The band was formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio by college friends Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih.[4][2] Joseph came up with the bands name while studying All My Sons by Arthur Miller, a play about a man who commits suicide after causing the death of twenty one pilots during WWII because he knowingly sent them faulty parts as it was good for his business. Joseph claims this story of moral dialemma was the inspiration for the name of the band.[5] On December 29, 2009 they released their debut, self-titled album and began touring Ohio, building up a fan base. In 2011 Thomas and Salih left due to busy schedules and Joseph was joined by Josh Dun.[4]
Their second self-release, Regional at Best was released July 8, 2011. In Spring 2011 they played a free CD release show on the grounds of New Albany High School to which hundreds of people showed up. In November 2011 they played a sold out show at Columbus' Newport Music Hall attracting the attention of a dozen record labels. [6]
In February 2012, at a sold out show at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, they announced their signing to Atlantic Records subsidary label Fueled by Ramen.[4] On July 17, 2012 they released their debut Fueled by Ramen recording in the form of a three song EP, titled Three Song EP. In August 2012 they embarked on a short tour with Neon Trees and Walk the Moon.[6] They worked with Adele and Katy Perry producer Greg Wells on their first full-length album on Fueled by Ramen, Vessel.[7] It was released January 8 2013 and reached 58 on the Billboard 200, 42 on the Digital Albums chart, 17 on the Internet Albums chart, 15 on the Rock Albums Chart and 10 on the Alternative Albums Chart.[8]
The group currently has their first radio hit in America, "Holding On to You", which has reached 35 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart; additionally, the single "Guns for Hands" reached 21 on the Japan Hot 100.[8]

21 (twenty-one) is the natural number following 20 and preceding 22.
Twenty-one is the fifth discrete Semiprime and the second in the (3.q) family. With 22 it forms the second discrete Semiprime pair. As it is a semiprime with both its prime factors being Gaussian primes, 21 is then a Blum integer.
Twenty-one is a Fibonacci number, a Harshad number, a Motzkin number, a triangular number and an octagonal number, as well as a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 3 and 7.
21 is the sum of the first six natural numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6=21).
21 has an aliquot sum of 11 though it is the second composite number found in the 11-aliquot tree with the abundant square prime 18 being the first such member. Twenty-one is the first number to be the aliquot sum of three numbers 18, 51, 91.
21 appears in the Padovan sequence, preceded by the terms 9, 12, 16 (it is the sum of the first two of these).
The sum of divisors for the integers 1 through 6 is 21.
21 is a repdigit in base 4 (111).
21 is the smallest natural number that is not close to a power of 2, 2^n, where the range of closeness is +- n.
Am I the only one I know
Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat
Shadows will scream that I'm alone
I've got a migraine
and my pain will range from up down and sideways
thank God it's Friday
cause Fridays will always be better than Sundays
cause Sunday's are my suicide days
I don't know why they always seem so dismal
Thunderstorms, cloud, snow, and a slight drizzle
Whether it's the weather or the letters by my bed
sometimes death seems better than the migraine in my head
Let it be said what the headache represents
It's me defending in suspense
It's me suspended in a defenseless
test being tested by a ruthless examiner
that's respresented best by my depress...ing thoughts
I do not have writers block
my writer just hates the clock
it will not let me sleep, I'll get some sleep when I'm dead
and sometimes death seems better than the migraine in my head
Am I the only one I know
Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat
Shadows will scream that I'm alone
But I know we've made it this far, kid
yeah, yeah, yeah
I am not as fine as I seem pardon
Me for yelling I'm telling you green gardens
are not what's growing in my psyche
it's a different me
a difficult to be, stop feasting lumber down trees
freeze frame
please let me paint a mental picture portrait
something you won't forget, it's all about my forehead
deny what is important, holds back contents
that make pandora's box contents' look non-violent
Behind my eyelids are islands of violence
my mind shipwrecked, this is the only land my mind could find
I did not know it was such a violent island
Full of tidal waves, suicidal crazed lions
They're trying to eat me blood running down their chin
and they know that I can fight or I can let the lion win
I begin to assemble what weapons I can find
Cause sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind
Am I the only one I know
Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat
Shadows will scream that I'm alone
But I know we've made it this far, kid
yeah, yeah, yeah
And I will say that we should take a day to break away
from all the pain our brain has made
the game is not played alone
And I will say that we should take a moment and hold it
and keep it frozen and know that life has a hopeful undertone
And I will say that we should take a day to break away
from all the pain our brain has made
the game is not played alone
And I will say that we should take a moment and hold it
and keep it frozen and know that life has a hopeful undertone
Am I the only one I know
Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat
Shadows will scream that I'm alone
But I know we've made it this far, kid
