Dermocystidiosis
Dermocystidium sp. is a parasite that belongs to the class Mesomycetozoea which are organisms at the boundary of the animal and fungal divergence.
These parasites are known to cause skin infections and can be found on the fins, gills or body in various fish species.
The infected fish show with opaque tubular cyst on the skin surface. Cyst grow in size until ultimately they rupture releasing infectious spores into the water. The water contaminated with flagellated zoospores can transmit dermocystidiosis from one aquarium to the other.
Although the emerging cyst breaks the skin, it can heal with no trace of a scar but secondary infections are common in any disease that opens the skin to invasion by bacteria, fungi, viruses and other pathogens.
There is no known treatment for this disease...
