The University of Helsinki (Finnish: Helsingin yliopisto, Swedish: Helsingfors universitet, Latin: Universitas Helsingiensis, abbreviated UH) is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but was founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Turku, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. Around 36,500 students are currently enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.
As of August 1, 2005, the University complies with the standards of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers Bachelor, Master, Licenciate, and Doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor's degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2015 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

Media artist Jürgen Scheible painted the main building of University of Helsinki at Senate Square and three other buildings in different campuses during a MobiSpray event of University of Helsinki on 18.1.-21.1.2010. Scheible's project, Mobispray, combines mobile technology and art. You can spray anything with your mobile phone -- for example fill in the façade of the University Main Building with painted balls -- and it's legal! The technology is based on motion detection software, which turns mobile phones into 'spray cans'. Scheible has 'painted' several public buildings in the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Houses of Parliament in London. A talk on risks in oil spill risk analysis and Bayesian inference in risk analysis. Especially, I will focus on the learning process in science and how the oil impact studies should be carried out. I argue that the classical statistics and the logic learned from that causes losses to those who suffer from accidents. There is a need for a major change in scientific practices.
European Semiotics is a periodical lecture course held in November 2011, delivered as a part of teaching of semiotics at the University of Helsinki. It was given at the amphitheater of the University Museum 'Arppeanum'. Lectures deal with history of semiotics, and particularly regarding two central phenomena in the European tradition: 1) Claude Lévi-Strauss and his structuralism, and 2) the so-called Paris school of semiotics founded by A.J. Greimas. As to the latter, his basic concepts are introduced, notions which still constitute one of the main streams in semiotics, particularly in Italy, Spain, Fance, Latin America, and Canada, not to mention Finland. Thereafter, lectures focus on the new theory of semiotics elaborated by Eero Tarasti, the so-called existential semiotics. Its ro...
