Box jellyfish (class Cubozoa) are cnidarian invertebrates distinguished by their cube-shaped medusae. Some species of box jellyfish produce extremely potent venom: Chironex fleckeri, Carukia barnesi and Malo kingi. Stings from these and a few other species in the class are extremely painful and can be fatal to humans.
"Box jellyfish" and "sea wasp" are common names for the highly venomous Chironex fleckeri. However, these terms are ambiguous, as "sea wasp" and "marine stinger" are sometimes used to refer to other jellyfish.
The medusa form of a box jellyfish has a squarish, box-like bell. From each of the four lower corners of this hangs a short pedalium or stalk which bears one or more long, slender, hollow tentacles. The rim of the bell is folded inwards to form a shelf known as a velarium which restricts the bell's aperture and creates a powerful jet when the bell pulsates. As a result, box jellyfish can move more rapidly than other jellyfish; in fact, speeds of up to six meters per minute have been recorded.

To learn more, visit our website: http://www.ourbeautifulplanet.org/nature/box-jellyfish-deadly/ There are many creatures on earth that are considered deadly to humans, from snakes, to lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Arguably the most deadly is other humans. Coming in a close second are microbes, creatures we can’t even see but cause most deadly diseases. We know all this, but what many people don’t know, is that the worlds most venomous marine animal thrives in habitats occupied by humans, is incredibly hard to spot, and has enough venom to kill multiple adults. Nearly 100 people die each year from injuries caused by the box jellyfish. When determining how deadly a venomous a creature is, you generally want to take two metrics into consideration: 1. How many people an ounce of venom c...

COCOA BEACH, Florida - The highly venomous and potentially deadly box jellyfish have returned to the nearshore waters of Cocoa Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Although the Atlantic Ocean species of box jellyfish, Chiropsalmus quadrumanus, does not pack the extreme potency of the infamous Australian box jellyfish dubbed the sea wasp, the species that washes up on Florida's beaches can still be life-threatening and has a painful sting. Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officials have previously collected this jellyfish species offshore of Florida's Space Coast. So it is not completely out of the ordinary for the box jellyfish to appear on Brevard County beaches. In fact, Brevard Times reported a previous sighting back in July. What makes this jellyfish more dangerous to ...

This documentary studies poisonous Jellyfish. Jellyfish sting their prey using nematocysts, also called cnidocysts, stinging structures located in specialized cells called cnidocytes, which are characteristic of all Cnidaria. This is the full documentary. Contact with a jellyfish tentacle can trigger millions of nematocysts to pierce the skin and inject venom, yet only some species' venom cause an adverse reaction in humans. When a nematocyst is triggered by contact by predator or prey, pressure builds up rapidly inside it up to 2,000 pounds per square inch (14,000 kPa) until it bursts. A lance inside the nematocyst pierces the victim's skin, and poison flows through into the victim. Touching or being touched by a jellyfish can be very uncomfortable, sometimes requiring medical assistance...
And that all knowing stare was hard enough to wear
It's the reciprocated gloat that sticks in your throat
The box jellyfish sting it stops your heart before you know
But you stopped me deader than anything
And you *stuck* me deader than anything
You put into words like I never could
You sing them through like I would just kill to
Hit that nail on the head in three words everything is said
And you can strip a butt-end and put it back together again
In a perfect English accent with just one hand better than anything
Now I boxed you in and then I boxed you in how I boxed you in
And boxed you in boxed you in and boxed you in then I boxed you in
You were so wrapped up living in my loft
But you only got in because I had a tile off and
Busy patting your own back walking forward looking back
It's so beautiful to watch she wears a Rolex but looks good in a Swatch
And she stopped me deader than anything she stopped me deader than anything
Boxed you in then boxed you in and now that I boxed you in
And boxed you in boxed you in then I boxed you in and I boxed you in
You put into words like I never could
And you sing them through like I would just kill to
Hit that nail on the head in three words everything is said
And you can strip a butt-end and put it back together again
And that all knowing stare was so hard enough to bear
With it's reciprocated gloat that sticks in your throat
The box jellyfish sting it stops your heart before you think
