Digital control is a branch of control theory that uses digital computers to act as system controllers. Depending on the requirements, a digital control system can take the form of a microcontroller to an ASIC to a standard desktop computer. Since a digital computer is a discrete system, the Laplace transform is replaced with the Z-transform. Also since a digital computer has finite precision (See quantization), extra care is needed to ensure the error in coefficients, A/D conversion, D/A conversion, etc. are not producing undesired or unplanned effects.
The application of digital control can readily be understood in the use of feedback. Since the creation of the first digital computer in the early 1940s the price of digital computers has dropped considerably, which has made them key pieces to control systems for several reasons:

The demonstration in this video will show you the effect of proportional, derivative, and integral control on a real system. It's a DC motor connected to an optical rotary encoder (quadrature) and is controlled by a digital control loop implemented on a TI Launch Pad MSP432. It uses a series of timers and interrupts to generate the PWM signals to the H-Bridge motor driver, read the pulses from the encoder, and calculate the control effort using a PID control algorithm. It also implements an anti-windup algorithm to improve the system stability since this is a real system and the motor saturates easily. If you listen, you can hear the PWM signal whine as it adjust the current to the motor. When I push on the flag with my hand you will hear it go quiet. That's when the PWM is at 100%...

This kiln started out at with a kiln sitter controller using cones for temperature control. I have since rewired the kiln to accept my PID controller with a thermal couple. This will hopefully give me more control over the kiln for a more projects such as cerakoting. PID controller with 25 amp solid state relay, and thermal couple.
