Copied from http://www.ocvarsity.com/sports/first-17675-prep-riverside.html#slComments Fairmont Prep falls short By DAVID CARRILLO 2009-10-30 23:46:00 RIVERSIDE -Fairmont Prep nearly overcame an early 16-point deficit but ultimately fell short, losing at California School for the Deaf in Riverside, 28-26, in a San Joaquin league contest Friday night. CSDR (4-4, 3-2) opened the game with a dominating show on offense. It scored on their first three possessions of the first half on a combined seven plays. The first was an 81-yard run by junior Ryan Baldiviez — who would later score on a 63 yard run — and was followed by a 45-yard run by Juan Salazar. After falling behind 28-12 early in the third quarter, Fairmont Prep (3-5, 1-3) rallied on both sides of the ball. They marched the ball down field 75 yards for a score, bringing them within 10, and matched that performance on defense with a critical goal-line stand. The Huskies took the momentum of their goal-line stand and, led by quarterback Kevin Wagner, proceeded to drive the ball for 80 yards and a score. The% 3-yard touchdown run by Minh Dang brought Fairmont Prep within two points with 2:06 left on the clock. Fairmont Prep failed to recover its onside kick attempt and their defense was unable to force a three-and-out on CSDR’s offense. NBLC Nothing But League Champs! That is what the Skyview football program lives by, and Friday night, for a third year in a row, that is just what they accomplished, the 4A Greater St. Helens League Championship. To do so, the Storm had to go into McKenzie Stadium and take on the 2x defending 3A GSHL Champions, the #8 ranked Union Titans. Skyview struck early and often to jump out to a 17-0 lead after 1 quarter of play. Storm DL William Lopez picked off a Kaben Humphry-Butler screen pass and ran it in 19 yards for the score on the 3rd play of the game. On the Titans next drive, Skyview DL Albert Chon recovered a fumble at the Titans 14, setting up Nick Phillips 1st of 3 field goals on the night, form 22 yards out. Union again fumbled the ball on their next possession, which Alex Mangin recovered at the Storm 48. Just 3 plays later Skyview QB Kieran McDonagh threw the ball out to WR Ellis Henderson who scooted down the sideline for a 33 yard touchdown and the early 17-0 lead with 2:50 to go in the 1st quarter. Early in the 2nd quarter, Union started to claw their way back into the game. Humphrey-Butler capped off a 6 play 70 yard drive with a 5 yard touchdown run. Union DB Zach Nelson picked off McDonagh on Skyview's next play setting up the Titans at the Storm 31. 4 plays later, on 4th and 9, Humphry-Butler found Tanner Nelson in the end zone for a 30 yard touchdown pass, cutting the Skyview lead to 4, at 17-13. Over the next 4 minutes only 8 plays were ran, but each team scored another touchdown. Skyview went 71 yards in just 5 plays following the Titnas score, and McDonagh hit Mo Morrison on a 17 yard touchdown pass to push the lead back up to 24-13. Union only needed 3 plays to answer. Humphry-Butler went deep to Ray Burney on the first play, a 41 yard hookup. 2 plays later Zak Browning powered his way into the end zone from 13 yards out, and just like that it was 24-20. Skyview struck first again in the 2nd half. On the Storm's second possession they drove 43 yards in 11 plays down to the 8 before backing up and kicking another field goal. Phillips second on the night, form 37 yards out put Skyview up 27-20. Union only needed 3 plays to go 80 yards and tie the game up at 27-27 when Brandon Bordy-Heim broke loose on a 35 yard touchdown run. Then the fog really settled in and made things very difficult to see. Skyview answered again, the theme of the night, with another Nick Phillips field gaol, this one from 31 yards put the Storm up 30-27 with 9:39 remaining in the game. The Titans then drove 38 yards in 8 plays, including a fake punt that picked up 22 yards, down to the Storm 38 taking 5:03 off the clock but stalled and turned the ball over on downs. Skyview now up 3 with 4:39 to go in the game was looking to run off some clock with Parker Henry runs. Henry moved the Storm down to the Titans 43 in just a few plays. Then McDonagh hit Reiley Henderson on a screen pass to the left and looked as though he was bout to go out of bounds. However, Henderson just hit the sidelines and was gone, sprinting the rest of the way untouched for the 43 yard touchdown to put Skyview up 37-27 with just 2:14 to go in the game. The excitement was not done however. Union drove 78 yards in just 6 plays to cut the lead to 37-34. On first and goal from the 5, Humphry-Butler appeared to be sacked, but managed to keep his balance and got the pass off to Zak Browning, who did the rest and scored from 5 yards out with 1:15 in the game. While my mind flashed back to the old Doc Harris Stadium last season when Jed Barnett's onside kick was recovered by T.J. Boatright to set up the Titans game winning drive against Camas, this year's onside kick was uneventful and went about 15 yards right to a waiting Storm player who fell on the ball at their 46, sealing the victory. NBLC! Overall this was the most exciting GHSL game since last years Union/Camas game and had the same feel as the 2007 Evergreen at Mountain View game when the Plainsmen won 28-27. With the win Skyview improves to 7-2 on the season and 4-0 in league play. The Storm will host Todd Beamer (4-5) for the preliminary round of the playoffs at Kiggins Bowl next weekend, date and time TBD. Union falls to 7-2 on the season with the loss and 3-1 in league play. The Titnas will travel to #4 Bothell (7-2) Friday for the preliminary round of the playoffs at Pop Keeney Stadium time TBD.
