Gina and I took a ferry to Zamami island which is a part of the Kerama islands near Okinawa Japan. we rented bikes and went snorkeling and just rode around to see what the island had to offer. the ferry boat ride takes about 1 hour one way. renting bikes is pretty cheap for the day you can also rent scooters. definitely one of the best places to snorkel in japan

Satoumi is defined as marine and coastal landscapes that have been formed and maintained by prolonged interaction between humans and ecosystems. The essential elements of the Okinawan approach to satoumi include "commons" and "local rules". The former refers to resources that are shared and used by local people. The latter refers to resource use regulations that are autonomously determined by local communities.
Okinawa's satoumi is also characterized by ino — shallow, calm waters located between the offshore coral reefs where the waves break, and the shore. Since ancient times, the professional fishers have collected their catch in the outer seas, while village residents relied on the fishery resources of the ino inside the reefs as commons and have led a semi-agrarian, semi-fishing reliant lifestyle. This commons-type usage is practised even today, particularly in the outer Okinawan islands. Such is the case in the Shiraho Lagoon on Ishigaki Island in Okinawa's Yaeyama district.

Okinawa (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken) is Japan's southernmost prefecture, consisting of a few dozen, small islands in the southern half of the Nansei Shoto, the island chain which stretches over about one thousand kilometers from Kyushu to Taiwan. Okinawa Prefecture can be divided into three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto) around Okinawa Island (Okinawa Honto), the Miyako Islands (Miyako Retto) around Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Retto) around Ishigaki Island. Okinawa's climate is subtropical, with temperatures barely falling below 15 degrees in winter. The seas surrounding Okinawa's islands are considered among the world's most beautiful with coral reefs and abundant marine wildlife. Consequently, snorkeling and scuba diving are among Okinawa's top attractions.
The islands making up Okinawa Prefecture, are also known as the Ryukyu Islands, named after the native culture, which is distinctly different from that of the rest of Japan in terms of language, cuisine, arts, etc.
We had tons of fun here and it is definitely a wonderful vacation spot for any travelers venturing off to Japan.

Okinawa Island (沖縄本島, Okinawa-hontō, alternatively 沖縄島 Okinawa-jima; Okinawan: 沖縄/うちなー Uchinaa or 地下/じじ jiji;Kunigami: ふちなー Huchináa) is the largest of the Okinawa Islands and the Ryukyu (Nansei) Islands of Japan. The island has an area of 1,206.93 square kilometers (466.00 sq mi). It is roughly 640 kilometres (400 mi) south of the rest of Japan, roughly the same distance off the coast of China, and 500 km (300 mi) north of Taiwan. The Greater Naha area, home to the capital (or more accurately—prefectural seat) of Okinawa Prefecture on the southwestern part of Okinawa Island, has roughly 800,000 of the island's 1.3 million residents, while the city itself is home to about 320,000. The island hosts the majority of the US troops stationed in Japan. Over the last 70 years, there have been periods of conflict and distrust between the US troops and the local Japanese population.
The island's population is known as one of the longest living people in the world, together with the Sardinians whose island is located in the Mediterranean sea (22 centenarians/100,000 inhabitants); in fact, there are 34 centenarians per 100,000 people, which is more than three times the rate of mainland Japan.

Gina and I took a ferry to Zamami island which is a part of the Kerama islands near Okinawa Japan. we rented bikes and went snorkeling and just rode around to see what the island had to offer. the ferry boat ride takes about 1 hour one way. renting bikes is pretty cheap for the day you can also rent scooters. definitely one of the best places to snorkel in japan

Satoumi is defined as marine and coastal landscapes that have been formed and maintained by prolonged interaction between humans and ecosystems. The essential elements of the Okinawan approach to satoumi include "commons" and "local rules". The former refers to resources that are shared and used by local people. The latter refers to resource use regulations that are autonomously determined by local communities.
Okinawa's satoumi is also characterized by ino — shallow, calm waters located between the offshore coral reefs where the waves break, and the shore. Since ancient times, the professional fishers have collected their catch in the outer seas, while village residents relied on the fishery resources of the ino inside the reefs as commons and have led a semi-agrarian, semi-fishing reliant lifestyle. This commons-type usage is practised even today, particularly in the outer Okinawan islands. Such is the case in the Shiraho Lagoon on Ishigaki Island in Okinawa's Yaeyama district.

Okinawa Prefecture can be divided into three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto) around Okinawa Island (Okinawa Honto), the Miyako Islands (Miyako Retto) around Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Retto) around Ishigaki Island. Okinawa's climate is subtropical, with temperatures barely falling below 15 degrees in winter. The seas surrounding Okinawa's islands are considered among the world's most beautiful with coral reefs and abundant marine wildlife. Consequently, snorkeling and scuba diving are among Okinawa's top attractions.
The islands making up Okinawa Prefecture, are also known as the Ryukyu Islands, named after the native culture, which is distinctly different from that of the rest of Japan in terms of language, cuisine, arts, etc.

Ryosuke and I just had one of THE most amazing vacations ever - in the island of Okinawa. Okinawa is one of the (many) islands South of mainland Japan. ちょっと早い夏休みをとって、沖縄で楽しい思い出たくさん作ってきたよ! Since Ryosuke and I both took serious pay cuts to start working at home, we haven't been able to travel as much. The Kerama Islands (慶良間諸島 Kerama-shotō?, Okinawan: キラマ Kirama) are a group of 22 islands located 32 kilometres (20 mi) southwest of Okinawa Island in Japan. Four of the islands are inhabited: Tokashiki Island, Zamami Island, Aka Island, and Geruma Island.[1] The islands are within Shimajiri District.[2] The Kerama-shotō coral reef is a Ramsar Site.[3] During World War II and preliminary to the Battle of Okinawa, soldiers of the 77th Infantry Division landed in the Kerama Islands on March 26, 1945. Ryosuke and I just had one of THE most amazing vacations ever - in the island of Okinawa. Okinawa is one of the (many) islands South of mainland Japan.
ちょっと早い夏休みをとって、沖縄で楽しい思い出たくさん作ってきたよ!
Since Ryosuke and I both took serious pay cuts to start working at home, we haven't been able to travel as much. We found this "package tour" online - flights + hotels + one meal a day was only about $300 per person.

First, head to Shuri Castle. This ancient fortress is fully restored. and - Shuri is located on top of hill, so you get one of the best views in Naha.
Second on the list, shop and eat on Kokusai Dori. This is Okinawas most famous street. It is busy, busy, busy and it has tons of restaurants and shops with colorful souveniors and authentic Okinawa crafts as well.
Your third stop should be the WW2 Peace Memorial. This is located at the southern end of the island. The memorial has the names of everyone who died in the battle of Okinawa. it is a moving monument that is surrounded by stunning views.
I also recommend that you visit Ocean Expo Park and Churaumi Aquarium. There is a village with authentic Okinawan architecture. and - the aquariums largest tank has a whale shark that dwarfs the audience beneath it.
Finally, after you taste the food - enjoy the music - and see the sites - head to the beach.

Looking to get outdoors in Okinawa, Japan. Hiji Falls is the largest waterfall in Okinawa and a good excuse for a hike. Wear some good shoes because this is a vigorous hike.
Transcript: "Hi. I'm James Knott. We're in Okinawa, Japan and today we are going to explore Hiji Falls.
The highest waterfall in Okinawa is located on the northern part of the island in Kunigami village near Okuma. There is a small building at the trailhead where you pay 500 yen for access to the trail. It is a one mile hike to the falls, which starts out gently, but gets quite vigorous when you enter the forest.
The trail follows the Hiji River over many bridges and up and downs dozens of staircases. Along the way, we pass several sweaty hikers returning from the falls.
My good friend Haru-san, who always gets stuck driving me on my adventures around Okinawa, joins me on the trip.
We wore long-sleeved shirts to protect ourselves from the insects, but we didn't really notice any problem with the bugs.
There is a suspension bridge that marks the halfway point of the trail and allows you to get a nice view of the forest and the mountains that surround the river.
We're a little over half way to the falls. The trail is all man-made, so it's not too difficult to walk on although there is a lot of elevation changes. So, with the heat and all the climbing you're going to work up quite a sweat trying to see the falls.
The northern half of Okinawa is very mountainous and sparsely populated. The forest around us is sub-tropical. It is part of the Yambaru Mountain Region and is home to a diverse population of plants and wildlife. It's a pleasure to search the rocks and trees to see the unique animals of the region.
Birdwatching is popular in Japan. And this bird, Akahige, seems to like the attention.
Alright, we've reached Hiji Falls. If you like getting outdoors and you don't mind getting a little sweaty then this is a great hike in Okinawa. I highly recommend it. However, don't expect to cool off once you get here because you're not allowed to swim in the falls or the pool beneath the falls.
At 85 feet, Hiji is the highest waterfall on Okinawa's main island. You won't be blown away by its grandeur, but it's a good excuse to go for a hike. There are several places to have a picnic or you can camp near the trailhead. My big recommendation -- take dry clothes to wear on the ride home.

The Kerama Islands (慶良間諸島 Kerama-shotō?, Okinawan: キラマ Kirama) are a group of 22 islands located 32 kilometres (20 mi) southwest of Okinawa Island in Japan. Four of the islands are inhabited: Tokashiki Island, Zamami Island, Aka Island, and Geruma Island.[1] The islands are within Shimajiri District.[2] The Kerama-shotō coral reef is a Ramsar Site.[3]
During World War II and preliminary to the Battle of Okinawa, soldiers of the 77th Infantry Division landed in the Kerama Islands on March 26, 1945. Further landings followed, and the Kerama group was secured over the next five days. Kerama was used as a staging area for the assault on Okinawa. Four of the islands are inhabited: Tokashiki Island, Zamami Island, Aka Island, and Geruma Island.[1] The islands are within Shimajiri District.[2] The Kerama-shotō coral reef is a Ramsar Site.[3]
During World War II and preliminary to the Battle of Okinawa, soldiers of the 77th Infantry Division landed in the Kerama Islands on March 26, 1945. Further landings followed, and the Kerama group was secured over the next five days. Kerama was used as a staging area for the assault on Okinawa.
