEARTBEAT PERCUSSION since 2016. Since then, I've had to privilege of exploring my voice on the kit, utilizing cymbals from the "Studio", "Raw" and "Holey" series. What you'll find here is the following cymbal setup (from left to right), along with a short performance of each for context:
- 16" HOLEY China
- 14" RAW Hi-Hats
- 17" STUDIO Crash
- 20" RAW Ride
- 16" RAW Crash
- 19" STUDIO Crash
- 20" RAW China

Jonathan Ortiz | RAMON ORTIZ | Selvatica
Listen with headphones and watch in HD! Tribute Video #13 is the powerful "Selvatica", the second single from Ramon Ortiz's sophomore album, PORTAL.
Over the course of the 3+ years I've played with Ramon we've had plenty of memorable shows and experiences. A special one for me was recording two songs for the PORTAL album, "Selvatica" and "Jamakeo".
I remember early into my time playing with Ramon and learning his style and artistic approach, he brought the main riff into a practice session and asked what I would do with it. To which I responded with some patterns I felt would fit. Some time later, I was given a track to learn that ended up being that same riff we'd noodled on. It was aggressive, edgy, and very percussive - right up my alley!
This song needs to feel like an onslaught, so...

Getting back to the prog. side of things with TESSERACT for Tribute Video #11! This is part one of three that makes up their phenomenal, "OF MATTER" from their album Altered State.
For a while I'd been wanting to tackle something more challenging and finally made my decision to go with these guys. You wouldn't know it, but initially I wasn't a fan. When it comes to rock/metal listening, I tend to not enjoy the softer clean vocals - favoring more harsher vocals, though not always screaming. However, this bands blend of ambient prog with aggressive djent and melodious leads made for a fantastic combination. In this world, the vocals I used to not enjoy, fit like a glove and work seamlessly. Since then I've grown fond of their trademark style and sound.
Musically, the drums really steal the...

What blows me away about these cymbals is their versatility and durability. I've used these in many different settings ranging from Metal, Worship, Funk, Pop, Blues, Jam/Improv, and more. These cymbals always feel at home in whatever musical situation. They are responsive and musical with the softest touch or the heaviest of hits. They can take a beating, yet never warp or lose the tonal qualities that demonstrate the craftsmanship and care that goes into each HEARTBEAT Cymbal. While some cymbals from other companies may look like Heartbeat cymbals, they work to ensure that the specific shaping, hammering, finishing, lathing and weight of each cymbal meets HEARTBEAT specifications.
(As a bonus, their customer service is top notch, and they always put the artist/player first!)

To which I responded with some patterns I felt would fit. Some time later, I was given a track to learn that ended up being that same riff we'd noodled on. It was aggressive, edgy, and very percussive - right up my alley!
This song needs to feel like an onslaught, so my approach is to keep a mostly half-time/breakdown feel, while keeping a groove and a driving pulse throughout. I keep the double-bass thumping consistently, little to no ghost notes across the snare, and solid quarter notes on the cymbals. This compliments the chunk and power of Ian Santiago's bass performance quite nicely! The solo section maintains this focus, but changes the dynamic a bit to allow the guitar to really stand out.
The space that's created by taking this approach allows a special treat to the listener, as Oscar Santiago (PUYA, ILL NINO, ANKLA) lays down some juicy conga/percussive work to bring the song together.
There's more to come, and possibly some big news on the horizon. Stay tuned and thanks for the support!

Audio was recorded through a PreSonus Firebox, which served as a pre-amp, with the output signal going into a Lexicon Omega Interface. This via USB 2.0 into LogicPro9, with Shure mics and a ZOOM iQ5 for the overheads. I did all the mixing for this video and, for a novice, I'm happy with how it turned out. I still got a long ways to go and I'm eager to learn! Hope you enjoy it!

Musically, the drums really steal the show from me, on top of the creative bass and odd-time signatures. I really dig the feeling of the guitars taking the listener on a journey, with the rhythm section providing the nuances to make the journey memorable. I'm particularly fond of the implied odd-times, seemingly in 4/4, while actually switching around between sub-divisions of three.
All in all, it's a beast of a song across the three parts. "Retrospect" and "Resist" are coming up next to complete the movement.
