US presidential candidate Donald Trump delivers official news conference at Turnberry Golf Course.
Donald Trump has said it is a "great thing" that the people of the UK have "taken back their country" in voting to leave the EU.
On the day that
Britain voted on a historic referendum to leave the
European Union, Donald Trump appeared — flanked by his entire family — at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Turnberry Golf Course in Scotland, one of his many business ventures around the world. And with the eyes of the
American media firmly on his reaction to the EU vote as well as, presumably, that whole
Presidential race thing he’s involved with, Donald Trump firmly and unapologetically discussed… his golf courses. In a sprawling speech that didn’t resemble anything that people were expecting, the real estate mogul focused on business as usual, scantily making any reference to the election. He barely mentioned the EU vote at all, before describing just how beautiful Turnberry had become after renovations and boasting about the size and scale of the golf course’s suites. “We’ve taken the lighthouse, which is a very, very important building in
Florida — I mean in Scotland — and we’ve taken that building and made it something really special,” he said about the #Turnberry lighthouse that dons the ninth
hole of the golf course. “It has incredible suites… golfers will stop and they’ll have something to eat,” he continued. Both #
CNN and #
MSNBC cut away from the feed so their on-air analysts could hammer the speech. CNN’s
David Gregory immediately slammed the speech as, “political malpractice.”
Katty Kay of
BBC News said on
Morning Joe that is was, “Stunning that he would come out with a sales pitch.”
Eventually,
Fox News caught on as well, cutting off the feed though falling well short of blasting the
Republican presumptive nominee.
Steve Doocy of
Fox & Friends simply called him, “A very proud Donald Trump,” before finding some way to draw
Trump’s comments as contrary to the policies of
President Barack Obama and
Hillary Clinton. Trump concluded his remarks by bringing up his children, who all also spoke about the golf course. “I hope we make Turnberry great again,” joked
Donald Trump Jr.Donald Trump, in Scotland to reopen a golf course, on Friday morning cheered Britain for voting to leave the European Union. “They took back control of their country.
It's a great thing,” Trump "
People are angry, all over the world, they're angry," he added. "They're angry over borders, they're angry over people coming into the country and taking over.
Nobody even knows who they are. They're angry about many, many things." The presumptive
GOP presidential nominee said he expects other places to similarly reject the status quo, saying that “this will not be the last.” Trump expressed similar sentiments in a series of social media posts Friday morning: Self-determination is the sacred right of all free people's, and the people of the UK have exercised that right for all
