Tigers survive scare to defeat Blues

Richmond survive a huge scare from upstart Carlton to win season-opener by nine points in front of 75,706 fans at the MCG.

March is too early to win a premiership, but it's time enough to lose one. For Richmond, this truism was fast materialising on Thursday night. The Tigers, rightly a top-four aspirant in 2016, stared down an MCG nightmare, with only a final-term flurry seeing Damien Hardwick's men home against last year's wooden-spooners Carlton.

Ten points behind early in the final quarter, Richmond were spared blushes by unheralded goalsneak Sam Lloyd. His two final quarter snaps — bookended by goals to Jack Riewoldt and Anthony Miles — prevented a monumental upset in front of 75,706, as the Tigers clawed home by nine points.

There had been great optimism emanating from Carlton during the off-season, but few Blues fans could have predicted the rewards would come so quickly. After a hellish 2015, Carlton had wanted to turn a new page, and none of their five newcomers let the club down on their first start. Sam Kerridge had shown plenty in the pre-season, but while he was again impressive, it was his ex-Adelaide teammate Matthew Wright, whose three third-quarter majors almost put the game beyond Richmond's reach, who was even better.

If there was a moment that summed up the mood for most of the night, it was late in the third quarter, as Carlton's No. 1 draft pick Jacob Weitering outmarked Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin. The symbolism was clear: the new Blues were proving too much for the old Tigers.

The previous fortnight had been a bad one for Richmond. The Tigers had lost Brett Deledio, Reece Conca, Ivan Maric, Shaun Grigg and Chris Yarran. It showed, with few in the yellow and black able to make an imprint for large portions of the night.

Carlton's midfield justified its reputation as the Blues' strongest division. In a head-to-head battle of the skippers, Marc Murphy trounced Cotchin. Patrick Cripps again showed why he is among the game's brightest stars, while Bryce Gibbs was at his vibrant best.

There was no shortage of early intensity from Brendon Bolton's team. Their  tackling was noticeably zealous. But their major failing in the first term was being over the top. Gibbs charged unnecessarily at Kane Lambert, gifting the Tigers the season's first goal. It was one of three 50m penalties given away by the Blues, who, with a bit more finesse and accuracy, would have led by more than three points at the first change.

Richmond surged in the second term, as Ty Vickery momentarily took control inside 50, slotting two of his three goals for the evening, and overturning an 11-point second term deficit. Still the Blues came after half-time, sparking nervous moments for the Tigers' faithful. Had it not been for the likes of Lambert and Dustin Martin, there might have been a few more membership cards strewn around Melbourne's streets on Friday morning.

  • Youd think reading this that Carlton won.

    • One side played daring attacking football that will probably take them a lot further than the pedestrian game plan that at best will get you to the finals and then that's it - season over.

If Rance hadn't been playing Carlton would have won by 5 goals, he was the only Richmond player to contribute effectively over the whole game against a side still wearing "L" plates.

    • Agreed.

No surprise though, as one thing that will not change is the AFL media's over the top flip flopping. Each defeat will be the harbinger of terminal decline and each victory will be the dawn of a new era.

It helps if you don't expect reasoned, intelligent comment. For example, the fact that this is only round one, and the Blues were always bound to be well up for it with all their new players, new coach and new playing style. The fact that Richmond's class saw them through to victory.

Or the fact that in a few weeks time, the round one results will be viewed quite differently by all concerned.

  • Dear AFL, us fans are mightily peeved at the outrageous 50m penalties for relatively minor indiscretions. Can we have some common sense thrown in, please. If its minor and has no effect on play, could the umpires just let go of the bone? A free kick is bad enough, a 50m meter penalty is cruelty.
Well done blue boys. It looks like it was only fatigue and silly mistakes that cost the game. As for Richmond, I dont know what the rap is, but didnt look that impressive. But then again, its only round 1

    • Strongly suggest that the Blues learn not to tackle players around the neck off the ball. That way they might not give away 50m penalties.

    • Not saying "things" didn't happen, but wait till your team gets the raw deal, because it will. Just saying that its the one thing that really really irritates when your on the receiving end. It goes against "the fair go". Its a double penalty for relatively minor indiscretions.
My side gets them, other sides get them.

    • A team that was rated by some as a top 4 prospect, whereas the other team rated as bottom two. Guess who was outplayed for most of the night? Tigers. Tigers were lucky to get the 4 points, and unfortunately for tiger supporters luck only takes you so far.

    • TigerBren. Being a bit precious. I think the point is Carlton did better than expected given they finished last in 2015. In fairness to the Tigers they had a few key players out. However even with that Carltons new players showed a bit, the game plan looks better. I'll wait and see how your Tigers perform with their best 22 before forming a view on this season. I'm tipping had they been playing say tge Hawks some of those "injured" players may have played. Expect to see a stronger Tigers team next week. Good luck for your Tigers. As for me, Carlton showed us supporters a glimpse to the future.
