What a Misdemeanor Can Mean on Your Record
A misdemeanor is a lessor crime than a felony and are divided by degrees.
A 1st degree misdemeanor conviction may result in up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
A few examples of this offense are:
• Resisting arrest
• Marijuana possession
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Battery
• And Stalking
A 2nd degree misdemeanor conviction may result in up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. Examples include:
• Passing a bad check
• Disorderly conduct or intoxication
• Driving without a valid license
• Trespassing
• And Loitering
Regardless of the classification, any conviction can have serious consequences for your future.
Prospective employers may be able to find this information through a simple background check.

Misdemeanors are crimes for which the maximum sentence is no more than one year in county jail. But often the judge will place the person on misdemeanor probation--or what's sometimes called summary probation.
Probation means that the court imposes certain rules, often called "terms and conditions." These can include paying fine and restitution, doing community service, attending classes, and always to "obey all laws".
Generally a person on misdemeanor probation does not have to report to a probation officer, and is free to leave the state and travel.

Misdemeanor
A misdemeanor (American English) or misdemeanour (British English) is any "lesser" criminal act in some common law legal systems. What is misdemeanor (or summary) probation? Is there a probation officer? Can I travel? What are the restrictions? In this video, a criminal defense lawyer explains.
Misdemeanors are crimes for which the maximum sentence is no more than one year in county jail. But often the judge will place the person on misdemeanor probation--or what's sometimes called summary probation.
Probation means that the court imposes certain rules, often called "terms and conditions." These can include paying fine and restitution, doing community service, attending classes, and always to "obey all laws".
Generally a person on misdemeanor probation does not have to report to a probation officer, and is free to leave the state and travel.
But a person who violates the terms and conditions can be brought back before the judge to face a probation violation hearing. If a violation is sustained, the judge has discretion to sentence the person to up to the maximum sentence of the crime for which they are on probation.

As of January 1st, 2010, the Harris County District Attorneys office no longer prosecutes drug possession cases, when the controlled substance in question is less than .01 grams. Instead, those individuals found with trace amounts of controlled substances may now only receive a Class C Misdemeanor, equal to a traffic ticket, carrying a maximum fine of $500. This decision primarily deals with residue found on crack-pipes and other drug paraphernalia.
