Turkish , also referred to as Istanbul Turkish, is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages, with around 10–15 million native speakers in Southeastern Europe and 55–60 million native speakers in Western Asia. Speakers are located predominantly in Turkey, with smaller groups in Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Northern Cyprus, Greece, the Caucasus, and other parts of Europe and Central Asia.
The roots of the language can be traced to the Altay region in the Eurasian steppes, with the first known written records dating back nearly 1,300 years. To the west, the influence of Ottoman Turkish—the variety of the Turkish language that was used as the administrative and literary language of the Ottoman Empire—spread as the Ottoman Empire expanded. In 1928, as one of Atatürk's Reforms in the early years of the Republic of Turkey, the Ottoman script was replaced with a Latin alphabet.
The distinctive characteristics of Turkish are vowel harmony and extensive agglutination. The basic word order of Turkish is subject–object–verb. Turkish has no noun classes or grammatical gender. Turkish has a strong T–V distinction and usage of honorifics. Turkish uses second-person pronouns that distinguish varying levels of politeness, social distance, age, courtesy or familiarity toward the addressee. The plural second-person pronoun and verb forms are used referring to a single person out of respect.
Turkish is a member of the Oghuz group of languages, a subgroup of the Turkic language family. There is a high degree of mutual intelligibility between Turkish and the other Oghuz languages, including Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Qashqai, Gagauz, and Balkan Gagauz Turkish. The Turkic family comprises some 30 living languages spoken across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Siberia. Some linguists believe the Turkic languages to be a part of a larger Altaic language family. About 40% of all speakers of Turkic languages are native Turkish speakers. The characteristic features of Turkish, such as vowel harmony, agglutination, and lack of grammatical gender, are universal within the Turkic family.
History
The earliest known Turkic inscriptions are the three monumental Orkhon inscriptions found in modern Mongolia. Erected in honour of the prince Kul Tigin and his brother Emperor Bilge Khan, and dating back to some time between 732 and 735, as well as Bayn Tsokto inscriptions erected by Tonyukuk, the commander in chief between 720 and 725, they constitute important earliest records. After the discovery and excavation of these monuments and associated stone slabs by Russian archaeologists in the wider area surrounding the Orkhon Valley between 1889 and 1893, it became established that the language on the inscriptions was the Old Turkic language written using the Orkhon script, which has also been referred to as "Turkic runes" or "runiform" due to a superficial similarity to the Germanic runic alphabets.
With the Turkic expansion during Early Middle Ages (c. 6th–11th centuries), peoples speaking Turkic languages spread across Central Asia, covering a vast geographical region stretching from Siberia to Europe and the Mediterranean. The Seljuqs of the Oghuz Turks, in particular, brought their language, Oghuz Turkic—the direct ancestor of today's Turkish language—into Anatolia during the 11th century. Also during the 11th century, an early linguist of the Turkic languages, Mahmud al-Kashgari from the Kara-Khanid Khanate, published the first comprehensive Turkic language dictionary and map of the geographical distribution of Turkic speakers in the Compendium of the Turkic Dialects (Ottoman Turkish: Divânü Lügati't-Türk).
Ottoman Turkish
Following the adoption of Islam c. 950 by the Kara-Khanid Khanate and the Seljuq Turks, who are both regarded as the ethnic and cultural ancestors of the Ottomans, the administrative language of these states acquired a large collection of loanwords from Arabic and Persian. Turkish literature during the Ottoman period, particularly Ottoman Divan poetry, was heavily influenced by Persian, including the adoption of poetic meters and a great quantity of imported words. The literary and official language during the Ottoman Empire period (c. 1299–1922) is termed Ottoman Turkish, which was a mixture of Turkish, Persian, and Arabic that differed considerably and was largely unintelligible to the period's everyday Turkish known as kaba Türkçe or "rough Turkish", spoken by the less-educated lower and also rural members of society, which contained a higher percentage of native vocabulary and served as basis for the modern Turkish language.

The only extant member of the group is the Chuvash language. The Oghur branch arguably broke off from Common Turkic perhaps as early as 500 BCE.The Oghur group is characterized by the sound correspondences Oghuric l vs. Common Turkic (i.e. non-Oghur-Turkic) š and Oghuric r vs. Common Turkic z, for which reason it is also known as "Lir-Turkic", or "r-Turkic". The name Oghur itself is an example of the r/z isogloss, being cognate with Oghuz in Common Turkic. "dj-Turkic" is also used as a term for Oghur, in reference to a sound change from i- to dj-.Languages from this family were spoken in some of the nomadic tribal confederations, such as those of the Onogurs, Bulgars, and Khazars, and possibly by the Pannonian Avars.

Turkey, ‘the land beneath the half moon’. We begin our journey in Istanbul, golden gateway to the Orient, a city that was once the centre of the Old World and still reflects two and a half centuries of history. On the opposite side of the Galata Bridge on the banks of the Golden Horn is the Yeni Cami Mosque with a large number of domes and minarets built one on top of the other plus a number of precious glass windows. The Grand Basare is a city within a city. Through a large gate there is a labyrinth of corridors that were built over many centuries. The enclosed market contains more than four thousand shops within its seemingly endless halls and it is possible to buy almost anything here. A vivid world full of the aromas of the orient. Near to the west coast of Turkey situated between Troy and Ephesos is one of the most famous and well preserved ancient cities of this region, Pergamon. This, in the Hellenic era, was an ancient cosmopolitan city the traces of which are still visible today. Marmaris is situated on the Turkish Riviera and was once well protected by a mediaeval fortress. In 1522 Sultan Süleyman The Splendid enlarged the small castle of the former Roman rulers as he wished to conquer the island of Rhodes. Ankara is the capital of the Republic of Turkey and this once Anatolian provincial backwater is today one of the country’s most modern cities and is a vibrant world metropolis. The biggest mosque in Turkey is the Kocatepe Camii which is both a symbol of the devoutness of the Turkish people as well as being an important centre of communication for the entire city. Turkey is a country of many faces, with fairytale-like mosques and palaces, legendary ancient cities and fascinating landscapes. It is a link between Asia and Europe, between East and West and an historic bridge between both Orient and Occident.

Travel video about destination Istanbul in Turkey.
Istanbul is the golden gateway to the Orient, a city that was once the centre of the Old World and still reflects two and a half centuries of history. Today, this turbulent metropolis on the Bosporus is Europe's connection with Asia Minor.
Today, this link between Europe and Asia has more than 15 million inhabitants and is not only Turkey's largest city, but is also a melting pot of various cultures. Once a Greek colony, Roman Imperial City and capital of the Osman Empire, Istanbul is full of colorful and dramatic history.
The European-style city district on the northern side of the Golden Horn was founded as a trading colony by Genoese traders in 1261. In subsequent centuries, the Europeans dominated the appearance and character of this area whose buildings and main street indicate the city's splendid past.
The Basilica Yerebatan Cistern once provided Constantinople with its water supply. Emperor Justinian I had this subterranean reservoir built. It holds 80,000 cubic metres of water. A forest of more than 300 decorated stone columns support the ceiling and it once served as a backdrop for a James Bond film.
A mighty gate is the entrance to the splendid world of the Turkish sultans, Topkapi Palace, the former centre of power of the Osman Empire. It's like a small town with many exquisite buildings and wonderful parks.
Leonardo Da Vinci's vision of a bridge across the Bosporus was for many years only a dream, but 470 years later, the dream became reality. At a height of 64 metres, two city districts have been united in addition to two continents and the contrasting lifestyles of two completely different worlds.
Istanbul is a melting pot of culture and religion with a captivating allure and an irresistible atmosphere of mystique.

Holland Travel Video Guide
The European kingdom of Holland, known also as the Netherlands, was until relatively recently a powerful trading nation that possessed many colonies. Most of this land of tulips, windmills and canals is located below sea level and in the 17th century was the most prosperous country in Europe. Amsterdam is Holland`s splendid metropolis, a city of canals and gables where almost anything is permitted as long as it does no harm. Today the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and is the largest lakeland village in the world. In a huge open-air area between Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport, every ten years an international exhibition of garden architecture is held, the Floriade. It features hundreds of blossoming show gardens that are admired by millions of visitors from all over the world. In the 16th century life on the ocean wave brought glorious times for the city of Edam that is now world famous for its cheese of the same name. More than thirty shipyards once prospered in the city and the fleet of legendary Dutch hero, Michiel De Ruyter, was built there. Mijmegen lies proudly on the banks of the River Waal. The origins of Holland’s oldest city are to be found in the Roman settlement of Noviomagum. The triangular market square of this university and Hanseatic town is dominated by the Waag House, a red-bricked building of Renaissance design. The Molens Van Kinderdijk is a fascinating landscape of windmills and a Unesco World Heritage Sight. Its nineteen windmills are world famous and of course typical of Holland. The fascination of old cities, dreamy fairytale-like villages, paintings by some of the world’s greatest artists, bicycles and windmill: Holland is very much a land of the familiar and also the exotic.

Travel video about destination Ankara in Turkey.
Capital of the Republic of Turkey, Ankara is today one of the country’s most modern cities and a vibrant world metropolis that offers a diverse variety of leisure time activities as well as being steeped in both history and tradition. On a hill to the north is the largest and most splendid mosque in Turkey, Kocatepe Camii. Between 1967 and 1988 the imposing tower was constructed with the help of private donations. It is a replica of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, has four minarets, and accommodates around twenty thousand worshippers. Ankara’s old town is overlooked by a castle mound upon which the city’s citadel extends above the pinnacle. The city’s oldest settlement area is surrounded by one of the mighty castle walls and dates back to the time of the Hittites. The slope of the hill in front of the citadel is completely covered with Gecekondus, a mass of quickly-constructed buildings which at first only consisted of walls and a roof. They are unique buildings and many of those who reside in them originate from the region of the same name. There is a splendid zoo in the western outskirts of the city which, as with many of the city’s parks, originated in the early years of the Republic. Atatürk believed that parks and leisure areas in general were essential to the good health of the nation and hence of the new national capital. Ankara, Turkey’s capital city, is full of contradictions and yet it is the extraordinary charm of this remarkable metropolis that makes everything make sense

Take a tour of Cotton Castle in Turkey -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.
The carbonate mineral deposits have formed the pristine white Pamukkale in southern Turkey.
Pamukkale is Turkish for cotton castle, even though it is made up of travertine limestone run-off from the area's hot springs.
This slow moving rock formation creates dazzling stalactites and terraces
The natural hot springs have drawn tourists to this site for thousands of years.
This site is the former home of Hierapolis, a Roman Bath town.
The waters here are said to be good for the skin and eyes, and can be a remedy for asthma as well.
Shoes must be worn in the hot springs, to protect the deposits of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Side (pronounced sea-day) is built on a headland with several beaches to either side. It boasts bars, lokantas, watersports, modern shops, clubs and discos alongside the relics of the past - including two second-century temples and an amphitheatre. These ruins are close to the resort centre, with its bustling streets where there are bargains to be found. Turkey hotels located in Side are situated both in Side itself and along the coastline stretching from the town in each direction.

Istanbul is an old historic city dating back three hundred thousand years. The only city in the world spanning into two continents. This is a place that's filled with color and so many flavors.
The variety of foods and delicacies are among the main attractions.
A very crowded area with many tourists and peddlers skimming of the travelers with quick treats and countless souvenirs.
It's a place that safe to travel and walk about admiring the old historic sites as long as you respect their customs of dress and behavior. The public transportation services from the airport to the center is easy and comfortable.
I spent one day here and the video takes you along a walking tour of the center main spots to see.
Unfortunately they are not very friendly to tourists hours since I was not able to enter the Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace as my time ran out. Even though there was plenty of light the Bazaar closes at 7pm which was very disappointing.
Near the main sites local youths are very friendly to speak with tourists and offer information, in hopes of possibly being hired as a tour guide. The one thing I did not appreciate was being awakened by a screeching loudspeaker in the middle of the night by their prayer call. But that's the charm of Istanbul.
Surviving here on a $20/day meal budget is not difficult as long as you stay away from the centers busy tourist area's.
The people are very friendly and helpful, and English was not a problem here.

Invited speakers: Evren Dağlıoğlu (Urban) and Selçuk Özcan (Dragoman)
Invited LSPs: Urban Translation Services and Dragoman Ltd, both from Istanbul, Turkey
Urban Translation Services is a bridge across European, Turkic, Middle Eastern, and Asian languages. Connecting Asia and Europe with its Istanbul (2006) and Barcelona (2010) offices, Urban is on the way of becoming a global brand in translation industry with its planned San Francisco office.
Urban provides clear answers for questions such as “who are we?”, “how do we do our job?” and “what is our corporate policy?”: “transparency”, “professional team”, “technologyspeed”, “competitive price” and “continuous control for quality”. Business approach which determines the main characteristics of Urban is created in this context. Urban's core team, who have been brought up by Urban and of which Urban is proud of, and the esteemed professionals who have joined Urban act with this awareness.
Urban became the leading translation company of Turkey in such a quick time with its ever-developing technological infrastructure, and its three-phase production process, namely translation-editing-proofreading, which is subjected to ISO 9001 and EN 15038 standards.
Urban maintains its development by adding new language pairs on its portfolio. Urban-Istanbul and Urban-Barcelona offices incorporate translators and editors specialized in automotive, medical, consumer electronics, software, law and finance and project managers with a high level of experience at every stage of the workflow communicating in Turkish, English, Spanish, French, German, Catalan, Greek and Arabic.
Dragoman Ltd is an Istanbul based LSP and a technology evangelist. We specialize in web globalization, transcreation and multilingual conference interpreting.
We are committed to deliver highest quality translations using some of the most advanced technologies. We are partners with leading European translation technology providers including XTM, easyling and XTRF. MT is a growing revenue stream for us and we are happy to use MT as an integral component of our production. We are open to share our experiences with like-minded agencies and help build the future of translation industry together.
Selçuk Özcan serves as MT&QA; Lead at Dragoman Ltd. He is mainly responsible for optimizing and testing MT engines, defining quality requirements, creating quality assurance (QA) solutions, and training team members. He is involved with developing and implementing quality and post-edit strategies, which involves performing data (bilingual or monolingual) and workflow management, and integrating quality principles into MT+post-edit processes.

Hi. My name is Moses "Mouse" McCormick. I'm a polyglot living in the United States. I am also a foreign language teacher. I love meeting new people and learning about different cultures and languages.
This is my "Level Up" video. Using my very own FLR language learning method, I get out into the public and speak with everyday people. The catch--I'm speaking everything BUT English. While I'm out, I bump into native speakers of other languages such as: Mandarin, Spanish, Cantonese, German, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Twi, Somali, Arabic, Hindi and many many more.
Most people think that I have a special gift to learn languages. What I'd say that I have most is an open mind, motivation, and patience to learn a language. Using my FLR language learning method, you too can have conversations in different languages as well. If you'd like to really learn a new language, try my FLR language learning course out!
Thanks for watching! Be sure to SUBSCRIBE and join the conversation in the COMMENT below! If you'd like to hear more of a certain language make sure to let me know in the comments!

October 29, 2008 | The United States, France, Turkey, and India represent four secular democratic states with distinctively different patterns of religion/state separation and distinctively different modes of religious pluralism. This seminar examined comparatively the historical patterns of constitution of the four secular regimes, as well as the contemporary contentious debates on secularism, religion, and democratic politics in all four countries.
Charles Taylor is one of the world's leading scholars working at the intersection of religion, secularity, and modernity. Among his most important books are: The Sources of the Self (1992), Multiculturalism: Examining the Politics of Recognition (1994) and, most recently, A Secular Age (2007). Taylor was for many years Professor for Political Sciences and Philosophy at the McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he now serves as professor emeritus. He was awarded the Templeton Prize in 2007.
Rajeev Bhargava is professor of political theory and Indian political thought, head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Delhi and a prominent scholar of multiculturalism and secularism in non-Western societies. He is editor of Civil Society, Public Sphere and Citizenship: Dialogues and Perceptions (2005) and co-editor of Transforming India (2000). He has also edited Secularism and its critics (1998) and co-edited Multiculturalism, Liberalism and Democracy (1999).
Nilüfer Göle is professor of sociology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris and a leading authority on contemporary Islam as it relates to issues of identity and gender in Europe. She is the author of The Forbidden Modern: Civilization and Veiling (1997) and Interpénétrations: L'Islam et l'Europe. (2005). Her sociological approach also has produced a broader critique of Eurocentrism with regard to emerging Islamic identities at the close of the 20th century.
José Casanova is Professor in the Department of Sociology and Senior Fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, where he heads the program on Globalization, Religion and the Secular. A leading scholar of religion and globalization, he has published on topics including migration and religious pluralism, transnational religions, and sociological theory. His Public Religions in the Modern World (1994) has been translated into five languages.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Almut Kuppers talks about what learning a language means, how it is effected by culture or how it effects the culture. She gives examples from Germany and the schools there.
Almut Küppers is an educational scientist, language researcher and (English) language teaching specialist. Her home base is Frankfurt University but presently she lives and works in Istanbul where she was granted a Mercator-IPC fellowship at Istanbul Policy Center, Sabancı University. In her current ethnographic study she researches the social-cultural impact of a bilingual German-Turkish program at an elementary school in urban Hanover. Other research areas comprise multilingualism, intercultural learning, language and identity development as well as European language policy and educational drama.
Almut Küppers holds a PhD from Goethe University, Frankfurt, and a PGCE from Birmingham University, UK, and has worked at universities and schools in Germany, England, the United States, and Turkey. During 2005-2006, she was granted a Fulbright scholarship and worked as an exchange scholar at the College of New Jersey, USA. From 2010 to 2012 she was affiliated with Istanbul University, as a research fellow in the EU funded Comenius Project – MuViT (Multilingual Virtual Talking Books).
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
