Dixie Travel Plaza
The Dixie Travel Plaza, previously known as the Dixie Truck Stop and Dixie Trucker's Home, is a large trucker and travel plaza located in McLean, Illinois, on Interstate 55. It was established by J.P. Walters and John Geske in 1928 on old US Route 66 as a small sandwich stand in a truck mechanic's garage. By 1930, quickly growing demand had necessitated expansion into a full-size restaurant. The restaurant was expanded several times afterwards, and rebuilt once after a fire in 1965. Walters, Geske and the Dixie Trucker's Home have been recognized by the Route 66 Association of Illinois for their contributions—from 1926 to 1977—to the character of Route 66. They were inducted into the association's hall of fame on June 9, 1990. Dixie was previously home to the Route 66 Hall of Fame when it opened in 1990. In 2003, after Dixie changed ownership, the museum was moved to a new, larger location in Pontiac, Illinois.
Dixie Travel Plaza is frequently mentioned in travel books and histories of Old US Route 66. It has also been the subject of articles in the Chicago Tribune in articles about Old Route 66. Dixie was referred to as "one of the most impressive" late night stops along I-55. When the Interstate system was constructed and Route 66 was decommissioned, the portion of Route 66 that Dixie was located on became a portion of I-55.

Iowa 80
Iowa 80 is the world's largest truck stop, located along Interstate 80 off exit 284 in Walcott, Iowa. Set on a 220-acre (89 ha) plot of land (four times larger than an average truckstop) -- 75 acres (30 ha) of which are currently developed—the site receives 5,000 visitors daily, and features a 67,000 sq ft (6,200 m2) main building, parking for 800 trucks, and 15 fuel pumps. Four-hundred and fifty employees staff the megaplex.
Iowa 80 is currently affiliated with the TravelCenters of America chain.
Bill Moon, a regional manager for Standard Oil, purchased the land and built the original truckstop in 1964 along the emerging I-80, the 3,000-mile (4,800 km) highway which would directly connect San Francisco with New York. "As they were building I-80, my father was responsible for finding land and building truck stops for Standard," says his daughter Delia Meier. Initially a small white enamel building surrounded by cornfields, it housed a modest truckers store, a one lube bay and a restaurant. Bill Moon took direct control in September 1965, and eventually purchased the site from the corporation in 1984. In 1992, the year of Moon's death, it became a Travelcenter of America franchise, though the facility is still owned and operated by the Moon family. In addition, the Iowa 80 Group also owns the Joplin (MO) Petro on Interstate 44, Oak Grove (MO) 70 off Interstate 70 just outside of Kansas City, and Kenley (NC) 95 off of Interstate 95.

In Pre-Columbian Mexico many cultures matured into advanced civilizations such as the Olmec, the Toltec, the Teotihuacan, the Zapotec, the Maya and the Aztec before the first contact with Europeans. In 1521, Spain conquered and colonized the territory from its base in México-Tenochtitlan, which was administered as the Viceroyalty of New Spain. This territory would eventually become Mexico as the colony's independence was recognized in 1821. The post-independence period was characterized by economic instability, the Mexican-American War and territorial cession to the United States, a civil war, two empires and a domestic dictatorship. The latter led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910, which culminated with the promulgation of the 1917 Constitution and the emergence of the country's current political system. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time that an opposition party won the presidency from the Institutional Revolutionary Party.

Nuevo Laredo
Nuevo Laredo is a city located in the Municipality of Nuevo Laredo in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The city lies on the banks of the Río Grande, across from the United States city of Laredo, Texas. The 2010 census population of the city was 373,725. Nuevo Laredo is part of the Laredo-Nuevo Laredo Metropolitan Area with a total population of 636,516. The municipality has an area of 1,334.02 km² (515.07 sq mi). Both the city and the municipality rank as the third largest in the state.
The city is connected to Laredo, Texas, across the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo) river by three international bridges and a rail bridge. The city is larger than its U.S. counterpart, but is younger, having been established after the Republic of Texas broke away from Mexico. It is the largest inland port in Mexico, just as its counterpart across the border is the busiest inland port(bridge crossing) in the United States. As an indication of its economic importance, one of Mexico's Banderas monumentales is located in the city (these flags have been established in state capitals and cities of significance).

Southern California
Southern California (SoCal) is a megaregion, or megapolitan area, in the southern area of the U.S. state of California. Large urban areas include Greater Los Angeles and Greater San Diego. Utah
Utah (/ˈjuːtɔː/ ori/ˈjuːtɑː/) (Arapaho: Wo'tééneihí' ) is a state in the Western United States. It became the 45th state admitted to the Union on January 4, 1896. Bill Mack
Bill Mack is one of the most recognizable voices in country music radio. For many years, Mack was best known as the host of The Country Roads Show, (later U.S. 1 Trucking Show, and later still, Midnight Cowboy Trucking Show) the overnight country music show on WBAP, a clear channel station in Fort Worth. Mack's show catered primarily to truck drivers who traveled during the late-night hours. Its opening theme music was an instrumental rendition of Orange Blossom Special, performed by Felix Slatkin and his orchestra. Because of WBAP's clear channel signal range via skywave at night, Mack's show was heard over most of the continental United States. Mack began his show in 1969. He briefly took his show to Mexican "border blaster" station XERF, but returned to WBAP when an agreement for Mack to do his show from his Fort Worth home fell through.
In addition, Mack hosts the syndicated radio show Country Crossroads, heard on more than 800 stations across the country, and a similar cable television show on FamilyNet. He also hosts the Overdrive Top Ten Countdown, a weekly one-hour country music countdown geared toward truckers, in syndication.

Dale Sommers
Bruce Dale Sommers (born November 26, 1943), known by his nickname "The Truckin' Bozo", is an American radio personality, best known for his long-running country music show geared toward truck drivers. Sommers hosted the show overnights from Cincinnati, Ohio based clear channel station WLW from 1984 to 2004, with a small network of similarly high-powered stations across the United States. Sommers discontinued playing music on his nightly show and commenced focusing all his energies on truck news, news and talk from his listeners. Sommers made an attempt to retire from radio in 2004, but XM Radio was successful in getting him to do an afternoon truck show, which now airs on Sirius Radio and XM from 4–7 PM Eastern time.
"The Bozo" made national headlines when he helped to catch a robber at a convenience store in Camilla, Georgia. Sommers was talking live on the air with regular caller Linda Driskill, known as "Mississippi Lady" to listeners, when he heard Driskill admonish someone not to come behind her counter. She then hung up the phone. Sommers was concerned for her safety, so he called the Camilla police (who knew Driskill from Sommers' show). The police responded to Driskill's store and quickly apprehended the robber.

Dave Nemo
Dave Nemo is an American radio personality, currently hosting a show on the Road Dog channel 171 on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio. Nemo's show is geared toward entertainment and news favored by truck drivers.
Before his current stint with XM, Nemo was best known as the host of The Road Gang, the overnight truckers' show broadcast for many years from WWL (AM) Radio in New Orleans and heard throughout most of the country through its clear channel signal. Nemo was originally the show's weekend and fill-in host behind Charlie Douglas, then took over the top spot on the show when Douglas left. Big John Parker then took Nemo's spot as weekend host.
Nemo joined Road Dog (then Open Road) at its inception. His show is currently aired daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. EST. Ironically, two of his biggest overnight competitors during his Road Gang days, Bill Mack and Dale "The Truckin' Bozo" Sommers, are now colleagues on the channel.
Nemo's show is broadcast from studios in Nashville, where guests from the country music industry often stop by.

Iyman Faris
Iyman Faris (aka Mohammad Rauf; born June 4, 1969 in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan) is a Pakistani American former truck driver from Columbus, Ohio who was convicted of providing material support to Al Qaeda, for his role in a plot to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge. His name has sometimes been mistranscribed or reported as Lyman Harris.
On June 22, 2003, the United States Department of Justice revealed to Time that Faris had served as a double agent for the FBI for months. Faris was detained two weeks after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was arrested in Pakistan on March 1. While installed as a double agent for the U.S. government, Faris sent messages to his terrorist commanders by mobile phone and email from an FBI safe house in Virginia. A senior Bush administration official told Time, "He was sitting in the safe house making calls for us. It was a huge triumph."
He first entered the United States in 1994, and married Geneva Bowling the following year. Faris became a U.S. citizen in 1999, and allegedly returned to Pakistan the following year, and moved along to Afghanistan, where he is accused of having met Osama bin Laden. While in the region, documents provided to the court show that Faris was asked to investigate the possibility of using an ultralight aircraft as an "escape plane" for bin Laden. He used an internet cafe in Karachi, Pakistan to research ultralights and purchased 2000 sleeping bags.

Jerry Moyes
Jerry Moyes is the founder, chairman and CEO of Phoenix-based Swift Transportation, one of the largest trucking companies in the nation. Moyes is also owner of charter airline Swift Air. He was a majority owner of the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League before the Coyotes filed bankruptcy and were sold to the NHL in 2009, and the Arizona Sting of the National Lacrosse League. Moyes is also a limited partner in the Arizona Diamondbacks, and was once a minority owner of the Phoenix Suns.
A graduate of Weber State College, Moyes is currently vice president at large of the American Trucking Association and previously served as president of the Arizona Motor Transport Association.
Jerry and his wife Vickie have been married for over 39 years and have 10 children and 10 grandchildren.
Moyes was originally a minority partner in Steve Ellman's ownership group, which bought the Coyotes from Richard Burke in 2001. On Sept. 26, 2006, Ellman sold controlling interest in the Coyotes, Arizona Sting, and the lease to Jobing.com Arena to Moyes. He retained Wayne Gretzky as part-owner and head of hockey operations.

Jimmy Hoffa
James Riddle "Jimmy" Hoffa (born February 14, 1913 – disappeared July 30, 1975, declared legally dead July 30, 1982) was an American labor union leader.
Hoffa was involved with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union as an organizer from 1932 to 1975. He served as the union's General President from 1958 to 1971. He secured the first national agreement for teamsters' rates in 1964, and played a major role in the growth and development of the union, which eventually became the largest single union in the United States, with over 1.5 million members during his terms as its leader.
Hoffa, who had been convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery, and fraud in 1964, was imprisoned in 1967, sentenced to 13 years, after exhausting the appeal process. It was not until mid-1971 that he officially resigned the Teamsters' presidency, an action that was part of a pardon agreement with U.S. president Richard Nixon, in order to facilitate his release later that year. Nixon blocked Hoffa from union activities until 1980 (which would have been the end of his prison term, had he served the full sentence). Hoffa attempted to overturn this order and to regain support.

Johnnie Bryan Hunt
Johnnie Bryan Hunt, Sr. (February 28, 1927 – December 7, 2006), better known as J. B. Hunt, was an American entrepreneur who founded J.B. Hunt Transport Services, the largest publicly owned trucking company in the USA. His company is based in Lowell, Arkansas.
Hunt was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Growing up during the great depression put a large strain on him.
His first job was working for his uncle in his sawmill so that the family could survive. After a brief time in the US Army, Hunt spent the 1950s as a lumber salesman, auctioneer, and truck driver before starting a rice hulls business with his wife Johnelle in 1961. Unfortunately his first attempt at the trucking business was not a success. He lost roughly $19,000. He returned to the trucking industry in 1969, with five tractors and seven trailers.
Hunt was known throughout his life for his generosity, and was famous for carrying around a money clip containing $100 bills, which he would hand out to people he felt could use the money.

Kelly Reno
Kelly Reno, born (June 19, 1966) to cattle ranchers in Pueblo, Colorado is a former juvenile actor who was cast at age 13 in the role of Alec Ramsey, the young boy who is marooned on a deserted island along with a horse, in The Black Stallion (based on the novel by Walter Farley).
Reno also appeared in the 1983 film adaptation of The Black Stallion Returns, alongside Vincent Spano. His acting career was cut short when the pick-up truck he was driving was hit by a semi-truck. He had severe injuries and the long recovery time put an end to his acting career.
After 20 years as a cattle rancher, Kelly Reno became a semi-truck driver himself. He lives in Colorado with his third wife and her daughter.

Larry Walters
Lawrence Richard Walters, nicknamed "Lawnchair Larry" or the "Lawn Chair Pilot", (April 19, 1949 – October 6, 1993) was an American truck driver who took flight on July 2, 1982, in a homemade airship. Dubbed Inspiration I, the "flying machine" consisted of an ordinary patio chair with 45 helium-filled weather balloons attached to it. Walters rose to an altitude of over 15,000 feet (4,600 m) and floated from his point of origin in San Pedro, California, into controlled airspace near Los Angeles International Airport. His flight was widely reported in many newspapers.
Walters had always dreamed of flying, but was unable to become a pilot in the United States Air Force because of his poor eyesight. Walters had first thought of using weather balloons to fly at age 13 and 14, after seeing them hanging from the ceiling of a military surplus store. Twenty years later he decided to do so. His intention was to attach a few helium-filled weather balloons to his lawnchair, cut the anchor, and then float above his backyard at a height of about 30 feet (9.1 m) for several hours. He planned to use a pellet gun to burst balloons to float gently to the ground.

Swift Transportation (NYSE: SWFT) is a Phoenix, Arizona based publicly held American truckload motor shipping carrier, the largest in the United States with over 16,000 trucks.

Carl Moyes was a truck driver hauling produce for C. R. England Trucking in the 1940s out of northern Utah.[2] In the late 1950s Betty and Carl Moyes started a small trucking company in Plain City, Utah, B & C Truck Leasing, and after their son, Jerry, graduated from Weber State University in 1966, they moved the small company to Phoenix, Arizona. Carl, and his two sons, Ronald and Jerry (vice-president), formed the company, as Common Market, in Arizona, that would become Swift.
Operations began in 1966 transporting imported steel from the ports of Los Angeles, California to Phoenix, Arizona, and then returning with cotton from Arizona to be delivered to Southern California.[3]
The name Swift Transportation was purchased from a descendant of the Swift Meat Packing family, when the Moyes family bought the trucking assets of Swift & Company. The three Moyeses and a fourth partner, Randy Knight, grew the business to $25 million in annual revenues by 1984. Jerry became president, chairman, and CEO that same year, and when Carl died in 1985, Jerry bought out his other two partners, his brother Ronald and Randy Knight. Ronald would continue to hold shares in Swift while Randy would become a co-founder in Knight Transportation.[4]
In April 1988 Swift purchased Greenville, South Carolina based Cooper Motor Lines from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based ARA Services.[5]
By 1990, Swift Transportation has grown to a $125 million carrier with over 800 trucks.[3] The company did an initial public offering (IPO) in 1990 and became a publicly traded entity on the NASDAQ market system under the symbol SWFT.
In 1991, with money raised in the IPO, Swift bought Stephens City, Virginia based Arthur H. Fulton Inc. for $9 million dollars. Fulton was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection at the time.[6]
The company growth has continued since 1988 with the purchasing of (11) different motor carriers throughout the United States, including M.S. Carriers, of Memphis, Tennessee in 2000. The shareholders of M.S. Carriers obtained a 22% stake in the combined company.[7]
Moyes was about to retire, but was forced out as chief executive officer (CEO) at Swift in October 2005 after an United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigation into insider trading. Without admitting or denying wrongdoing he paid a $1.26 million settlement. The Moyes family still controlled about 39% of the issued public stock.[8][9]
In November 2006 Moyes offered to buy Swift for $29 a share. The offer was raised to $2.4 billion ($31.55 per share) for all outstanding shares not controlled by the family and assuming $332 million in outstanding debt, the transaction was closed on May 10, 2007.[10] To finance the acquisition, Moyes formed Saint Acquisition Corporation, and issued $2.1 billion of a senior secured credit facility and $835 million in second-lien senior secured notes.[8] The company's drivers and eighty-three percent of all outstanding shares (approximately half of those controlled by the family) supported the buyout.[9]
Swift’s terminal network has grew to over forty full service facilities in both the continental United States and Mexico, but then closed a few after the 2008 financial recession. The total number of employees dropped from 21,900,[11] to approximately 17,700.[1] Swift owns 100% of Trans-Mex, a Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, based carrier. Swift offers border crossing services at all major Mexican border crossings. Swift maintains a presence in every Canadian province.[3]
The company operated 16,200 units (12,300 tractors by company drivers and 3,900 owner-operator tractors), a fleet of 48,600 trailers, and 4,500 intermodal containers from 35 terminals in the United States and Mexico, generating just over $2.5 billion in revenue for the year ended December 31, 2009.[1]
Swift Transportation went public once again on December 16, 2010, trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).[12] The company offered 73,300,000 shares at USD$11.00 per-share, raising almost USD$766 million, with the proceeds being used for debt reduction. The offering represented 54.9% of the company, valuing the company at USD$1.86 billion. Due to the economic downturn, the IPO was below Moyes leveraged-buyout (LBO) price of USD$17.61. With the offering the name officially change from Swift Holdings Corp. to Swift Transportation Company.[1][13]
