Public Service Announcement for screening below: CHRISTIANSTED -- This month we will present to the public the premier of "Caribbean Gem: Buck Island Reef National Monument." This ten minute film was made over the course of last year in celebration of 50 years of protection and resource management at Buck Island Reef NM. The film highlights the park's primary resources and the recreational opportunities that the monument provides our on-island and off-island visitors. Buck Island Reef NM is the first of our three National Park units on St. Croix to have a park orientation film of this kind. This occasion will be the first where the film is seen by the general public. It will be distributed to a variety of tourism and promotional venues on and off-island in the coming months. On Thursday night we will show the film a couple of times and also take comments from the public regarding how and where the film should be shown. At the same time, we hope that the film will renew support for the park as we move ahead into the next decades of management for the Park. Park staff will be on hand to discuss the film and any other general questions. The film was produced during FY2013 with North Shore Productions of Portland, Oregon and consultation with the Harper's Ferry Center. Some local cinematographers were used in the shooting of the film's terrestrial and underwater scenes. The park's Interpretation and Education and Resource Management divisions worked together with the producers to generate a local-eye view of the terrestrial and marine resources at the park. This collaboration required underwater footage of the coral reef and marine garden area, as well as late night footage of Hawksbill turtles laying their eggs. The film, while brief, also looks back at the severity of the bleaching events during the early 2000s and discusses the new threats to the reef from the Pacific Lion Fish. It is a great overall look at what Buck Island Reef National Monument continues to protect, 52 years after President John F. Kennedy established the park in December of 1961. The premier screening/lecture will be held from 5:30-6:30 PM in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building. The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be 'free' and open for this event until 7:00 PM. Although the first movie came out over 10 years ago and the last one in 2011, I decided to make a remix to this famous theme song from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and treat it with a big room sound. Download Link: http://froto.getreceiver.com/ I was originally inspired by the song Tsunami by DVBBS & Borgeous because it gave off a great naval vibe and I thought it would interesting to mash it up with the Pirate's theme. However, after experimenting with a direct mash-up I found out that it actually didn't work so I decided instead to construct a remix from scratch. Hence after working on this track throughout winter break, this remix was born! Elements include a naval battle vibe as well as I also wanted to incorporating imagery of large boat party where perhaps the pirates are celebrating a recent victory. The Jack Sparrow sample should also be instantly recognizable. This remix includes mix in points both in the beginning and end so DJ's can easily incorporate this song into their set. Dancers in the crowd should recognize that familiar pirate melody and get right into it. Downtown Kingston STORYLINE Hurricane Ivan bore down on Jamaica on Friday, prompting the government to order a half million (m) people to flee coastal areas. Ivan was forecast to make a direct hit on Kingston, the sprawling capital of one million (m) people in the southeast, and smash across the island to exit around Montego Bay in the northwest. Meteorologists have warned of "life-threatening" flash floods and mudslides. On Friday morning the storm's leading edge was already kicking up heavy rain and winds off the island's eastern tip, forcing authorities to close the airport and leaving hundreds of tourists stranded. In the capital, streets were empty as people stayed home boarding up their houses and setting up shelters in schools and public buildings. Those who did venture out queued for food and provisions in shops still open for business. Businesses were being boarded up in commercial centres and armed private guards and police were already in the streets to guard against possible looting. Montego Bay has already seen some looting. Ivan, a Category 4 hurricane on a scale of 5 with winds of 145 mph (230 kph), could strengthen before striking the narrow 145-mile-long (230-kilometre-long) island Friday afternoon. In its wake, it left Grenada a wasteland of flattened houses, twisted metal and splintered wood. The death toll rose on Friday to 32, and was expected to increase. Police nearly doubled the toll in Grenada to 22 including two unidentified foreign yachters. US officials also ordered people to evacuate from the Florida Keys after forecasters said the storm - the fourth major hurricane of the Atlantic season - could hit the island chain by Sunday after passing the Cayman Islands and crossing Cuba. Ivan is the fiercest hurricane to hit the Caribbean islands in a decade. Countries like Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico etc etc are not considered Central America because they have no historic attachment to that word, those are considered Caribbean countries, and they have always identified with that word historically, Mexico is also not part of Central America, they are in North America, well technically speaking Central America is the southern most region of North America so are North Americans as well, but not regionally. Countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are the only ones who have the word Central America on their flag's seal because they were all once united as a single country named the Federal Republic of Central America, Belize and Panama are physically part of the Central American geography so Guatemalans, Salvadorians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Costa Ricans consider Panamanians and Belizeans as Central Americans too, but not Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans etc. Central America is not a continent, and I'm not claiming it to be. Many like to point out that these are North American countries, and they are right. For the sake of memorization I like chunking countries into manageable regions. Just like the "East Coast" is known by residents of the United States of America as the eastern Seaboard of that country, "Central America" is a colloquial term and not an "official" region to many people. Held in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University, Peepal Tree was able to showcase new and classic works in print and in performance from visiting guest Peepal Tree writers including Curdella Forbes, Kendel Hippolyte, Keith Jardim, Anton Nimblett, Raymond Ramcharitar & Tanya Shirley. The line-up also featured UK based Peepal Tree writers John Lyons, Lakshmi Persaud, Dorothea Smartt & local writers Khadijah Ibrahiim, Simon Murray, Desiree Reynolds plus friends of Peepal Tree such as leading Caribbean academic Alison Donnell and the writer and Jamaican gay rights activist Thomas Glave; and the launch of Inscribe National with Peepal Tree's new associate fiction editor Jacob Ross. The presence and participation of world-class Peepal Tree writers created a real buzz, and reinforced Peepal Tree's distinct and inclusive identity as a leading publisher, with international, local community and academic links, with an integrated writer development programme, Inscribe. The events were promoted through online networks, and with a printed flyer which we used to target local communities and local authorities. 130 delegates attended from the UK, the US, Canada, the Caribbean and Europe. including libraries, academics, writers, publishers, members of the public. Feedback has been universally positive. The satellite events were particularly successful at bringing the richness of Caribbean and Black British writers to a wider audience, and in the mixing of academic and community audiences. The partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University worked really well, and the high quality of the venue and services provided by them were much praised. We are extremely indebted to our team of volunteers and the organizing team who worked tirelessly. The activity 'finished' on a real high, with a participatory theatre event, and we were hugely gratified and energized by the evidence of the high esteem and reputation that Peepal Tree has cultivated. We learned that there was a thirst for more regular conferences and exchanges on Caribbean literature in the UK, and that Narrating the Caribbean Nation could be a hub for such activity.
