Joe Sacco's comics are entirely unique in the field. No one else writes and draws international political reportage in a comic book format. His books are amazing glimpses into the complex issues of global politics that never lose sight of the everyday people who live in states of war. The fact that they are comic books makes them only more remarkable.
Joe was born in Malta, October 2nd, 1960. He moved around the world to Australia, before settling in Los Angeles in 1972. As a child he vividly remembers buying war comics and Mad magazine 1950s reprints. He studied at the University of Oregon and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1981. That same year he received his first rejection slip from RAW that noted his strip had "almost been published".
Joe continued to travel extensively in the 1980s living in Europe and Malta where he worked as a cartoonist, an editor and an arts news editor for various comics presses, including The Comics Journal.
Joe traveled to the middle east for the first time in 1992 and came away from Israel and the occupied territories with the material that would make up his groundbreaking 2-part comic book series Palestine (1995, Fantagraphics). Nothing like Palestine had ever been seen before. An accessible, thoughtful, and moving book of Middle East political journalism was hard enough. Joe had achieved all this through the innovative use of the dynamic medium of comics. Sacco was the recipient of the prestigious American Book Award in 1996 for "Palestine".
In 1995, just prior to the Dayton Peace Accord, Sacco traveled to Sarajevo and its surrounding areas. There he began his book Safe Area: Gorazde (2000, Fantagraphics), a staggering and fierce condemnation of the political impotence and badly planned UN operations during the Bosnian conflict. He continues to travel and write about the situation in Bosnia. He has an infrequent series called Stories from Bosnia with Drawn & Quarterly and the fall 2002 book The Fixer, a remarkable story about how people subsist in a state of war, by finding the last thing left to sell: They sell their stories to western journalists like Sacco.
Joe's work has been exhibited at art galleries and universities around the world, and he has lectured on political conflict, journalism, and the art of comics.
Joe lives all over the world, chasing news stories.

Thanks to publishing hyperbole, writers often get called "unique". But Sacco's work truly is, combining as it does oral history, memoir and reportage with cartoons in a way that, when he started out, most people – himself included, at times – considered utterly preposterous.Twenty years on, though, and the American cartoonist is widely regarded as the author of two masterpieces: Palestine, in which he reported on the lives of the inhabitants of the West Bank and Gaza in the early 1990s, with flashbacks to 1948, the beginning of the first Intifada, and the first Gulf War; and Safe Area Gorazde, which describes his experiences in Bosnia in 1994-95. Palestine won an American Book Award, and has sold 30,000 copies in the UK alone (this is a huge figure for a comic book, let alone a political comic book)."With the exception of one or two novelists and poets, no one has ever rendered this terrible state of affairs better than Joe Sacco," wrote Edward Said in his foreword to the complete edition of Palestine. War zones are not, however Sacco's only journalistic focus.
In 2012, Sacco collaborated with Chris Hedges to create Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt which documents the neofeudalism of recession-era America as well as the revolutionary fury of the Occupy Movement. Sacco's most recent work is his most unconventional and--for a cartoonist who has spent his career creating mammoth, intricately woven comics--his most ambitious. The Great War is a single fifty foot long, wordless panel, depicting the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Recently, the entire scene was reproduced in mural on the wall of a paris metro tunnel.

Geography
Located in the central-eastern area of Cilento and near the Alburni mountain range, the municipality borders with Corleto Monforte, Laurino, Piaggine, Roscigno and Teggiano. It has no hamlets (frazioni). The town is located near the spring of the river Sammaro.

Joe Sacco
Joe Sacco (born October 2, 1960) is a Maltese-American cartoonist and journalist. He is best known for his comics journalism, in particular in the books Palestine (1996) and Footnotes in Gaza (2009), on Israeli–Palestinian relations; and Safe Area Goražde (2000) and The Fixer (2003) on the Bosnian War.
Biography
Sacco was born in Malta on October 2, 1960. His father was an engineer and his mother was a teacher. At the age of one, he moved with his family to Melbourne, Australia, where he spent his childhood until 1972, when they moved to Los Angeles. He began his journalism career working on the Sunset High School newspaper in Beaverton, Oregon. While journalism was his primary focus, this was also the period of time in which he developed his penchant for humor and satire. He graduated from Sunset High in 1978.
Sacco earned his B.A. in journalism from the University of Oregon in 1981 in three years. He was greatly frustrated with the journalist work that he found at the time, later saying, "[I couldn't find] a job writing very hard-hitting, interesting pieces that would really make some sort of difference." After being briefly employed by the journal of the National Notary Association, a job which he found "exceedingly, exceedingly boring," and several factories, he returned to Malta, his journalist hopes forgotten. "...I sort of decided to forget it and just go the other route, which was basically take my hobby, which has been cartooning, and see if I could make a living out of that," he later told the BBC.

Joe was born in Malta, October 2nd, 1960. He moved around the world to Australia, before settling in Los Angeles in 1972. As a child he vividly remembers buying war comics and Mad magazine 1950s reprints. He studied at the University of Oregon and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1981. That same year he received his first rejection slip from RAW that noted his strip had "almost been published".
Joe continued to travel extensively in the 1980s living in Europe and Malta where he worked as a cartoonist, an editor and an arts news editor for various comics presses, including The Comics Journal.
Joe traveled to the middle east for the first time in 1992 and came away from Israel and the occupied territories with the material that would make up his groundbreaking 2-part comic book series Palestine (1995, Fantagraphics). Nothing like Palestine had ever been seen before. An accessible, thoughtful, and moving book of Middle East political journalism was hard enough. Joe had achieved all this through the innovative use of the dynamic medium of comics. Sacco was the recipient of the prestigious American Book Award in 1996 for "Palestine".
In 1995, just prior to the Dayton Peace Accord, Sacco traveled to Sarajevo and its surrounding areas. There he began his book Safe Area: Gorazde (2000, Fantagraphics), a staggering and fierce condemnation of the political impotence and badly planned UN operations during the Bosnian conflict. He continues to travel and write about the situation in Bosnia. He has an infrequent series called Stories from Bosnia with Drawn & Quarterly and the fall 2002 book The Fixer, a remarkable story about how people subsist in a state of war, by finding the last thing left to sell: They sell their stories to western journalists like Sacco.
Joe's work has been exhibited at art galleries and universities around the world, and he has lectured on political conflict, journalism, and the art of comics.
Joe lives all over the world, chasing news stories.

Thanks to publishing hyperbole, writers often get called "unique". But Sacco's work truly is, combining as it does oral history, memoir and reportage with cartoons in a way that, when he started out, most people – himself included, at times – considered utterly preposterous.Twenty years on, though, and the American cartoonist is widely regarded as the author of two masterpieces: Palestine, in which he reported on the lives of the inhabitants of the West Bank and Gaza in the early 1990s, with flashbacks to 1948, the beginning of the first Intifada, and the first Gulf War; and Safe Area Gorazde, which describes his experiences in Bosnia in 1994-95. Palestine won an American Book Award, and has sold 30,000 copies in the UK alone (this is a huge figure for a comic book, let alone a political comic book)."With the exception of one or two novelists and poets, no one has ever rendered this terrible state of affairs better than Joe Sacco," wrote Edward Said in his foreword to the complete edition of Palestine. War zones are not, however Sacco's only journalistic focus.
In 2012, Sacco collaborated with Chris Hedges to create Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt which documents the neofeudalism of recession-era America as well as the revolutionary fury of the Occupy Movement. Sacco's most recent work is his most unconventional and--for a cartoonist who has spent his career creating mammoth, intricately woven comics--his most ambitious. The Great War is a single fifty foot long, wordless panel, depicting the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Recently, the entire scene was reproduced in mural on the wall of a paris metro tunnel.

I'm Mark Wiens and thank you very much for watching this video about a few of the top things to do in Kuala Lumpur, a city that just happens to be one of my favorite cities to visit in Southeast Asia. It's the largest and probably the most important and influential city in Malaysia and truly has some amazing sites to offer. Along with modern skyrise towers like the Petronas Towers, there are still lots of traditional historic buildings as well. The awesome mixture of cultures, the mix of traditional and modern, and very importantly, the outstanding cuisine is what makes Kuala Lumpur such a great city to explore!
1. On this list of top things to do in Kuala Lumpur I first stop by the most famous landmark of the the city: the Petronas Towers. These twin giant sky scrapers are huge, and they literally reach towards the heavens and touch the clouds. On the bottom of the Petronas Towers is a pretty fancy shopping mall while the tops of the towers are filled with offices. On the 41st and 42nd floor, there is a sky bridge which connects the two towers together and which is open for visitors. Years ago, it used to be free entrance but unfortunately now they have started to charge a rather steep 80 Malaysian Ringgits per person.
2. After the visiting the Petronas towers, number two on the list is the historical district of old Kuala Lumpur. Visiting and walking around the area is one of the top things to do in Kuala Lumpur and you shouldn't miss the opportunity. From Merdeka Square to the old railroad station, you'll see some amazing architecture and buildings. Another must visit is the National Mosque, which is known as Masjid Negara. With a capacity of 15,000, this is the central and most visited mosque in the city.
3. The Menara KL Tower, along with the Petronas Towers, is one of the dominating features of Kuala Lumpur's skyline. At 421 meters in height, it's one of the world's tallest communications towers. I was lucky enough to be invited to the annual BASE jumping event which was held at the KL Tower so I had a pass to go to the top for the incredible view and to see the event (http://migrationology.com/2012/10/jordan-kilgore-base-jump-kuala-lumpur/). The KL Tower also offer look out viewpoints and a number of restaurants where you can dine with an incredible view.
4. Number 4 is Little India which is better known as Brickfields. Kuala Lumpur is home to many Indian's many from the south of the country. Brickfields is a popular place to browse, shop for all sorts of Indian products and most importantly to eat at some seriously delicious Indian restaurants. 5. Chinatown, located on Petaling Street, is one of the biggest Kuala Lumpur attractions. It's mostly known for it street shopping and restaurants. You can find all sorts of fake brand names and nearly everything imaginable.
6. Thean Hou Temple is one of the most impressive Daoist temples in Kuala Lumpur. It's free to visit and offers insights into the Hainanese community in the city and there are also great views of the city.
7. Central Market, is a top tourist shopping attraction in Kuala Lumpur. Though many of the products are rather touristy, there are some good things waiting to be found.
8. Within central Kuala Lumpur are the KL Lake Gardens and Bird Park. It makes a great tropical escape to the bustling city life.
9. The Batu Caves, located just outside the central part of the city is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur. The caves and shrines are one of the most sacred Hindu sites outside of India.
10. Chow Kit Market is the central fresh wet market in the city. Everyday thousands of shoppers get their Malaysian food ingredients at this interesting market.
11. Malaysian food is the ultimate attraction to visiting Kuala Lumpur. With a great mixture of local Malay, Chinese, and Indian, there's no shortage of incredible dining that will leave you satisfied and hungry for more! For myself, eating is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur!

늦은 오후, 축제에 참여했던 빵집을 찾아 가봤다. 이곳에서는 이탈리아 전통 방식으로 다양한 빵을 만들고 있었다. 주로 이 지역에서 생산되는 신선한 재료를 사용해 그날그날 맛있는 빵을 굽고 있다. 이곳에서 주로 판매하는 것은 이탈리아의 대표적인 빵 포카치아다. 이탈리아에서는 피자 다음으로 많이 먹는 빵이라고 한다. 시골 마을의 유일한 빵집인 만큼 손님이 끊이지 않는다. “환상적인 맛이에요 아주 좋아요.” “맛이 어떠신지요?”“환상적인 맛이에요.”“지역에 따라 여러 종류의 포카치아가 있어요. 제노바 포카치아가 제일 많이 알려진 거라고 말할 수 있어요. 우리는 리구리아식 포카치아를 이곳으로 가지고 왔고 20년째 여기서 생산하고 있습니다.”포카치아 만드는 과정을 지켜봤다. 방법은 생각보다 간단했다. 밀가루에 물, 올리브유와 함께 이스트, 소금을 넣고 반죽을 한다. 반죽이 끝나면 반나절 정도 숙성을 한다. 반죽을 적당한 모양으로 펼쳐 갖가지 고명을 올린다. 준비가 끝나면 달궈진 오븐에 굽기만 하면 된다. 나는 버터가 많이 들어간 포카치아를 먹어봤다. 담백하고 고소한 버터향이 내 입맛에 아주 잘 맞았다.
