The Golden Age of Steam Trains Part: 05
This video clip deals more with the streamliners. In this video are the Hiawatha, a British A3 Pacific, some Coronation type streamliners, the J3a Streamlined Hudson, the George H. Emerson, and the S1. There is a short clip from an Alfred Hitchcock movie on the A3 Pacific. The end of this video starts to go into mountain railroading. There also some clips from the 1939 Worlds Fair.

PRR T1 Duplex #5505 at Horseshoe Curve (1949)
*Watch in HD and Pump Volume Up* Track Description... "Class T1 (4-4-4-4) #5505 westbound, climbing Horseshoe Curve just west of Altoona, PA with a Harrisburg-Pittsburgh Local Train #19. First heard 1/4 mile away, the T1's exhaust fades then strengthens as she passes the site of Kittanning Point Station and rounds the Curve, heading towards Gallitzin. Note the unusual sounds of the T1's poppet valves. This recording was made on July 5, 1949. From "Steam on the Standard Railroad of the World. MTH Premier PRR S1 (6-4-4-6) O-Gauge Steam Locomotive in True HD 1080p
In June of 2003, MTH brought out a Premier model of the Pennsylvania RR (PRR) S1, which was a one-of-a-kind 6-4-4-6 duplex steam locomotive. Unlike the big articulated locomotives, this one had a solid frame. The prototype locomotive spent the first two years of its life on rollers at the 1939 New York World's Fair, where it wowed visitors. In actual service however, it was too big for the tight curves of the east and spent it's short life running west of Crestline, Ohio, where it proved to lack sufficient traction to justify its existence, hence it was the only one of its kind. The model looks great (it reminds me of Flash Gordon's spaceship from the old serials), runs great, and sounds great. In this True HD 1080p video, you see it hauling a total of 18(!) heavyweight passenger cars, a very, very heavy train indeed. With just about any other locomotive, I'd double-head to pull this load; the S1 manages it all by itself. Please visit my web site -- www.toytrains1.com -- to see lots more videos and photos of real and model trains.

MTH Premier PRR T1 Duplex (4-4-4-4) O-Gauge Steam Locomotive in True HD 1080p
The Pennsylvania RR T1 Duplex (4-4-4-4) was conceived in the late 1930s as a replacement for the Pennsylvania Railroad's aging fleet of K4 Pacifics. Although it looked like an articulated locomotive (such as a Challenger or Big Boy), it was actually a duplex, two engines on a single rigid frame. The idea was to eliminate all the moving parts (including flexible steam pipes) required to swivel the front engine of an articulated, yet retain the additional power offered by two pairs of cylinders. Styled by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy, the T1 represented the Pennsy's best hopes for a technologically advanced steamer that could compete with diesels. Extensive testing of the first two T1s, delivered in 1942, indicated the new design was a winner - a single passenger engine capable of hauling a sixteen car train at a hundred miles an hour. Glowing reports from these tests convinced management to place an order for 50 additional engines. Pennsy's Altoona works and Baldwin Locomotive Works split the order, each producing 25 engines in 1945-46. In actual service, however, the locomotives did not live up to the promise of the test engines. Although they were indeed speedy and powerful, the rigid duplex frame gave the engine an unfortunate tendency to rock back and put most of its weight on the rear drivers, allowing the front engine to slip uncontrollably. It took a very skillful engineer to keep a T1 pulling surely on all eight drivers. Given more time, these problems ...

Broadway Limited PRR T1 4-4-4-4
This is my new (Christmas 2008) HO Broadway Limited Blueline PRR T1 4-4-4-4. I put a Digitrax DH123D decoder in it. This is my first Blueline from BLI. It runs fairly smooth compared to the regular BLI locos I own. It barely runs on my 22 outer radius curves. So I would not recommend it for people who have a layout with tight curves, but I can run it in one direction without major problems. Overall I would recommend the loco for anyone who is a Pennsy fan.

Trainz PRR T1 on the Krashnburne Railroad
Best viewed in High Definition and full screen. Trainz. A Pennsylvania Railroad T1 4-cylinder 4-4-4-4 duplex steam locomotive with baggage, sleeping and observation car making a high speed tour of inspection of the Krashnburne Railroad Company route. Yes, those switches at the final approach to the yard were designed with much smaller locomotives in mind. But, hey, it's a fun route.

PRR T1 BC&T; Excursion Deadhead
PRR T1 6110 (a replica that was recently built) deadheads to Chicago on the BC&T.; In the first few shots, it only has its cars for the excursion in a few days, and in later shots, a revenue freight was spliced in as it was also heading to Chicago. The freight train thats next to it is the Z-MIATAC-24 (that somehow has the same exact power from the 21st...) and it is the longest TOFC train on the system.

"T1" 4-4-4-4 Duplex Steam Locomotives - 1940's Pennsylvania Railroad Steam Trains
Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) "T1" steam locomotives filmed in late 1940's. Includes scenes of the wheel slip that plagued these locomotives. "The Pennsylvania Railroad's 52 T1 class duplex-drive 4-4-4-4 steam locomotives, introduced in 1942 (2 prototypes) and 1946 (50 production), were their last-built steam locomotives and their most controversial. They were ambitious, technologically sophisticated, powerful, fast, and uniquely streamlined by Raymond Loewy." - information supplied by wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org
