Hobart (/ˈhoʊbɑrt/) is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Founded in 1804 as a penal colony, Hobart is Australia's second oldest capital city after Sydney. In 2009, the city had a greater area population of approximately 212,019. A resident of Hobart is known as a "Hobartian". The city is located in the state's south-east on the estuary of the Derwent River. The skyline is dominated by Mount Wellington at 1,271 metres (4,170 ft) high. The city is the financial and administrative heart of Tasmania, also serving as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations.
Hobart was named Australia's 6th most sustainable city, by the Australian Conservation Foundation in 2010. For economic and social innovation, Hobart was the 11th placed in Australia in 2009, and listed as an innovation influencer city in the Innovation Cities Global Index scoring equal with Reykjavik, Katowice and Casablanca by 2thinknow.
The first settlement began in 1803 as a penal colony at Risdon Cove on the eastern shores of the Derwent River, amid British concerns over the presence of French explorers. In 1804 it was moved to a better location at the present site of Hobart at Sullivans Cove. The city, initially known as Hobart Town or Hobarton, was named after Lord Hobart, the Colonial Secretary. The area's indigenous inhabitants were members of the semi-nomadic Mouheneener tribe. Violent conflict with the European settlers, and the effects of diseases brought by them, completely destroyed the aboriginal population, which was rapidly replaced by free settlers and the convict population. Charles Darwin visited Hobart Town in February 1836 as part of the Beagle expedition. He writes of Hobart and the Derwent estuary in his Voyage of the Beagle:
Because of the differences in legislation between the States, the exact definition of a City Council varies. However, it is generally only those local government areas which have been specifically granted city status (usually on a basis of population) that are entitled to refer to themselves as cities. The official title is "Corporation of the City of ------" or similar.
Some of the larger urban areas of Australia are governed mostly by a single entity (see Brisbane and other Queensland cities), while others maybe controlled by a multitude of much smaller city councils. Also some significant urban areas can be under the jurisdiction of otherwise rural local governments. Periodic re-alignments of boundaries attempt to rationalize these situations and adjust the deployment of assets and resources.
Local councils in New Zealand do vary in structure, but are overseen by the government department Local Government New Zealand. For many decades until the local government reforms of 1989, a borough with more than 20,000 people could be proclaimed a city. The boundaries of councils tended to follow the edge of the built-up area, so little distinction was made between the urban area and the local government area.

Tim Hart from Urban Initiatives in Melbourne explores the different ways urban elements and landmarks can help establish a wayfinding system and connectivity without the need for explicit signage.
Nationally and internationally there is an increasing focus on active streets and community health matters within our urban areas. Walkability, connectivity, and by extension wayfinding, is an important aspect of the solution. Often it is the barriers to connectivity that will spoil any wayfinding system. Wayfinding, if it is to be successful, must be simple and logical. Wayfinding must be part of the urban infrastructure and planned in such a way that supports and promotes walking and cycling within our urban areas. It should be a public asset that provides long term benefit to both residents and visitors.
Designers have for many years used signage as the main active wayfinding tool, without recognising the importance or role that other urban elements can play in establishing connections between places or locations. Well designed spaces with logical connections, combined with natural and built landmarks minimise the need for introduced wayfinding systems. The talk will explore the notion of wayfinding and review examples of wayfinding systems and approaches, and will discuss how well conceived wayfinding elements can build on existing cues to positively influence the experience of a place.

When you first arrive in Hobart, you may not be aware that you’re exploring a former prison.
This onetime penal colony is located between Mount Wellington and Port Hobart, and features a number of exquisite colonial buildings in breathtaking natural surroundings. There’s a variety of things to do within the city, so chow down on seafood from a waterfront restaurant before stopping by one of the galleries built into old whale oil warehouses. Don’t forget to check out the Hobart Theatre, a must-see on any Hobart tour. This structure was built by convicts brought to Australia in the 19th century, and it still hosts live performances today.
Hobart sightseeing will no doubt include the Maritime Museum, which celebrates Hobart’s ties to the sea. Go for a sail on the Lady Nelson, a tall ship that makes regular excursions out to the harbor. You’ll work up an appetite trimming the sails and steering the ship, so why not venture to the Salamanca Market? For over 30 years, this market has featured fresh produce, local artwork, and clothing, and you’re bound to score a good bargain.
Next, go upriver to MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. This building descends three floors down into the cliffs surrounding it, and its often dark-natured artwork is featured in vast, cavernous spaces. All that art is bound to make you thirsty, so pay a visit to some of the wineries dotting Hobart’s surrounding landscape. Sip responsibly on a glass of wine, nibble a wedge of cheese, and enjoy the rolling green hills around you. Now this is living!
What will you do on your Hobart tour?

Tasmania, Australia Travel Guide - Must-See Attractions
Check Our Website : http://www.travels1001nights.com
Tasmania (abbreviated as Tas and known colloquially as "Tassie"; /tæzˈmeɪniə/[10]) is an island state, part of the Commonwealth of Australia, located 240 kilometres (150 mi) to the south of the Australian continent, separated by Bass Strait. The state includes the island of Tasmania, the 26th largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands.[11] The state has a population of 507,626 (as of June 2010), of whom almost half reside in the greater Hobart precinct. Tasmania's area is 68,401 square kilometres (26,410 sq mi), of which the main island covers 64,519 square kilometres (24,911 sq mi).[12]
Tasmania is promoted as the natural state, and A World Apart, Not A World Away owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. Almost 45% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites.[13] The island is 364 kilometres (226 mi) long from its northernmost to its southernmost points, and 306 kilometres (190 mi) from east to west.
The state capital and largest city is Hobart, which encompasses the local government areas of City of Hobart, City of Glenorchy, and City of Clarence, while the satellite town of Kingston (part of the Municipality of Kingborough) is generally included in the Greater Hobart area.
The northernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania is Boundary Islet, a nature reserve in Bass Strait which, due to a quirk of history, is shared with the state of Victoria.
The subantarctic Macquarie Island and its surrounding islands are also under the administration of Tasmania as a nature reserve and part of the Huon Valley Council local government area. The Bishop and Clerk Islets, about 37 km south of Macquarie Island, are the southernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania, and the southernmost internationally recognised land in Australia.

Complete Half Hour Program - Meet the locals as the Overlander travels around Tasmania
Travel Tasmania seeing it's top destinations through the eyes of the locals. Stories include:
Rob Pennicott and his artist wife Michaye live an idyllic family life on Bruny Island. Surrounded by nature and a bountiful sea, Bruny appears to be paradise, but as Rob suggests, may not be for everyone. I also discuss the sad history of Truganini, the last full blooded Tasmanian Aborigine.
In Hobart I interview Sudanese musician Ajak Kwai about her experience living in Tasmania.
Formation of the Australian Greens Political Party. I take a flight to the South West Wilderness area of Tasmania, learning about Critchley Parker Junior, an ill fated explorer who hoped to form a new Jewish State in the region. I also interview Senator Bob Brown, leader of the world's first Greens Political Party.
This action packed video is three stories packed into one. First I feature archival footage from the seminal Franklin River campaign, then I investigate the Facial Tumor Disease effecting the wild Tasmanian Devil Population, and finally I do a story on Port Arthur, an historic convict colony where I interview guide Laura Leeworthy, do their ghost tour and film a Ghost!!
Fishing for Trout in Tasmania offers anglers some of the most remote Lake Fishing in the world. I interview Janice Spencer about the Land of 3,000 Lakes. Janice was the first female angler ever accepted for an Australian competition Fly Fishing Team.
Tasmania has some of the biggest cold water surf breaks in the world. I visit Marrawah on the north west corner, a location renowned for it's year round surf. I interview 16 yr old local Zak Grey.
Cruising the winding roads of Tasmania on a Harley Davidson with Simon Richardson. Simon owns the Launceston Harley Davidson Dealership and believes Tasmania offers bikers great touring opportunities, with mountainous roads and free camping. I also visit Stanley, Tasmania's Best Town. Simon rides a 1980 Shovelhead Harley Trike.
For my last Tasmania story I visited Campbelltown's sombre convict brick display and then interviewed an Irish Woman in the Town of National Park, near the Mt Field National Park. Trish Rawlins believes Tasmania is like Ireland before it lost all it's trees.

Discourses on ‘diversity’ have run through Australian political life since the Keating Government’s reforms in the 1990s, but take different forms in different contexts. In this talk Lisa Singh will examine diversity in Australia using different theoretical perspectives and the ways in which multiculturalism is understood when viewed through these different sets of theories and values. Reflecting on her experience as an Australian with Indian heritage, and from her experience in visiting India, Lisa will also consider the complexity and diversity of Indian society and political life, and reflect back on how

Reflecting on her experience as an Australian with Indian heritage, and from her experience in visiting India, Lisa will also consider the complexity and diversity of Indian society and political life, and reflect back on how Australian multiculturalism compares and contrasts with its Indian counterparts.
About the Speaker
Lisa Singh was elected as a Tasmanian Labor Senator in August 2010 and began her term on 1 July 2011, following in the political footsteps of her grandfather Ram Jati Singh, who was a member of the Fijian Parliament in the 1960s. She is considered the first woman of South Asian descent to be elected to the Australian Parliament. In October 2013, Bill Shorten, the Leader of the Opposition, appointed Lisa as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Shadow Attorney-General. She was promoted to Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment, Climate Change and Water on 24 June 2014.
Lisa is a passionate supporter of the Australia-India relationship and is developing and strengthening ties between both countries through her role as an Australian Senator. In the previous Labor Government, Lisa took on the role of caucus liaison to facilitate Federal parliamentary Labor party engagement on the Australia in the Asian Century White Paper. She has participated in the Lowy Institute’s Australia-India Roundtable in New Delhi and has also visited India to meet representatives on various issues including asbestos and workplace health and safety. In July 2010 Lisa visited Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh, to meet representatives of the exiled Tibetan Government and human rights sector. In 2014, her exceptional and meritorious public service as a person of Indian heritage in fostering friendly relations between India and Australia was recognised with a Pravasi BharatiyaSamman award from the President of India.
In 2008, while serving as a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly, the Tasmanian Premier appointed her Minister for Corrections and Consumer Protection and Minister for Workplace Relations, as well as Minister assisting the Premier on Climate Change; portfolios in which she achieved significant and lasting reforms.
Before and after her term in the Tasmanian Parliament as a Labor Member for Denison between 2006 and 2010, Lisa served the community through her work in the union movement, the non-government sector and the public service. She was Hobart City Council’s ‘Hobart Citizen of the Year’ in 2004 and in 2010 founded the Asbestos Free Tasmania Foundation, a support organisation for asbestos disease sufferers in Tasmania. She graduated from the University of Tasmania with Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and also holds aMasters of International Relations from Macquarie University.

Local City Council Leaders Gather to Support Jeff Stone for State Senate
Outside Special Interest Money in Senate Race Concerns Local Officials
(Rancho Mirage, CA) – In an unprecedented showing of support for a State Senate candidate, City Councilmembers from across the 28th Senate District gathered at the Rancho Mirage City Hall today to show their support for Jeff Stone and to criticize the amount of outside special interest money being spent to defeat him.
City Councilmembers and Mayors from most of the cities in the district were on hand to show unified support across Riverside County. Elected officials from the Southwest Riverside County cities of Murrieta and Temecula traveled to Rancho Mirage to join their counterparts from Cathedral City, Indian Wells, Indio, and La Quinta to show a broad-based coalition of support for Jeff Stone.
“Jeff Stone is someone who has proven his ability to make a difference for our local communities, and he is the type of leader we need representing us in Sacramento. He has been an outstanding County Supervisor, and he’ll be able to make a real difference in Sacramento for the entire 28th Senate District,” said Rancho Mirage Councilman Dana Hobart.
Indio Mayor Mike Wilson added, “Jeff Stone is the one we trust to fight for Riverside County in the State Senate. As a former Fire Chief, I know we can trust Jeff Stone to work to put public safety first, and he won’t be beholden to the special interests that are spending millions to defeat him.”
At the press conference, material was distributed showing the vast sums of money being spent by special interests on behalf of Supervisor Stone’s opponent. To date, over $2.1 million has been spent by outside special interests to influence the 28th Senate District which is wholly contained in Riverside County.
“With millions of special interest dollars going to support Bonnie Garcia, we have to wonder why. While she was in the Assembly, Ms. Garcia was a key vote to give one of the largest government employee unions a 16% pay raise that cost taxpayers over $1.5 billion, so I guess it’s not surprising the big special interests are engaged in character assassination and negative campaigning to do everything they can to defeat our local choice for Senate – Jeff Stone,” concluded Indio Councilman and former candidate for the 28th Senate District Glenn Miller.
The run-off election for the 28th Senate District will be held in conjunction with the California Statewide General election on November 4th. Jeff Stone was the top vote-getter during the June Primary election.

City Talks: Wayfinding - Tim Hart
City Talks: Wayfinding - Tim Hart
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA Tasmania) and partners Hobart City Council held the second event in the City Talks: Urban Landscapes Seminar Series entitled 'Lost? Why Great Cities Point People in the Right Direction'.

Tiffin Talk - Contemporary Multiculturalism: from Australia to India and Back
9 October 2014 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Discourses on ‘diversity’ have run through Australian political life since the Keating Government’s reforms in the 1990s, but take different forms in different contexts. In this talk Lisa Singh will examine diversity in Australia using different theoretical perspectives and the ways in which multiculturalism is understood when viewed through these different sets of theories and values.
