Chega de Saudade

"Chega de Saudade" (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʃeɡɐ d(ʒ)i sawˈdad(ʒ)i]) (published English version is "No More Blues") is often considered to be the first recorded bossa nova song. The music was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and the lyrics were written by Vinícius de Moraes. João Gilberto's recording is the most famous.

The song was first recorded by Brazilian singer Elizete Cardoso and released on her 1958 album entitled Canção Do Amor Demais; however, the public took little notice of her release. João Gilberto included the second-ever recorded version of the track on his 1959 album Chega De Saudade. Released as a single, the song became a hit and would solidify bossa nova as a permanent genre in the Latin music lexicon.

The title can be translated roughly as "enough longing," though the Portuguese word, saudade, carries with it a far more complex meaning. The word implies an intensity of heartfelt connection that is yearned for passionately, not unlike feeling withdrawal symptoms from a drug that makes one feel good. Another good analogy might be an intense homesickness. Chega, in this case, means no more, enough.

Chega de Saudade (album)

Chega de Saudade is the debut album from João Gilberto and is often credited as the first bossa nova album. The title can be translated roughly as "enough longing", though the Portuguese word saudade carries with it more complex meaning.

In 2001, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In the same year, it was made an inaugural member of the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame. It was listed by Rolling Stone Brazil as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history.

By the time of the album's release, newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo stated that Gilberto "is one of the most musical of our popular singers, predicated which widely compensates his small voice volume. To this regard, it is worth noting his interpretation of 'Desafinado'. He reveals, besides that, an unorthodox good taste for the choice of the melodies recorded in this first LP and a sobriety in the interpretation as we have rarely observed".

The Ballroom (Portuguese: Chega de Saudade) is a 2007 Brazilian-French romantic drama film directed by Laís Bodanzky. The action is set in a dance hall (gafieira) in São Paulo frequented by old people.

David Parkinson of The Guardian called it a "quirky ensemble piece", and praised it for being "superbly choreographed."Daily Express's Allan Hunter labeled it as "bittersweet" and gave a rating 3 out of 5, saying "If Robert Altman had ever made a film about an old-fashioned dance hall it might have looked something like The Ballroom." Writing for the Evening Standard, Derek Malcom commended it by affirming: "If the film does't always convince, it has some wonderful moments. Bodanzky’s sympathy with his characters is obvious — and the music is as much an attraction as the series of stories we are told about them." On the other hand, David Jenkins from Time Out gave a more negative review, stating "this wannabe-steamy film never manages to generate any dramatic heat because it spreads itself far too thinly across its oversized and mundane cast."
