Hagia Sophia (or Ayasofya in Turkish) is a grand example of surviving Byzantine architecture. Located in the Old City in Istanbul, Turkey, the current Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 and it has served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Imperial Mosque before being converted into a museum in 1935.
The interior is magnificient and breathtaking. Very astounding to see both Christian and Islamic elements in the same place. It is also amazing to see how well-preserved the architecture and mosaics are, after so many centuries.
Be sure to go there early to avoid the crowds!

Die 537 eingeweihte Basilika Hagia Sophia in Istanbul ist ein architektonisches Meisterwerk mit wechselvoller Geschichte. Eintausend Jahre lang war sie die größte Kirche der Welt und das religiöse und symbolische Zentrum des ersten großen christlichen Reiches: Byzanz. Bis zur Eroberung Konstantinopels war die Hagia Sophia das größte Gotteshaus der Christenheit. Nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels 1453 wandelten sie die Osmanen in eine Moschee um und fügten als äußeres Kennzeichen vier Minarette hinzu. Mit der Umwandlung der Moschee in ein Museum krönte Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 1934 schließlich seine laizistische Revolution. Als bei den damaligen Renovierungsarbeiten unter osmanischen Verzierungen sehr wertvolle Mosaike aus der byzantinischen Zeit freigelegt wurden, keimte das Interesse für die byzantinische Kunstgeschichte wieder auf.
Es kommt einem Wunder gleich, dass die gigantische, etwas mehr als 50 Meter hohe Kuppel der Hagia Sophia bis heute auf ihren Pfeilern thront und ihre Kunstschätze die Jahrhunderte überdauerten, denn Istanbul wurde auf einer sehr aktiven seismischen Verwerfung errichtet. Experten rechnen in den nächsten 20 Jahren mit einem großen Beben. Daher erforscht ein internationales Team bestehend aus Architekten, Seismologen und Ingenieuren die Erdbebensicherheit des Gebäudes. Sie hoffen, dabei auch versteckte Schwachstellen zu finden, um den Bau entsprechend zu stabilisieren und ihn für zukünftige Generationen zu erhalten.
Die Hagia Sophia zeugt von einer faszinierenden Geschichte. Und möglicherweise hat der byzantinische Monumentalbau noch längst nicht alle Kunstschätze freigegeben, die noch in ihm ruhen. Konservative Muslime fordern heute die Rückumwandlung der Hagia Sophia in ein islamisches Gotteshaus. Ob sie Museum bleibt oder Moschee wird, ist umstritten. Hello, this is a personal project I have done.
The Hagia Sophia is one of the world's greatest buildings. After visting Istanbul, I curiously thought to myself 'I wonder what the original church looked like'.
After a lot research, this is how the Hagia Sophia possibly may have looked before the fall of Constantinople. It has taken me an entire year to complete, working on it on-off. I am very pleased with the result.
I hope you enjoy this video.

- Hagia Sophia survived many earthquakes.
- The round tower located on the North East of the church is called the Skeuophylakion which was where all the Patriarchal treasure was kept.
- The small building on the South side of the building was the Baptistery.

Hagia Sophia (/hɑːɨə soʊfiːə/; from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Ayasofya) is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the Greek Patriarchal cathedral of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931, when it was secularized. It was opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.
The Church was dedicated to the Logos, the second person of the Holy Trinity, its dedication feast taking place on 25 December, the anniversary of the Birth of the incarnation of the Logos in Christ. Although it is sometimes referred to as Sancta Sophia (as though it were named after Saint Sophia), sophia is the phonetic spelling in Latin of the Greek word for wisdom – the full name in Greek being Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, "Church of the Holy Wisdom of God".

Hagia Sophia (or Ayasofya in Turkish) is a grand example of surviving Byzantine architecture. Located in the Old City in Istanbul, Turkey, the current Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 and it has served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Imperial Mosque before being converted into a museum in 1935. The interior is magnificient and breathtaking. Very astounding to see both Christian and Islamic elements in the same place. Hello, this is a personal project I have done. The Hagia Sophia is one of the world's greatest buildings. After visting Istanbul, I curiously thought to myself 'I wonder what the original church looked like'. After a lot research, this is how the Hagia Sophia possibly may have looked before the fall of Constantinople. It has taken me an entire year to complete, working on it on-off. I am very pleased with the result. I hope you enjoy this video. Facts: - Hagia Sophia survived many earthquakes. - The round tower located on the North East of the church is called the Skeuophylakion which was where all the Patriarchal treasure was kept. - The small building on the South side of the building was the Baptistery.

Die 537 eingeweihte Basilika Hagia Sophia in Istanbul ist ein architektonisches Meisterwerk mit wechselvoller Geschichte. Eintausend Jahre lang war sie die größte Kirche der Welt und das religiöse und symbolische Zentrum des ersten großen christlichen Reiches: Byzanz. Bis zur Eroberung Konstantinopels war die Hagia Sophia das größte Gotteshaus der Christenheit. Nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels 1453 wandelten sie die Osmanen in eine Moschee um und fügten als äußeres Kennzeichen vier Minarette hinzu. Mit der Umwandlung der Moschee in ein Museum krönte Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 1934 schließlich seine laizistische Revolution. Als bei den damaligen Renovierungsarbeiten unter osmanischen Verzierungen sehr wertvolle Mosaike aus der byzantinischen Zeit freigelegt wurden, keimte das Interesse für die byzantinische Kunstgeschichte wieder auf.
Es kommt einem Wunder gleich, dass die gigantische, etwas mehr als 50 Meter hohe Kuppel der Hagia Sophia bis heute auf ihren Pfeilern thront und ihre Kunstschätze die Jahrhunderte überdauerten, denn Istanbul wurde auf einer sehr aktiven seismischen Verwerfung errichtet. Experten rechnen in den nächsten 20 Jahren mit einem großen Beben. Daher erforscht ein internationales Team bestehend aus Architekten, Seismologen und Ingenieuren die Erdbebensicherheit des Gebäudes. Sie hoffen, dabei auch versteckte Schwachstellen zu finden, um den Bau entsprechend zu stabilisieren und ihn für zukünftige Generationen zu erhalten.
Die Hagia Sophia zeugt von einer faszinierenden Geschichte. Und möglicherweise hat der byzantinische Monumentalbau noch längst nicht alle Kunstschätze freigegeben, die noch in ihm ruhen. The US Geological Survey has produced an animation showing how the Earth’s temperature has risen from 1850 to the present day – and how it might continue towards a point described by one leading commentator as “the sixth circle of Hell” ...
