Dan Siegel: Part 08 - The Opportunity of Community
Dr. Siegel reintroduces the concept Alloparenting and explains that a baby's brain is designed to have more than one attachment figure. Dr. Siegel reintroduces the concept Alloparenting and explains that a baby's brain is designed to have more than one attachment figure. Families are too isolated in today's modern life, and this results in unhealthy pressure being placed on one individual, usually the mother. Parents can't be all things to their children; they need to call on older, wiser and stronger people to help raise their child. Dr. Seigel reminds us that we are all part of the human family and that everything we do should be with the health of the larger world in mind. If the planet is to survive we need to learn how to serve and savor the world.

There were eight dolphins total, four adult/calf pairs. One would assume that they were mother and calf pairs. However, bottlenose and other toothed dolphins (notably sperm whales) engage in cooperative "babysitting", called "alloparenting." The mother and the alloparent switch off swimming with the calf, allowing one to rest between turns, or to engage in deep dives while hunting - diving deeper or swimming faster than the calf can manage.

A week-old baby Francois’ langur held on tightly to a subadult as members of the San Diego Zoo’s langur troop foraged and climbed around their exhibit this morning. Francois’ langurs, also known as Francois’ leaf monkeys, practice alloparenting, which means every family member participates in raising the infant. The youngster can often be seen being passed around as each of the langurs take turns caring for their newest addition.
“The baby is doing fantastic! We’re all really excited and very impressed,” said Joe Milo, keeper at the San Diego Zoo. "The baby has gotten a lot stronger within just the last week. It’s starting to look around and be very curious about its environment.”
Langurs are born with bright orange hair while their parents are black in color. It’s thought this color distinction makes it easier for the whole troop to identify and look after the infants. The youngster’s color usually changes within the first six months, when the juvenile becomes an almost perfect copy of the adults.
The San Diego Zoo is home to five Francois’ langurs, counting the newest arrival born on Nov. 14, which can be seen in the Zoo’s Asian Passage. The Zoo was the first in North America to house Francois’ langurs and established the population now found in American zoos. Researchers at San Diego Zoo Global are studying Francois’ langurs to learn more about their physiology, diet and habitat use. The species is native to tropical forests in Asia.

Zara (left) and Kalsha are 2 of the best working dogs anyone could wish for. Intelligent, diligent and with a great sense for cooperation, they have been guarding my place and my precious birds well.
With a little encouragement, their cooperation is now even extended to the raising of their 2 litters. As can be seen from this video, Zara, the first-time mum, will readily perform the task of stimulating urination and defecation for a puppy nursing on Kalsha (and vice versa). Once again, these 2 bitches have shown to me that there is indeed, a deep mutual understanding and a great sense of cooperation existing between them.
Please take note that many other bitches will not hesitate to kill the new-born pups of other bitches if they have access to them and especially if they are also nursing their own. Communal nursing (and alloparenting) is not the norm for domestic dogs and any attempts at this must be carried out cautiously and with a good understanding of the animals involved.

Mother pinnipeds have different strategies for maternal care and lactation. Phocids such as elephant seals, grey seals and hooded seals remain on land or ice and fast during their relatively short lactation period–four days for the hooded seal and five weeks for elephant seals. The milk of these species consist of up to 60% fat, allowing the young to grow fairly quickly. In particular, northern elephant seal pups gain 4 kg (9 lb) each day before they are weaned. Some pups may try to steal extra milk from other nursing mothers and gain weight more quickly than others. Alloparenting occurs in these fasting species; while most northern elephant seal mothers nurse their own pups and reject nursings from alien pups, some do accept alien pups with their own.

The "wedge-capped capuchin" or "weeper capuchin" is a capuchin monkey from South America. It is found in northern Brazil, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname, Venezuela and possibly northern Colombia. The "Cebus" genus is divided into several different species. However, taxonomists argue over the specific divisions within the genus, which are uncertain and controversial. "Cebus olivaceus "is known to dwell in tall, primary forest and travel over long distances during the day.
These primates are medium-sized monkeys with distinctive "wedge cap" markings on their head and slightly longer limbs than other capuchins for jumping through the forest canopy. Similar to other capuchin monkeys, the diet of wedge-capped capuchin primarily consists of fruits, invertebrates, other plant parts, and on rare occasions small vertebrates. They have also been known to rub millipedes against their fur, especially in the rainy seasons, as a potential means of mosquito repellent. Although this species is classified as an animal of least concern by IUCN Red List of Threatened species, it falls prey to many predators in South America ranging from vultures to jaguars.
"Cebus olivaceus" is a polygamous species that lives in groups anywhere from 5-30 individuals, with a female biased sex ratios. The group is organized according to a pre-determinded hierarchal system of dominance for both males and females. Although biological lineage is less of a factor of dominance for males than it is for females, due to male migration between groups. Wedge-capped capuchin partake in several behavioral mechanisms to assert and maintain dominance within the group including: infanticide, when an infant is deliberately killed; grooming, used to facilitate social rapport; and alloparenting, which is when members of the group care for offspring that are not their own.

The "common vampire bat" is a small, leaf-nosed bat native to the Americas. It is one of three extant species of vampire bat, the other two being the hairy-legged and the white-winged vampire bats. These species are the only known parasitic mammals. The common vampire bat mainly feeds on the blood of livestock, approaching its prey at night while they are sleeping. It uses its razor-sharp teeth to cut open the skin of its hosts and laps up their blood with its long tongue.
The species is highly polygynous, and dominant adult males defend harems of females. It is one of the most social of bat species with a number of cooperative behaviors such as alloparenting, social grooming and food sharing. Because it feeds on livestock and is a carrier of rabies, the common vampire bat is considered a pest. Its conservation status is categorized as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature because of "its wide distribution, presumed large population tolerance of a degree of habitat modification, and because it is unlikely to be declining at nearly the rate required to qualify for listing in a threatened category."
The common vampire bat was first classified as "Phyllostoma rotundum" by Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire in 1810. The species received several scientific names before being given its current one—"Desmodus rotundus"—by Oldfield Thomas in 1901. It is classified under the subfamily Desmodontinae along with two other species: the hairy-legged vampire bat , and the white-winged vampire bat . These three species compose the "true" vampire bats, as opposed to the "false" vampires of the family Megadermatidae and the spectral bat. All three species of Desmodontinae specialize in feeding on the blood of warm-blooded animals. However, the common vampire bat feeds on mammalian blood more than the other two species, which primarily feed on that of birds. The three species resemble each other, but the common vampire bat can be distinguished by its longer thumb. It is the only extant member of its genus, although other fossil species have been described.
